More on Callum's magical path will be addressed in the next chapter. I will say, Callum has gaping holes in his studies as a result of being essentially self-taught. Aaravos, who has been an archmage for a millennia, vastly outstrips him in pretty much every way possible when it comes to magic. Barring some incredibly clever plan or Disney-approved deus ex machina, Callum cannot realistically beat Aaravos in a one-on-one. (They are apparently introducing another Startouch elf next season, and I suspect the show's plan for Aaravos' downfall starts there.)
Callum may be a prodigy, but Aaravos himself was also a prodigy. Tack on lifetimes of experience and study that Callum could never hope to replicate, and it's rendered moot. Aaravos doesn't fear Callum, merely sees his potential and wishes to harness it to finish the task he set out to do. If Aaravos does fear something, it's certainly being tossed back into the mirror.

Into the pearl, you mean. And why would he fear something far greater than our dove of the Heavens? Make it sound like here, there is an ancient, deeper magical power beyond both Callum and Aaarvos combined.
