"ONLY ONE CAN BEND IT TO HIS WILL" Bilbo: Fuck that noise <3 Bless.
Hobbits are badass. For all that people compare them to the British, they're really more like the Irish--if not for creature comforts, they'd have taken over the world. And whacha wanna bet that Bilbo and Frodo weren't the only hobbits Gandalf employed in his "Adventures?"
Oooh, I think this Bilbo is slanting things less in a good vs evil way and more towards chaos and order. That is, elves and the others who like the status quo on one end, and Bilbo/dwarves/Nazgul(/Smaug?) on the other.
All of this is making me speculate that hobbits are so awesome because they're more agents of chaos than anything. Because, of course, they bring change. And while the pace of life in the Shire is slow, from what we see, it's full of political warfare. Not violent in the way outsiders might consider it, but not the order of the elves and such.
Also, considering their ties with agriculture, it might be argued that hobbits are (or were, at some point) more of the wilds than the elves and their forests. In a subtle way, now that they're peaceful. I mean, wilds/Wild Hunt/nature vs the elves and their slow, status quo, fear-of-change way of life.
Eeee, so Bilbo now has earth-fire within him--magma. And Hobbits are creatures of the earth, specifically growing things, so it looks like he's shaping up to be a Toph-level earthbender badass. You know, with magic instead of bending. With a side-order of life-and-death duality.
