Comment on The Ones She Had Lost

  1. Why isn't Rhaegar's wife and children's mother Elia in this? She died in the keep as well.

    1. Great question! TL;DR: I thought about including Elia, but she didn’t fit into the atmosphere I was trying to create.
Since the Targaryens were super particular about keeping the “blood of the dragon” in the family, I imagined that Dragonstone could function as an afterlife location for all their ghosts to be together. The only ghost in the story who actually died at Dragonstone was Rhaenys; the rest were killed elsewhere and their ghosts came “home.”
I also wanted to keep it ambiguous as to whether the ghosts were real or a figment of Dany’s imagination. She knew Viserys, and he told her stories about their parents, and Ser Barristan told her about Rhaegar and his children, but Dany never showed any curiosity about who her sister-in-law was. Probably a little of that Targaryen elitism at work in her, to be honest.
      Thank you for asking!

      1. Didn't Rhaenys die with Elia and Aegon in Maegor's Holdfast? Rhaella died in Dragonstone, Rhaegar at the Trident and Aerys in the Red Keep.

        1. Oh, yes, sorry, I meant Rhaella; she died giving birth to Daenerys at Dragonstone.
