Comment on There Were Still Dreams

  1. I just read There Were Still Dreams and just had to pop over to say I so thoroughly love it! I'll leave a comment later when I'm on my pc because my phone is munching them. Thank you thank you thank you!

Aww, I'm glad you liked it! I wrote a short piece about Turgon years ago, shortly after her death, and it got me thinking about them as a family. Never found sufficient time/incentive to write their story till I saw your art. I do love her, she was strong and brave and he relied on her a lot... I need to stop, I can get carried away on this, lol! Anyhow, glad you enjoyed.

      1. I'm so glad you did! I haven't thought much about her much more than as a deceased wife/ mother, and I'm so glad your portrayal is my first as it'll influence my image of her, and I like this image! And I would love to hear more... perhaps if I work on an artwork of her... 😉

I was going to link you to A Broader Land, my short Turgon piece, but I realised it is deathly depressing and really, do any of us need more of that kak? However, because I like her so much, here are the two passages where I saw her clearest:

*He had been so proud of her, his Vanyarin wife who had needed no urging to join her fate with his in this crossing. Elenwë it was who had strengthened his resolve, lying in their bed when the world was quiet and dark, talking about the rights and wrongs of it, to go or to stay. She alone of the women of the House of Finwë had stood firm and proud at her man’s side, ready to leave with him and seek broader lands and high adventure across the short expanse of the Sea.....

He had loved Elenwë from the day he met her, had fought long and hard to win her for his wife and gain acceptance from her haughty family to whom even royal blood barely excused his Noldor lineage. He had not fought alone, for she had been his strength, the certain voice that found the core of the argument while he tried to see all sides, anxious to have everything done as it should be.*

She doesn't appeal to writers because Turgon, but it's a shame because she seems such a strong, positive character (who I clearly don't get much chance to talk about, so you opened the floodgates here, lol). I'm glad you liked her, thanks a lot.

And happy Christmas - how did we get to the end of the year so fast?

          1. Oh! What a lovely Chrissie Prezzie! Thank you so much for your thoughtfulness. (Both saving me the depressing bits and sending me the beautiful bits!) I'm really liking her more and more now.

You know, I was surprised to discover Turgon has such a dodgy reputation in this fandom, because in canon I saw him as doing what everyone else did in their own unique ways: doing some marvelous stuff and making some disastrous choices.

And now I think: what if Elenwë had been with him? Hmmm... a whole different Gondolin perhaps? But from this, even without context, I can just see-feel him, lying alone in bed nights imagining her there with him, having imagined conversations, trying to advise himself the way he thinks she would have, and missing her deeply, then going about his days kinging, doing his best to live as if he's still whole...

So please, any time you'd like to bounce some Elenwë my way, she'll be received with enthusiasticly open arms! In any case, I'll look up A Broader Land when I'm in needing a good sob.

I actually still have a whole (big) bunch of your fics that I've been longing to read, but along with so many other things they've been pushed further down the to-do list. The exhanges are such fun and so motivating and enthusing and energising in their way, but they've also taken more energy than I realised while l was having so much fun, so I'm going to take a break from creating and just read for a while...

And may your Christmas be blessed with plenty of feel-good breath-space! 💝 🌬️
(Although we're at the end of the year, it definitely hasn't been a whole year. Time is even more weirdly elastic than usual!)
