When we first see Bolt in the film, he's in an odd situation -- a puppy abandoned in a shelter, surrounded by five other youngsters not of his breed. It was fun to imagine what set of unusual circumstances led to this, and a puppy mill beginning seemed like one likely possibility. Humor of course is something I enjoy writing. This is one of my darker stories, but there's always comedy or at least lighter elements that provide needed contrast (heck Shakespeare does it, no reason I can't). In this case, some of the exchanges between the puppies serve that purpose, but the real court jesters are the ribald trio of Corabell, Dorabell, and Mae (it's no accident two of them are named for heroines in Three Stooges shorts). There are a couple of important themes that run through these stories (karma and the power of love, for two), but the power of friendship is a recurring motif as well, and it comes to the fore here. Blaze was a fun OC to come up with, and I liked him so much that I brought him back in another story for a fuller fleshing out in "The Cameo." He looks just like Bolt and he enjoys movies and music, but there the similarities end -- he's a rogue, a reckless risk-taker, and a bit of a hustler, for one thing. Hey, he conned Cheyenne into a hot tumble, and that's how Bolt came to be.
