Thank you for reading and commenting!! I totally see the points you’re making, and here’s my reasoning for those inclusions.
1. Book!Aziraphale was shady, though show!zira is nicer. In the books, the actual mafia stayed clear of him. They wanted his bookshop and sent men to intimidate him, only for this men to “disappear.” And then, from an outsider POV, what differentiates the mafia from say angels who come and go, dressed sharply and clearly not coming around for tea. And then you have his crazy hours and the fact that Aziraphale does not sell his books. He’s clearly not there for business. The shop seems more like a front. And when then entire Soho area is whispering that Mr. Fell is dangerous, well Jess isn’t going to start digging for evidence.
2. I’ll admit that this one is on me. I’m American, and I know that dear is used often in Britain, but I just hate when it’s used to service workers. It’s probably more acceptable in Britain, but it’s more frowned upon in America, except maybe the South. So I’ll give you that haha!!
3. This was less about Aziraphale being a criminal and more him being rude. On Aziraphale’s part, it was probably an off handed comment that she wasn’t even supposed to hear, possibly attached to a memory of being with Crowley. But unless you’re served food that is completely inedible, say something nice or don’t say anything. What was supposed to be a throwaway comment from Aziraphale became an insult from an outsider pov, and Jess can’t understand how nice Anthony who always complimented her plants could be with Mr. Fell who’s compliments somehow turned into insults.
I hope this helped! I’m not trying to defend Jess, of course! She, like all characters, has her flaws and you did a good job of pointing them out. But here’s some explanation of why she was like that haha!
