    I like that you got the pop culture references. It's not a requirement to have that layer of knowledge, but it does provide an extra dollop of enjoyment for those who know them. I also enjoy mixing approaches, and even my most serious stories have humor or lighter moments -- keeps things from getting too dire. Hope you decide to see the "Bolt" film -- it's wonderful (and if you do, try to watch a version that includes the closing song and accompanying animated bits, which are wonderful -- Netflix for example chops the ending off -- via YouTube if not otherwise available).
