Comment on A Different Promise

  1. Dang this fic was cathartic! That plot point in the comics really bothers me, Iroh just left his vulnerable seventeen year old nephew to dismantle a whole military industrial complex??? By himself?? Dude needs as much support as he can get!
This fic is great deconstruction of the comics

    1. It was sort of hinted towards in the show too that Iroh would do that. So that part is canon without the comics unfourtantly.

      1. Agreed. I still think it isn't a good idea, so I let some of the early in the comic series consequences start showing up and got Iroh to fix his mistake, resulting in a story that is AU to comics but not seriously to the main series. This is the point where my post-series fics are going to start careening away from comics canon, and Legend of Korra.

I did have them leave Ozai imprisoned in Ba Sing Se rather than moving him to the Fire Nation which is what canon seems to have done because moving the former leader back to his power base immediately after being deposed seems like a recipe for plots and rescue attempts. It isn't as if every other Water Chief and Earth King isn't a bender, after all.

        Thanks for the feedback.

    2. Thanks! I spent a significant amount of last year learning history, and dealing with the aftermath of defeat in a major war is really, really hard. The type of hard that can bring down dynasties and cause revolutions. Leaving a teenager alone to deal with that made me go 'eek!' and ask how in the world that was supposed to work out well.

    3. Glad you liked it, sorry I didn't reply sooner. Zuko could certainly use a lot more help than he gets in the comics, and why? Because Iroh wanted to run his tea shop and the GAang was distracted? If they were all embroiled in, say, preventing the Earth Kingdom from shattering into civil war or starving I could understand it, but I would have thought running a tea shop could have been delayed for a year or two.
