Fandom blind, but this is amazing! I love the backstory you created for a character that had none, and all your characters, from Bolt to his father to his friends are really well developed. The puppy mill scenes were so sad and also darkly realistic, considering how horrible puppy mills are in real life. This is a really well written fic, and I enjoyed every moment of it! You did a great job!

Yup, I've got two backstories in the series, one each for Bolt and Mittens. In Bolt's case, the scene where Penny adopts Bolt is canon and seen at the start of the film, but everything else (including Bolt's announcement of his new name to his puppy pals afterwards, as well as everything prior) is my own idea. Good to know it comes through well! The interesting problem here was this -- how did a cute puppy like Bolt end up at a shelter with five other youngsters in his enclosure? The puppy mill scenario made a lot of sense here, and I just extrapolated backwards from there. Puppy Bolt makes sense the way I've depicted him (he comes across as smart and strong-willed, but naive in the film), and surrounding him with equally compelling characters was a must. Between roguish Blaze, the energetic pups, and the three penned females who reeeeealy enjoy their work, it was a lot of fun to write.
