Ahhhh this was fantastic! I am coming into this completely fandom blind, having been vaguely aware of the source movies existence but not really knowing anything beyond that it was an animated film about a dog named Bolt. But you did a marvelous job of getting me fully invested with not just the title character, but all the other dogs that where a part of his young life with your engaging characterization and dialogue.
I definitely did not expect the story to take such a dark turn as it did in the final puppy mill chapter, but I appreciated the realness of anthropomorphizing such a horrific situation, and it made the rescue of the survivors all the sweeter. It was also a nice touch to see our charming "red light district" ladies got a happy ending of their own as well!
All in all this was a great read and dare I say a perfect origin story for this pup-- it will certainly be my headcanon moving forward if I ever do get a chance to see the source material. Thanks for sharing this, and I look forward to reading more of your works! <3
Glad you enjoyed this, and thank you so much for the enthusiastic comment!
When we first see puppy Bolt at an animal shelter (just moments before Penny adopts him) in the movie, there are all kinds of questions that come to mind. We know nothing of his background, why he’s there, and who the other youngsters are in the enclosure. Except for Penny and Bolt, all the rest of the characters are OCs, and it’s great to hear that they feel convincing. There are dark aspects to this fic for sure, but I tried to leaven things out with humor, mostly via the interactions between the puppies and the, ahem, experienced trio of females. No question Corabell, Dorabell, and Mae reeeeally enjoy their work. XD
