Woah, that last line...it totally changed what I was thinking the sign was for? I thought it was, basically, defend us. Stop evil, see justice done. But it's not keeping OTHER darkness out, is it? It's keeping one's own darkness in, when it would drive you to do the wrong thing. To choose revenge over justice or abandon the law or whatever.
Or maybe it's doing both of those, and more besides. I get the feeling it could mean a lot of things. But that last line is a killer. Amazing job.
That's how it played out in the story. An evil spirit tried to take Vimes over and couldn't, because his inner demons were worse - and he already kept those chained up.
