Oh my. I love this so. It's completely my cup of tea in every way (including the teahouse). I'm completed in love with your style - it's very fluid and easy and flows beautifully; and the voices are great, both gorgeously Northern and completely stroppily teenaged. I fell in love with them all and would have willingly spent hours and hours in their company. The way you've characterised the three brothers matches my canon for them almost perfectly - Gareth being forgiving and Gaheris vengeful and Gawain somewhere between the two and the fact that half of Gawain's anger is that he's scared for Lamorak is so lovely.
I loved how you captured the feel of the place as well, it was both small and grand and perfect. And the way you've reimagined the canon is so awesome, I love the idea of them being eternally reborn and the way you use memory and the things that are different. The repeating stories, the different time periods - beautiful and utterly thrilling - and the memories they're left with once they remember and that the sisters always remember, all broke my heart. Actually throughout this I had moments of laughter and utter glee and deep sorrow and chills - so, so good.
I could pick loads of quotes I liked, but shall force myself down to a few:
* “I didn’t mean to fall in love with her,” Lamorak says softly, and Gawain’s world falls apart.
* “I cannot imagine why.” Gawain’s words are like drumbeats, hard and resonant, even in the breeze of the cliff.
* Morgan starts up the cliff path, wondering which of them will remember first. Perhaps Lamorak. He always was a perceptive sort. Or maybe Gareth; being slain by a man you considered a second father does tend to stick with you, she’s found.
Thank you so much for writing this for me. :D I would glomp you forever if I could.
I'm so pleased that you like it! I was worried, because it was a bit different, and quite clearly needs to be part of something far bigger that I just haven't had the time to write yet, but you did say 'weird futuristic au' in your details, so I just sort of ran with that... Glad that it worked for you!
