Kyotaro’s First Sleepover

Summary:

"Kyo-chan, dear, what is it?" His grandmother asks, looking up at him from where she sits at the kotatsu.

Kyotaro pulls his mouth in a thin line, practically trembling where he stands.

"I...I'm gonna..." He starts slowly.

His grandmother watches him patiently, kind gaze coaxing the answer out of him.

"I'm...gonna have a friend over...for...for a sleepover."

Notes:

anyone know if we got suginirei tomorrow

Work Text:

Kyotaro never thought he would ever have a sleepover. Kyotaro never imagined having a sleepover before.

Now he's dating Akihiko Nirei. He always wants to have sleepovers, and Kyotaro not only wants to please him, he finds himself wanting a sleepover himself.

Here's the hard part: asking his grandparents. They had met Nirei before; he brought him over to help grab things for Umemiya's garden.

However, this is Kyotaro. He has never really had a friend, let alone a sleepover with a friend. They don't know that he's dating the blonde, either.

Regardless, knowing their height difference, Kyotaro and Nirei agreed that Sugishita's house would be best. And so, here he was, fists clenched at his sides as he stares at the floor.

Her eyes widen for a moment. Kyotaro shifts on his feet where he stands anxiously.

Then, she smiles, "Well, that's wonderful dear! I'll make some extra dinner for them. Is it that blonde boy you brought over? Nirei-chan, I think?"

Kyotaro releases a breath he didn't know he was holding as she shoots a multitude of questions at him.

"Uh, yeah, it is him..." He nods

"Great! Bring him whenever you want."

---

Once he arrives at school, Kyotaro follows his usual schedule. He makes a bee line right for the rooftop. As he pushes open the door, he hears faint chatter.

It's not uncommon since Tsubaki and sometimes the other Kings will be up here talking to Umemiya, but...

When Kyotaro investigates, he has to blink a few times. Nirei is crouched by Umemiya's plants, gardening gloves on and Kyotaro's sunhat on his head.

To his left, Tsubaki is talking to him with a big smile, crouched down to the same level as Nirei.

The hat looked pretty big on the blonde. Kyotaro couldn't stop staring in endearment. That is, until Tsubaki notices he is there.

"Oh, Sugishita! Good morning!" She waves enthusiastically.

Kyotaro jolts in place in surprise. Nirei jerks his head to look in his direction the moment his presence is announced. He beams like the sun and jumps to his feet.

"Ah, good morning K-- Sugishita-san!!" Nirei corrects nervously, hurrying over.

Kyotaro suppresses a smile as he nods curtly, "Good morning."

The two decided to keep their relationship a secret for now. Which didn't matter because they made it incredibly obvious they were dating, so everyone knew. They don't know that though.

As Nirei and Kyotaro make small talk by the doors to the rooftop, Tsubaki watches them knowingly like a proud parent.

Kyotaro hunches over a little more (as if his posture wasn't bad enough already) to talk to Nirei in a lower voice.

"I told my grandma you're coming over," he informs quietly.

Nirei's eyes sparkle as a huge smile splits across his face, "Oh, really?! Perfect!"

He fiddles with his thumbs below his waist, breaking eye contact with the blonde, "And I...told her you're sleeping over..."

Nirei gasps and reaches for his hand, swinging it between them weakly to conceal the action.

"That's great!! I'm so excited for tonight!!" He cries softly.

The shorter boy laughs giddily, and Kyotaro can't suppress the twitch of his lips this time.

He reaches up to his head then, taking the hat off of his blonde hair. Nirei then reaches up, Kyotaro instinctively bowing lower so he can place the hat onto his smooth, blue hair.

"I'm gonna go down to class to say goodmorning to Suo-san and Sakura-san, okay? I'll see you there," Nirei informs softly, his gaze falling into something more winsome.

Kyotaro subconsciously furrows his brows at the mention of Sakura, and Nirei giggles at his habit like it's the sweetest thing.

He reaches up with a thumb to smooth the wrinkle between his brows, but he comes to an abrupt halt when he remembers where they are.

Kyotaro gets the memo though, and he relaxes his face with a sort of embarrassed look.

Nirei grins one more time, squeezing Kyotaro's hand before he departs down the stairs to their classroom. Kyotaro watches him go.

When he turns to the garden, he sees Tsubaki looking at him with a face that's a mix of smugness and adoration.

"Wh--...What?" Kyotaro questions, entirely oblivious.

She shakes her head, "No, nothing!!" she squeals.

To both Kyotaro and Nirei, the school day could not go any slower. Each minute felt like an hour going by. They kept sparing glances at each other, Nirei making faces to show his impatience to amuse Kyotaro.

The moment the final bell rang, Nirei threw himself out of his seat as Kyotaro stood faster than anyone’s seen before.

Suo looks between the two, “Oh? What’s the rush?” he asks, a smile on his face.

”Ah! I have to do something after this, so I need to hurry out. Sorry guys!” Nirei excuses, a nervous smile on his face.

Kyotaro just ignores the question and saunters out of the classroom. Nirei’s eyes follow him the whole way out.

Suo and Kiryuu share a quick glance. Then, they both smile innocently at Nirei.

”Have fun!”

Nirei raises a brow at the two, but he shakes it off and hurries out the door. By the time he catches up to Kyotaro, he had almost made it to the front of the school. For a slow walker, he gets to his destination quickly.

It was like the taller boy sensed him coming. Before the blonde can even call out, Kyotaro turns to face him. Nirei grins all the same.

”Hey! Sorry about that.”

Kyotaro just shakes his head.

”I have to go get a few things from my house, will you be okay with waiting for me at yours?” Nirei asks, slowing to meet Kyotaro’s pace.

”I’ll come with you,” he responds simply, looking down at the shorter boy.

”Ah, you don’t have to!” He frets, waving his hand.

”It’s fine,” is all Kyotaro responds with.

Nirei hesitates, but after a moment he smiles. The moment they’re away from any peeking eyes, he reaches to hold Kyotaro’s hand.

He jolts in surprise, but his fingers tentatively curl around the blonde’s despite himself. Nirei beams like the sun. Kyotaro feels his heart pound against his ribcage.

The two walk to Nirei’s house, hiding their hands between themselves as they get greeted by the townsfolk. At some point, they get some free anpan, and so now they bite at that as they approach the home.

When they reach the door, Nirei lets go of his hand (to both of their disappointment) and faces Kyotaro.

”Okay! I’ll only be a few minutes!” He announces, unlocking the door and hurrying inside.

Kyotaro nods as he goes, simply nipping at his anpan as he scans the area. Nirei’s house was a pretty normal size; Nirei had said before he was an only child and it was just him and his mom.

The window sills had some planters on them, long leaves hanging down and seemingly well-kept. There was a small garden on the front too with some flowers growing.

Despite not owning the house himself, it still felt very Nirei to Kyotaro.

After another few minutes, Nirei comes back out with a little duffel bag slung over his shoulder. Immediately, his hand finds itself back in Kyotaro’s.

”Okay! Lead the way!”

He does exactly that.

It’s not too far of a walk, just a little retracing of steps before they enter the neighborhood. Nirei looks around every few seconds, taking in the scenery. He made faces as if he hadn’t lived here his whole life, and Kyotaro couldn’t help thinking it was cute.

Kyotaro doesn’t waste any time unlocking the door. He lets Nirei in first, and they neatly place their shoes in the genkan before heading further inside.

“I’m home,” Kyotaro calls, not particularly loudly, but enough to be heard in the downstairs area.

”Welcome home, sweetie!” He hears from the kitchen. “Do you have Nirei-chan with you?”

Nirei immediately stands straight as Kyotaro’s grandmother enters the room. Her eyes soften when she sees the blonde next to her grandson.

”Y-Yes! It’s nice to see you again!” He yelps, bowing.

She chuckles, “Oh dear, no need for all of that. Make yourself at home.”

She looks to Kyotaro then. “Dinner is about to be ready. Will you set the table?”

He nods once and gets to it immediately. Then, his grandmother turns to Nirei, “I hope curry rice is okay with you.”

”Absolutely! Thank you so much,” Nirei says.

She heads back into the kitchen as a squeal—probably a teapot—starts to come from there. Once Kyotaro finishes setting the table, he gestures for Nirei to sit down.

Kyotaro heads into the kitchen for a moment. When he comes back out, it’s with food while his grandmother brings tea.

”Wow! This looks really good,” Nirei compliments happily.

His grandmother smiles, “Thank you. The recipe belongs to Kyotaro’s grandfather.”

”Where is he?” Kyotaro asks as he sets the food onto the table.

”Out with friends. He probably won’t be back until late.”

The long haired boy hums in acknowledgement as he sits down.

“Thank you for the food!”

As they eat, Kyotaro’s grandmother immediately shoots a barrage of questions at the blonde.

”How did you two meet?”

”How long have you been friends?”

”How did you choose Furin?”

Nirei answered them all with endless energy. That’s one thing Kyotaro admires about him; he doesn’t understand how he can consistently hold overbearing conversations like this without missing a beat.

When they finish up, Kyotaro and his grandmother stand to take the dishes into the kitchen. Nirei, however, immediately hops up behind them and follows.

”I’ll help you out!” He declares, picking up his dishes to go along with them.

”Oh, thank you dear!”

As the three clean the dishes together, the older lady catches Kyotaro sneaking glances at Nirei a lot. She observes him fondly, watching as Kyotaro waits for him to dry his hands at the door.

”Okay. We’re going upstairs,” Kyotaro says, looking at her with a curt nod.

She grins, “I’ll bring you boys some sweets soon, okay?”

”Thank you so much!” The blonde says.

Kyotaro leads Nirei upstairs to his room. As Nirei watches him shut the door, he can’t help giggling at the marks on his doorframe.

The tall boy only huffs in mild embarrassment as he turns away from it. He walks to the center of the room and sits at the tea table he has.

”I’m realizing I…don’t have much here to do,” He mutters, a little pout tugging at his face as he looks down,

Nirei halts his exploring to sit next to Kyotaro, “No, it’s okay! I’m just…happy to hang out with you…”

He smiles sheepishly as a blush covers his cheeks. Kyotaro looks at him, blushing now as well as he watches the blonde play with his fingers. He stares at his freckled hands a moment longer before he takes one to hold.

Nirei stares for a moment before he giggles to himself. Kyotaro squints in confusion, “What?”

”Nothing, nothing!” He squeezes the boy’s bigger hand in further reassurance.

Kyotaro squeezes back. Every time they hold hands, he can’t help thinking how perfectly Nirei’s fit into his. With his two hands, he can engulf his entire single hand no problem.

He’s cute. Everything about Nirei is so, so cute. His big eyes, his freckled face, his hands that are soft and perfect to hold. Kyotaro just thinks he’s so cute.

How did he get the perfect boyfriend? How did he get a boyfriend?

”Kyotaro-san,” The call of his name—his first name—rips him from his thoughts.

”What’re you thinking about?”

He purses his lips, “…Nothing.”

The blonde raises a brow, unconvinced, but drops it to keep looking around. Then, his eyes meet the box of vegetable plushies under his bedside table. He gasps and reaches for them.

”Aww!! Where did you get these?” He coos, pulling some out to look closer.

”Umemiya-san,” Kyotaro replies.

Nirei nods, “That makes sense!”

He picks up the little carrot and grins. Turning it towards Kyotaro, he situates the carrot plush in his lap and lifts up the arm to make the plush wave at the tall boy.

The blonde laughs heartily, “That was kinda stupid, huh?”

A grip on his head makes him gasp in surprise. He supposes though he should be used to that by now—

Kyotaro pulls him in for a kiss. A sweet, cuteness aggression-fueled kiss. Nirei shuts his eyes and lays his arms over his shoulders as he returns it. The taller’s grip loosens on his head, now just looping his fingers through curly, blonde hair.

They share a few more sweet, slow kisses between them until—

Knock, knock!

The two jump back a good 3 feet away from each other as Kyotaro’s grandmother opens the door with a small tray in her hands. Both of their faces are bright red. She glances between them for a beat, then just smiles kindly.

”I brought you boys some mochi. Kyo-chan told me you like mango once,” She announces as she puts the tray between them on the tea table.

Nirei nods vigorously, “Th— Thank you!” He yelps.

Kyotaro doesn’t look up from his lap, “Thank you…”

She watches them a moment longer before she leaves the room, shutting the door with a click behind her.

The two sit in silence for a while. Nirei picks up one of the small forks she supplied and takes a bite of a slice of the ice cream mochi. He hums joyfully.

“Mmm! This is so good, “ He exclaims.

Kyotaro follows suit and takes a bite of his ice cream as well. He nods along silently.

Nirei stabs a piece and places his other hand palm-up below it, scooting back towards Kyotaro and gesturing towards him. He smiles nervously.

”W-Wanna try some?”

Kyotaro blinks, meeting Nirei’s shaky, doe eyes. Once more, he nods, and opens his mouth for Nirei to put the mochi into his mouth. Kyotaro may not like sweets, but he can’t deny it's yummy.

”’S good,” He agrees. Nirei giggles joyfully.

Kyotaro takes a piece of his mochi as well, nudging the ice cream against Nirei’s lips. He opens his mouth and takes the bite, grinning widely.

”Melon? It’s so good!”

The corners of Kyotaro’s mouth quirk up to Nirei’s joy.

As they finish up their ice cream, they make small talk about random things. Vegetables, plants, school, hobbies, and more obscure topics. Then, they take turns changing into their pajamas.

When Kyotaro comes back from changing, he has something in his hand and a blush on his face.

Nirei looks at him and tilts his head, “What’s up, Kyotaro-san?”

”I…um…well…”

He glances around for a moment longer before he raises up his hand. In his palm is the packaging for a cute, moon-shaped nightlight. It had a big cloud and a star.

”You said…you don’t sleep without nightlights, so…I got you one…”

Nirei’s mouth falls open as he stares in awe. Then, he whimpers and hurries to hug Kyotaro tightly.

”I love you!” he whines, squeezing the taller boy.

Squinting his eyes shut in embarrassment and giddy love, he hugs the shorter blonde back and shoves his face into his hair.

Nirei sways them back and forth a little, which Kyotaro follows. They stand there for a while enjoying each other’s warmth. Sugishita gives him one more squeeze.

”You can sleep in the bed, I can sleep on the floor,” He states, pulling away from Nirei’s hair to look down at the blonde.

Nirei meets his eyes in clear surprise, “Oh! I was, um…” he trails off, face rapidly turning bright red.

Kyotaro tilts his head in a silent question. Nirei looks to the floor with a gulp, fiddling with his fingers behind the tall boy.

”Well, I…was hoping we could…share the bed…? And cuddle…?”

Kyotaro’s mouth falls open in absolute shock. Nirei immediately pulls back to wave his arms in reassurance.

”W-We don’t have to if you don’t want! Either way, I don’t wanna just—take your bed—“

”…sleep by the wall,” Kyotaro mumbles under his breath.

”H-Huh?”

”Y-You…can sleep by the wall…” he says just loud enough for the smaller boy to hear.

Nirei’s eyes widen. Then, he giggles to himself, excitement controlling him as he hurries to Kyotaro’s bed. He smiles sheepishly at Kyotaro before he climbs up and shuffles against the wall.

Kyotaro can’t help smiling at him sweetly. Nirei thinks his heart will explode.

Kyotaro hastily unboxes the nightlight and plugs it into the wall below his window. Then, he shuts off the main lights. He approaches his bed then, and Nirei. His eyes are still adjusting to the dark, but he already knows Nirei is smiling shyly up at him.

The tall boy sits on the edge of the bed, swinging his legs up to lay down and scoot under the covers. He further pulls them up over Nirei, who adjusts as needed.

Kyotaro feels the blush on his face as he rolls to face Nirei. He can see the blonde better now; he swears there’s a similar blush on his face.

”Hi,” he mutters, a small grin on his face.

”…Hi,” Kyotaro says back. Nirei shuffles a bit closer to Kyotaro.

They lie there for a while just looking at each other in silence. Then, Nirei snickers.

”What?” Kyotaro questions quietly.

”Nothing, it’s just…” The blonde trails off.

Then, he leans up and presses another kiss to Kyotaro’s lips.

”I really love you…”

Kyotaro swallows hard, absolutely full of reciprocation he couldn’t express. He huffs deeply, praying it’ll convey.

He can tell it does with the way Nirei’s eyes crescent with his smile. Then, he kisses Kyotaro again.

Nirei’s hand entangles in Sugishita’s hair as they trade kisses between them. Kyotaro cups his face as best as he can at this angle. He loves holding Nirei’s face; it’s so soft, and he gets to trace his freckles with his thumb.

Which is exactly what he’s doing now. Nirei sighs happily, tugging Kyotaro closer.

They share a few more kisses before the blonde pulls away with a final kiss to the corner of his mouth.

Kyotaro, most certainly bright red right now, slips his arm under Nirei’s head to curl his hand into his soft, blonde hair. He scratches his scalp a bit awkwardly, but it soothes the boy even more nevertheless.

Nirei lets his eyes fall shut as he yawns sleepily.

”Goodnight, Kyotaro-san…”

Kyotaro follows suit, curling himself closer to Nirei.

”…Goodnight, Akihiko.”

—-
When Kyotaro’s grandmother saw the lack of light seeping out beneath his door, she carefully opened it up to retrieve the tray.

Her eyes drifted around, looking for one of them on the floor. When she finds neither, she looks to Kyotaro’s bed…and pauses.

Nirei and Kyotaro are curled toward each other in the tall boy’s bed. Nirei’s hands are curled by his head as he sleeps. Kyotaro’s one arm is cradling his skull, the other behind his own head. He snores softly.

She smiles to herself. She watches them a moment longer before she reaches for the tray and exits the room.
