Chapter 1: Calming the storm.

Chapter Text

A Moons job is to be a killer. That’s their whole purpose, In many dimensions it’s the same story for Moon. He’s the machine created to be violent and cruel.

So, How does one change themselves to be something they were never created to be? how does one alter themselves to do something their very programming was never made to do?
How is something designed for destruction meant to create? How is something made for taking meant to give?

It was a mundane summer evening, The house felt stale and empty. It was only Sun and Moon at home right now, Solar was staying late at the plex with Jack, he’d insisted on working on some project he had on the go there, And Cosmos was off to discover himself…whatever that meant. Terra and Monty were next door at their own house.

So it was just Sun and Moon. Things had been rough between the two since they’d left the infected dimension. Between The stress of losing his memory’s and worrying about rising tensions between the Haven and the Sanctuary, he’d been snippy lately, particularly towards Sun.

Moon sat quietly at the kitchen table, drinking a cup of coffee despite the fact that it’s almost 6pm (cmon people it’s Moon he definitely doesn’t sleep anyways) He wasn’t sure exactly how long he’d been sitting in the dimly lit kitchen but his coffee had already gone cold.

His chair creaked slightly as he leaned back, taking his phone from his pocket to doomscroll for a while, He winced slightly as the bright light from his phone screen pierced into his optics like a thousand tiny needles. At some point as he was mindlessly scrolling through social media, Sun walked in. He went past Moon and walked straight over to the fridge, taking out a bottle of wine and pouring himself a glass.

There was a painfully long moment of silence. Moon set his phone down but neither said a word to each other. the room was dead silent, the only noises being Suns quiet sipping as he drank his wine and the occasional cricket from outdoors.

“You know, you’ve been pretty snappy lately, Moon.”

Sun finally said, a sigh escaping his voice box as he set the now empty wine glass down and poured himself another, Moon shifted uncomfortably in his chair.

“Yeah well, I’ve just had a lot of stuff going on lately. Ok?”

Moon murmured, his tone a little more defensive than he wanted. He’s well aware he’s had a very short fuse lately…he’s just so stressed out with everything going on. Sun only muttered a short “hm” in response, He grabbed the wine bottle and took it with him as he left the room, leaving Moon alone in the dim kitchen.

Moon groaned quietly as he buried his head in his hands, pulling the rim of his hat over his face for a moment as if he were hiding from the world. A heavy sigh escaped his voice box.

“I just need to distract myself.”

He muttered to himself. His chair screeched across the tile floor as he stood up quickly, discarding the cold cup of coffee in the sink as he left the kitchen.

Hours later, he found himself in his lab. It was silent, The only sounds being the occasional whirring from his fans or the keyboard clicking whenever he’d eventually think of something to write; only to immediately delete it afterwards.

He leaned back in his chair, closing the computer. He tapped his foot anxiously as he ran a hand over his faceplate. His brain felt disconnected from his body, his thoughts were all jumbled up. He’d been down here for hours and what had he gotten done? Nothing! Absolutely nothing!

“Oh fuck this…”

He grumbled, pushing off of his desk as he stood up and stormed back towards the entrance to the lab. He eventually got back upstairs, so he went to the living room.

Sun was there already, sleeping halfway on the couch halfway on the floor, two bottles of wine deep. He was drooling on the couch cushions.

Moon huffed in annoyance, but, instead of just walking away he went to Sun and stood over him for a moment, grimacing at the strong smell of alcohol that hit him when he got closer to his brother. Despite wanting to just leave him down here and go to bed, He kneeled down beside him. Shaking his shoulder.

“Sun? Hey Sun! Wake up.”

He whisper yelled, continuing to shake Suns shoulders until the other started to rouse.

“Ugghhhmm- w-wha- Moooooonnnn…Hiii”

Sun mumbled, slurring his words from the alcohol. Moon rolled his eyes.

“You fell asleep halfway on the floor, I’m gonna take you upstairs ok?”

Sun mumbled something incoherent in response. His rays retracted slightly as he buried his face in the couch cushion, continuing to drunkenly murmur.

Moon reluctantly slid an arm underneath suns legs and his other around his shoulders then he lifted him up, Sun barely even stirred.

Moon slowly carried Sun up the stairs and down the hallway, Suns bedroom door creaked as Moon pushed it open, he made his way through the dark room, using the dim red light from his optics to see. He laid Sun down on the bed, Gently draping a blanket over his shoulders.

Before he could leave, he heard Sun mutter something again.

“Moon? I- i really miss Nexus..”

Instead of sympathy, instead of sadness, Moon felt a hot flash of anger when Sun said that. It was like getting pricked by a needle, he didn’t know why it pissed him off so much, Suns just drunkenly muttering stuff, so why’s he so mad about it?

Or is it because it was specifically about Nexus? Because deep down inside…

He knows that Sun, Solar, and everyone else liked Nexus more than him.

He stood there silently for a moment, red optics casting a soft glow over Suns form on the bed. Then he walked back to the door, stepping into the hall and shutting it behind him with a quiet click.

He walked across the hallway to his own room, his mind still spiralling. He really misses Nexus? That guy? He must like him more..they all like him more. Moons just the backup, the guy they brought back to try and fill in the gap that Nexus left behind.

It was JUST Sun muttering something while he’s drunk? Why was this pissing him off so bad?? Moon shut his door behind him and stood there for a moment in his room, his hands shaking from how hard he had them clenched into fists. He bit his tongue to stop himself from yelling.

He hated himself for being angry, he hated it so so much..

Those words rung in his head, over and over again, It was just drunken muttering! Why was he so angry about it! Why did his mind always think that everything was some personal attack on him?!?

His fans whirred loudly as he finally took a deep breath, unclenching his fists and walking over to his bed.

He collapsed onto the mattress with a soft thud, sighing heavily as he reached up to turn off the lamp, plunging the room into darkness. The only light now was the faint red glow from his optics.

He stared mindlessly into the dark, thoughts still swirling around like a storm that wouldn’t pass.

He finally shut his eyes, the loud whirring from his fans fading into quiet background noise as he tried to calm down enough to fall asleep.
