Once, she’d had dreams, after furtive hook-ups in college, the girls she’d taken back to her dorm room to bite into their bottom lips, the experiments and explorations of soft skin instead of stubble, of wide hips instead of flat stomachs, until she’d had to accept the fact that there was no chance of her burying her want for women.
She’d thought that one day she would get to be out.
But when she’d gotten accepted to the job at the prosecutor’s office, and she’d thought that she could do good, and she’d seen the cracked door of the closet slam shut on her aching fingers.
It nearly broke a bone in her chest, and maybe it did, to freeze herself up into the closet.
But she’d had—hope is too much of a word for lips that always strive to be so precise in language, but it is accurate, in its own way, for the belief that maybe she could make some change from the inside.
And then that case.
And then that fucking case.
Jack McCoy overturns same-sex marriage in New York just so that he can put someone away for murder, and it is a price that Serena cannot bear to pay.
The tides are turning, and she is planning on turning with them.
She has to, to live with herself.

Claudia swallows. “I’m not a prostitute. Louis—he adopted me, when my parents left and the rooming-house burned down.”
Grace startles. At the admission of death or the admission of adoption, she can't be sure. If Grace knows Louis' true nature, of his relationship with Lestat, then she must have predicted that her brother would never have a child.
Then—Grace winces. “My brother’s daughter,” she says, voice quiet, voice contemplative, voice regretful, and she manages to make the title sound like more than Louis or Lestat ever has.
Her mother died. Her father ran off. Her adoptive parents let her burn.
Claudia is cursed to a half-existence forever because Louis missed the woman in front of her so much that he wanted to replace her.
But when Grace says my brother's daughter, some part of Claudia thinks "I am both of their daughter, I've got Lestat's hunger and Louis' ache, and Grace just sees the parts of me that are human."
(Grace meets Claudia next to a grave before her mother's funeral, and things go a little bit differently.)
