    OKAY FIRST OF ALL FUCKING WOW
    Aaaaaaaa? AAAAAAAAA?!? AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA- okay I promise I have a serious review but I needed to get that out of my system first
    That was AMAZING. Your writing style, the complete grasp on voices and personalities, all the tiny details, I owe you my blood
    Where do I even start?!?!? Um. The way you use different styles of narration to indicate a character’s mental state is beautiful. The repetition, difficulty focusing, thought spirals, attempted coping mechanisms… GAH. You’re so good at putting the reader in a character’s mind that it’s genuinely fucking scary
    There are SO MANY LAYERS to the puppet thing I’m in love with it. Besides the obvious metaphor for being controlled there’s also “of course Kaito watched Sesame Street as a kid” and the running trend of “Kaito makes jokes to himself to cope” and the fact that I can fucking hear the world’s most viscerally uncomfortable “Yaaaay!” in his Muppet Voice is KILLING ME
    It goes without saying that the plans are all FUCKING AMAZING. It’s always fascinating to get to see into your Kokichi’s thoughts as he tries to balance “I want to end the game” with “I would Rather Die than drop my persona”. Plus it’s a little morbidly funny how wrong he keeps being about everything without ONCE considering changing his modus operandi. Way to go, Kokichi. You fuckin show ‘em.
    It is really interesting to note the thing about Kaito being the last person Kokichi wanted to work with. Was it because he was too idealistic to agree with a murder plan? Unreliable? Just straight up dying too fast? …Maybe because Kaito kept trying to punch him. I would not put being petty like that past Kokichi
    uGGGGH now I really wish Kokichi had been smart enough to pull off the Shuichi plan. That would’ve been cool as HELL to watch given how awesome it was whenever they tag-teamed in the trials
    Okay just a small word choice but the implications of “You always kept forgetting we WERE all just people” is the saddest part of this whole thing. Either Kaito considers everyone including himself basically already dead or he thinks that the killing game has stripped all of them of their humanity and isn’t that just fun WAIT NO COMING BACK TO THIS “I didn’t want you to die and I didn’t want her executed” he’s accepted that everyone’s already dead fuck im crying again
    The whole thing with ‘Kokichi’ is probably my favorite part of all this. Is Kaito aware that he’s doing it? Does he think he’s ‘channeling’ Kokichi? Is he just practicing getting the voice right for the trial? Also it’s ambiguous whether ‘Kokichi’’s lines are what Kaito actually thinks Kokichi thought or just Kaito giving his darkest thoughts a face which is AMAZING and the little details that serve as reminders that it’s just Kaito talking to himself are beautiful
    FUCK I JUST REALIZED ON REREAD. “his gaze hovering slightly to the left of THEIR ear” that’s BRILLIANT i LOVE YOU
    And then the sudden split of ‘Kokichi’ into Kokichi and the descriptions of their bodies no longer matching up is so good AND THEN THE REVEAL THAT KOKICHI IS STILL KAITO NO GHOSTS NO PRESENCE JUST ONE MAN SLOWLY LOSING HIS MIND i am weeping Kaito needs Kokichi to be okay. Kaito needs to convince himself that he’ll be okay too because he’s so sad and scared and guilty you are KILLING ME with this
    There are so many amazing details. The sudden end to the notes. Kokichi still taking the time to be funny in his last moments because GUESS WHAT THEY BOTH HAVE THE SAME FUCKING COPING MECHANISM. “Did you know I was trying to ask” breaks my entire heart and “Kokichi would probably just lie. “Yeah. I’ll be there”” kicks it into the dirt. Kaito knows he’s going to die. He knows the plan’s going to fail or the illness will get him too fast. This is legitimately one of the saddest and most impactful takes on this trial I’ve seen and I definitely owe you at least one (1) of my bones
    Conclusion: can’t really think of one. I’m crying. Regardless of story your Kaito needs a hug and I GLADLY volunteer

      Ha~ I'm glad you can find something to enjoy about my oneshots dude, since I had to take a small break from Video Game Cruelty Potential to write them >.< but they were a lot of fun to make! I'm gonna finish editing them and probably put the rest up today (I have... three?? Four more???), and then take a small break from writing, let my hands recover a little XD

      Oh! And since there's no spoilers to worry about, I'll just answer honestly one of your questions and say, yeah, Kaito knew what he was doing. Dude was aware he was talking to himself, he just needed to let himself pretend in order to cope. I've always thought the most fascinating part of mental breakdowns is being aware you're losing it and still not being able to do anything to stop it. Just being on that rollercoaster going 'whelp, strap in, I guess'.
