Work Text:
The garden faced the sea, where the sky slowly turned into shades of gold and blue. White roses decorated the aisle, gently moving with the soft afternoon wind. It was a calm place, perfect for new beginnings and quiet hope. Kaylee stood under the flower arch, holding a bouquet of carnations. She looked pretty in her simple ivory dress, but her smile didn’t seem fully happy. Across from her, Joy who gently squeezed her hands, quietly comforting her without saying a word.
Joy had always been her safe place her bestfriend. Their decision to marry wasn’t born from passion or romantic feelings but from a promise, a promise to build a life of companionship, trust, and mutual understanding.
Among the guests sat Jia, which is Kaylee’s other best friend and her sister’s ex. She watched the ceremony with a knowing expression, as if she understood the hidden feelings behind the celebration, behind this wedding of her bestfriend.
Kaylee’s kept gazing towards the crowd, searching for something or perhaps someone she told herself she no longer needed. But the heart has a way of remembering what the mind tries to forget.
Five years ago passed since Morgan left. Kaylee’s ex. She walked away without explanation. No fight. No betrayal. Just a quiet conversation where Morgan, with tears in her eyes, had said, "I'm breaking up with you, Kaylee." “It’s not your fault. There’s nothing wrong with you.” and then she left, leaving Kaylee with questions that stayed in her mind long after the goodbye of no proper explanation or closure..or anything.
The ceremony continued, the officiant’s gentle voice. “Love is not only about passion,” the officiant said. “It is also about commitment, trust, and the decision to stand beside someone through all of life’s uncertainties.” Kaylee tries to listen on the words, but her mind keeps drifted to memories she had spent years trying to bury... the late-night conversations, the laughter, shared dreams, and the warmth of a love that once felt unbreakable. And Their memories together, and a future they build that begins to buried after the wedding.
As the ceremony neared its conclusion, the officiant paused and looked at the guests. “If anyone here objects to this union, SPEAK NOW or FOREVER HOLD YOUR PEACE.”
The garden ceremony suddenly went quiet. The flowers seemed to stop moving, and even the wind felt still. Then, from the back of the crowd, a shaky voice broke the silence.
“Please… wait.”
Kaylee’s heart stopped.
She turned slowly, fear and hope in her chest. Standing at the edge of the aisle, slightly out of breath as if she had run a great distance, was Morgan. Time seemed to collapse in on itself.. Morgan looked different..older, more tired but her eyes still carried the same depth Kaylee remembered. Murmurs spread among the guests, but Kaylee heard nothing, all she could hear was the loud beats of her own heart.
From her seat, Jia let out a shaky breath, feeling both relieved and nervous at the same time “You came,” she whispered to herself, her eyes filling with tears as she watched her sister step forward.
“I’m sorry.." Morgan said, her voice shaky. “I know I have no right to interrupt this day. But I couldn’t let it pass without finally telling you the truth that you deserve.”
Kaylee’s hold on her bouquet tightened.
“You already said everything you needed to say five years ago, Morgan." she replied, her voice trembling. “Or rather… you said nothing at all..” with almost sounds bitter.
The words stayed between them in silence.
Morgan nodded, with pain across her face.
“You’re right, and I’ve regretted that every single day since.”
Joy gently released Kaylee’s hands, giving her a small, reassurance nod. “Go,” she whispered. “You deserve answers.”
With hesitant steps, Kaylee walked down the aisle until she stood a few feet away from Morgan. The distance between them felt both near and very far at the same time.
"Why..?” she asked, her eyes filling with tears. “Why did you leave me without an explanation? Do you know how many nights I spent wondering what I did wrong?...”
Morgan’s eyes filled with tears. “You did nothing wrong,” she said. “That was the truth then, and it’s the truth now. The real reason I left… was because I was afraid.”
“Afraid of what?” Kaylee demanded.
Morgan took a shaky breath. “Afraid that I wasn’t capable of loving you the way you deserved. You loved so deeply, so wholeheartedly, and I felt like I was constantly falling short. I was struggling with my own unresolved issues..fear of commitment, confusion about my future, and the belief that I would only end up hurting you if I stayed. I thought I'm protecting you, by me leaving.."
She continued, her voice breaking.
“Instead of communicating, I chose the coward way out. I convinced myself that leaving without a detailed explanation would make it easier for you to move on. I thought that if you believed it wasn’t your fault, you’d heal faster and move on from me,but I was wrong. My silence only caused more pain.”
Kaylee’s tears falls down her face.
“You don’t get to decide what’s easier for me." she whispered. “I would have fought for us. I would have stayed, even in the uncertainty. I would have help you figure it out, figure out our relationship..because its You and I. Not only Morgan. Not only Kaylee. What hurt the most wasn’t losing you it was not knowing why.."
“I know,” Morgan replied softly. “And I’ve carried that guilt ever since. I’m not here to ask you to choose me or to stop the wedding. I just needed to give you the closure I should have given you years ago.”
Kaylee looked back at Joy, who was still standing calmly under the arch, her face soft and reassuring.
"Joy and I are getting married because we promised to take care of each other,” Kaylee said. “There’s love, but it’s the kind built on friendship and safety. I thought choosing certainty would help me finally let go of the past.”
Joy stepped forward, offering Kaylee a reassuring smile. “I’ve always known that a part of your heart was still searching for that answers.” she said. “Whatever you decide, I support you, Kaylee and I'm happy that finally get the closure you've always wanted." Jia also stand from her seat then, offering Kaylee an encouraging nod. “Follow your truth Kay." she said gently. “Go on, I support you, will always be.” Jia, smiled at her best friend knowing that Kaylee still loves her sister, Morgan.
Kaylee turned back to Morgan, studying her face for sincerity. The anger she had carried for years began to soften, replaced by a sense of release and peace.
“I can’t pretend that everything is suddenly okay." Kaylee said honestly. “But hearing the truth… it helps. It gives me the closure and peace I needed.”
Morgan nodded, accepting her words. “That’s all I hoped for.”
After a long pause, Kaylee reached out and gently took Morgan’s hand. “I don’t know what the future holds for us, but I’m willing to start with forgiveness not necessarily to rekindle what we had, but to finally move forward without the weight of unanswered questions.”
Morgan’s eyes softened, filled with quiet gratitude. “Thank you. That means more than you know.”
Kaylee then turned to Joy and Jia she embraced them warmly. “Thank you both for loving me in the way I needed during my healing." she said.
Joy smiled. “Some relationships aren’t meant to be romantic to be meaningful. You’ll always have me.” Standing nearby, Jia added with a soft smile, “And you’ll always have me too, no matter where this next chapter leads.”
The officiant addressed the guests with a gentle smile. “It seems that today is not about a wedding, but about truth, forgiveness, and new beginnings.”
The ceremony slowly turned into a celebration of friendship and healing. As the sun set and the sky turned shades of amber and pink, Kaylee felt a sense of peace she hadn’t experienced in years.
Later, at the quiet edge of the garden, Kaylee and Morgan stood next to each other in silence.
“Thank you for finally telling me the truth." Kaylee said softly.
“I’m sorry it took me so long,” Morgan replied.
Kaylee offered a small, hopeful smile. “Sometimes, closure doesn’t come when we expect it. But when it does, it gives us the freedom to choose our next chapter.”
They walked forward into the evening not defined by their past, but guided by the possibility of healing, forgiveness, and whatever the future might hold for them.
