    Oh WOW this was FANTASTIC.

    I love technology/cultivation convergence here - using artificial cores to power cities, the power growing and growing as people packed in closer until there was just The City. It also reminded me a little bit of the core reactors for the final fantasy series.

    And of course Wen Ruohan and Jin Guangshan probably found ways to use the power of resentment for their own ends and profits, so didn't want Wei Ying's theories and knowledge getting out.

    The imagery of cities you used in this was all gorgeous - the subways, the greenhouses, the water tanks, the planetarium, everything felt so alive when you wrote it.

    Lan Zhan's mother leaving because she couldn't take the artificial buildup, and his brother following after was heartbreaking, and so well done.

    God, of course Wei Wuxian is the embodiment of Yiling. He took the city in and the city protected him.

    Also loved the balance of resentment and spiritual energy. And the way resentment could happen - not just from people thinking about jumping, or disillusioned, but even from kids who worried about grades and killed themselves studying. Strong emotions that you can't regulate, and had nowhere to go.

    Lan Zhan loves Wei Ying and trusts him, with his clan and his people, and because of that, Wei Ying is able to save the powerplant.

    Every bargain was just building up to the final one. Lan Wangji has always wanted to give Wei Ying all of himself. And in return he gets all of Wei Ying, a very fair bargain.

      - re: jgs and wrh, I felt like it kind of worked well with the vibe, knowing that somewhere in this city there are powerful men who make terrible plans in beautiful fancy rooms, your theory definitely fits with that and I like it a lot.
