Bucky questions how anyone ever managed to put up with him, if he’s apparently so similar to everyone in this jumbled mess of fake Avengers. How any of them are putting up with him when he barely manages to put up with himself nowadays and how he’s going to put up with them.
No real choice in that anymore, though. Just like always.
Or, Bucky learns how to live with the Thunderbolts, and that maybe they’re actually good for each other.

"I'm gonna get a room in town," Bucky said eventually.
John barked a laugh.
"No, you aren't."
Bucky's eyes finally slid to him. He exhaled a heavy breath. John looked good. He looked better than good. Sure, he had deep smile lines around his eyes and mouth, but his blond hair hid the worst of the gray. The difference was more obvious in his stubble: a little splash of salt in the cayenne pepper. Most of all, though, he looked achingly, heartrendingly familiar. He was the only familiar thing in an unfamiliar world.
"Come on, Barnes," John clasped his metal shoulder. He never shied away from it. "Let's go home."
Or, old man Bucky and old man John get back together.

"Bucky?" John rumbled against his neck.
He didn't reply. He couldn't speak around the frog in his throat. Instead, he reached for John's hand. Their fingers interlaced as natural as breathing. Bucky squeezed, putting everything he couldn't say into that one, lingering gesture.
Behind him, John relaxed. He squeezed back, soft and gentle.
"I'm here," he said quietly. "I'm always here."

She swung around toward where John was chained against the wall.
"Hit him," she pointed with one finger.
John sent out a silent prayer to whoever was listening. Please let the Thunderbolts be okay. Please keep them far away from the Winter Soldier–
Bucky lunged. His vibranium fist lifted back, and John had just enough sense to duck before it caved his skull in. There was an almighty crack. The concrete behind his head cratered like cardboard.

Steve nodded, before looking at him warily. “It's going to hurt, right?”
Howard grimaced, before deciding to be honest with Steve. He didn't want to start their partnership with a lie.
"I'm afraid so. Your cells will have to grow all together, bringing your cell mass, muscle mass, skeletal tissue, epithelial tissue and general structures to a higher level. Your metabolism will speed up, and fatigue will be reduced. It will be a very quick process, so that means it will also hurt a lot.”
Steve looked at him with bleary eyes. “I understand until ‘I’m afraid so’. Then I only heard some rather difficult terms and finally again that it will ‘hurt a lot’.”

“Tony.” Steve stared at him, swiping up the work and crushing it into a ball before tossing it in the bin, “I said it’s no one.”
Tony met his stare, huffing with a smirk on his face, “Doesn’t sound like ‘no one’ to me. Trail mix?” He offered out some from his hand. Steve declined his offer with a shake of his head, “Lighten up, Cap. We’ve all got hobbies- Of course, mine is doing talks at colleges, donating billions to oncology research, the occasional reinvention of the wheel, and sometimes saving the day- if yours is drawing women you fancy then-”
“It’s my mother, Tony.”

John would like to make it clear that he takes breakfast very seriously.
This is why when Bucky ambles down the hallway on silent— and god, would it kill the guy to make a little noise?— feet after everyone else had scattered from the breakfast table, John puts on his best glare and points wordlessly at the plate he’d reheated for the second time.
He frowns. “Look man, if you’re just not in the mood for it I can make you something else. You gotta eat more than that.”
There’s an annoyed knit between his brows as Bucky glares down at his hashbrowns, pushing around the greasier meats on his plate. The only thing he’s managed to eat so far was the english muffin and eggs. “No.” Bucky says, “it’s fine.”
John’s about to say “obviously not” when Bucky scoops some hashbrowns into his mouth and immediately blanches.
