    Ron was furious at Greyback, probably angrier than he had ever been at anyone. So he tried to use the illegal curse, morals be damned. But his anger was born more out of love for Hermione than out of hatred for Greyback. Killing Curse is dark magic, it requires an intent of malice to perform it (as Hermione and Ron were discussing earlier in the story). Hence, the killing curse could never be powered by Ron's pure feeling of protectiveness towards Hermione.
