Chapter Text

Bassie walked slowly through the floor, she had been sent off to find the last machine since no one else could find it. To make things worse, it was a blackout… with Scraps. Why Scraps? Why was it always Scraps that Bassie had the unfortunate encounters with in blackouts? That was a question to wonder about another time.

Bassie turned a corner, near the far end of the floor, and was met with the glowing red light of the final machine.

She dashed over, her hands gripped the wheel of the machine tightly, hands shaking as the ichor inside slowly dripped down. She quickly glanced up, making sure no twisted was near enough to attack her. She kept her guard high. Bassie was about to return her gaze to the machine she was working on, when suddenly a loud buzz came from it, followed by the gurgling sound of ichor spurting out from the tube at the top.

“Shit-!” Bassie exclaimed through gritted teeth, she had distracted herself with her own worry and failed a skill check.

Bassie practically lept off the machine, surely Scraps and any of the other mindless twisteds roaming around heard her mistake.

Bassie ran off into the darkness, like a chicken missing its head. She prayed she wouldn't run into a twisted by surprise.

She quickly ducked behind a large bookshelf, hugging the shelf, catching her breath.

Bassie peered cautiously around the corner, gazing out into the darkness of the floor.

No twisteds were near, only the bright red light of the uncompleted machine shined.

Bassie sighed with relief, walking back out.

She was just about to start extracting the machine when a tail shot out from the darkness and straight towards her.

Bassie yelped, diving to the ground to avoid getting hit. She landed on the ground with a loud huff.

A low snarl echoed through the darkness as the tail retreated, Scraps ran out from the darkness.

Bassie quickly scrambled off the ground, running around trying to find a looping spot to lose the bloodthirsty twisted hot on her heels.

Bassie quickly dodged another attack, when she turned to continue running however, she tripped and fell right over a research capsule.

“N-no! Leave me alone you dirty cat!” Bassie yelled as she slowly backed away from the looming threat before her, still on the floor.

Scraps let out a low snarl, slowly stalking towards the downed easter toon. Bassie thought she was dead meat.

“Back away from her you filthy beast!” A loud voice yelled.

Soulvester ran towards the twisted before Bassie, sword drawn.

Scraps attempted to hit the knight with her tail, but his armour simply deflected the attack.

With a yell, Soulvester striked Twisted Scraps’ eye with his sword, ichor coating the blade.

The Twisted let out a loud yelp and slammed her hand over her eye, before advancing into the darkness, her tail between her legs.

Soulvester huffed, glancing over to where Bassie lay, stunned and dumbfounded.

As the knight and basket locked eyes, Soulvester’s gaze seemed to soften.

“Bassie!” he called, rapidly approaching Bassie, a ghostly teal glow following him as he ran.

“ Soulvester…! Thanks for saving me” Bassie thanked.

“You most welcome,” Soulvester replied, reaching out a hand to help her up.

“Dost thou need assistance? A heal mayhaps? Thou took quite a tumble,” Soulvester questioned, helping pull Bassie off the ground.

“No thanks soul… you don't need to worry about me.” Bassie replied, dusting herself off.

“But tis’ my duty as knight to protect fair maidens such as yourself,”  Soulvester stated, taking a slight bow before her, “that filthy twisted almost caught thou!”

Bassie smiled warmly, “it's okay soul, there's no need to protect me 24/7…” she joked.

“Well, i guess i should finish that machine-”

Soulvester leaped in front of her, “No, no. This won't do, I shall complete that unruly machine with haste,” Soulvester stated defiantly. “Hark, head back to thy elevator before thou gets hurt.”

Bassie sighed, “if you say so…” she replied.

She turned back, walking through the darkness back towards the elevator.

Once she finally arrived, she was met with weird glances from the toons who stayed back.

“...what's wrong?” Bassie questioned, leaning up against the wall near the elevator.

“?enihcam tsal eht hsinif annog erew uoy thguoht I”  Blot replied.

“Yeah, uhm, whatever he said,” Flyte added.

Bassie sighed, “Soulvester told me to head back, he's gonna do the last machine instead.”

Blot hummed as the outside wind shook the building, making the walls creak.

Flyte shivered, "Shouldn't he be done by now? Isn't he fast at extracting…?”

Blot shrugged, “.thgirb ytterp si wolg sih ,ti ffo desahc tog ylbaborp eH”

Bassie stayed silent. Shifting her gaze from the two toons back out into the darkness of the floor.

Bassie flinched when she heard a loud noise, followed by a yelp behind her. She turned quickly, the elevator door had opened, and blot, -who had been leaning against the door- was scrambling up off the floor and into the now open elevator.

Bassie quickly entered the elevator, followed by Flyte.

The three toons now stood in the elevator, awaiting Soulvester’s return.

“?eh si erehW” Blot questioned.

Bassie’s eyes darted around the room as the elevator timer slowly ticked down.

20… 19… 18…

“Soulvester!?” Flyte hollered, "C'mon the elevator’s gonna close soon !!”

Bassie saw the ghostly glow of Soulvester approaching.

“...Tis’... I!...” Soulvester huffed.

Bassie could tell he was out of stamina, taking quick breaks in between running to stop and catch his breath.

The elevator was 15  seconds away from closing, there was no way he would make it in time.

In a split second decision, Bassie leapt out of the elevator, running full speed towards the tired knight.

Bassie quickly grabbed Soulvester, slinging him over her shoulder.

Soulvester yelped as Bassie ran back, ducking into the elevator just mere seconds before it closed.

Blot and Flyte stared at Bassie in stunned silence, Soulvester still slung over her shoulder.

“.eissaB ,evom ssadab ytterp a saw taht …woW” Blot commented.

“Nice save!” Flyte added.

“O-oh, it's nothing really, the idea suddenly popped into my head…” Bassie replied.

“!sselehtenon evom taerg a llitS” Blot replied.

“Hah.. can thoust.. Unhand me?” Soulvester asked, his voice a tad shaky.

“Oh! Sorry…” Bassie replied, settling Soulvester back on his feet.

“...Twas a brave deed to rescue me,” Soulvester complimented, dusting himself off.

“It's nothing really…” Bassie replied sheepishly, twiddling her thumbs.

“I am eternally grateful,” Soulvester spoke, getting down on one knee, bowing his head towards Bassie.

Soulvester took one of Bassie’s hands and lowered it towards his face, pressing it up against where his mouth would be, his metal helmet cool against Bassie’s flushed skin.

Bassie’s face blushed bright pink.

She heard Blot gag behind her.

Chapter Text

All the runs for the day were over, and all the toons throughout Gardenview had settled down for the night. Bassie laid in her bed, the soft pinkish-purple lights of her room shining down.

She sighed as she reached over to her nightstand, grabbing the book she was reading.

She settled in, opening up the book and flipping through the pages, trying to find where she left off.

Her reading was interrupted by a quiet knock on the door.

“Come in…!” She called.

The door creaked open, Soulvester sheepishly walked in.

“Soulvester? Is there anything wrong? Do... Do y-you need my help…??” Bassie questioned, sitting straight up.

Soulvester cleared his throat. “...Thy… Thy royal highness and his queen hath decided to rule my living quarters."

Bassie snickered, “y-you mean… Gourdy and Toodles kicked you out of your own bedroom??”

Soulvester looked ashamed, “Mayhaps…”

Bassie sighed, “Fine, you can sleep with me tonight, after all... I did save you today.”

Soulvester’s look seemed to brighten, quickly running over to Bassie’s bed.

Bassie moved over to allow Soulvester room to lay down.

Soulvester pulled the soft, crocheted blanket over himself, stopping to examine the yarn

“Thine blanket is extraordinary! Where did you obtain this?” Soulvester questioned.

“Brightney made this for me! She also recommended this book on fairytales,” Bassie replied, showing Soulvester the book she was reading.

“Interesting, I didn't know she could crochet.”

Bassie smiled, “you know, you don’t have to keep up that knight facade around me.”

Soulvester scoffed, “tis’ not merely a facade! I am a true protector of everytoon! Did you learn nothing from today!?”

“.... I almost forgot, how you saved me from a twisted? And then I was the one who swept you off your feet?”  Bassie replied, turning over and flipping her light switch off.

A low huff came from Soulvester, the only light source was his ghostly glow illuminating the room.

“Hah… goodnight Soulvester,” Bassie yawned.

“Hmm, I pray you have a good night’s rest as well, Bassie.”

Chapter Text

Bassie woke up, golden light was spilling in from the hallway outside.

She tried to turn over to get up, but something tight was wrapped around her torso.

Bassie’s eyes shot open, she assumed the worse and that the ceiling had fallen in on her while she was sleeping, but no.

She looked down and saw that Soulvester was grabbing onto her body with such force that she could barely move. Still sleeping soundly.

Bassie’s face flushed a bright red, she needed to get up to go eat. On the other hand however, she couldn't help but notice how cute Soulvester looked when he slept, making tiny whistling noises.

Bassie simply stared at the sleeping knight that clung onto her, feeling his chest against her side, rising with every breath.

Bassie sighed, she lightly tapped the side of Soulvester’s helmet.

“Psst, hey… Soulvester you gotta wake up, it's breakfast,” Bassie whispered.

Soulvester mumbled, his eyes fluttering awake.

“...it appears so…o-oh-” Soulvester yawned, practically jumping out of bed once he realized he had been cuddling with Bassie in his sleep.

Bassie hopped out of bed and followed him to her door, a small smile present on her face.

Soulvester stumbled back towards Bassie’s door, his face bright red with embarrassment.

“Please f-forgive me-! Twas’ truly a mistake,” Soulvester stuttered, Bassie stopping right in front of him, his gaze wavering, avoiding eye contact.

Bassie simply smiled, a small laugh escaping her mouth.

“It's okay, there's no need to apologize," Bassie spoke.

“B-but-”

“Between you and me,” Bassie started, Soulvester staring deep into her eyes, “I actually kinda liked it, you’re cute when you're asleep.”

Bassie gave Soulvester a small pat on his shoulder, then walked out of the room.

Soulvester stood, stunned for a few seconds, his face red hot with blush.

He shook his head, turning back to face out into where the various other toons were taking seats, Sprout and Cosmo handing out plates of muffins and fruits.

Soulvester ran out from the room, Bassie was taking a seat next to Connie, who was devouring a chocolate muffin roughly the size of her hand.

“Bassie!” Soulvester called, running up to Bassie’s side. “Is it.. Uhm, okay if I take this seat?” he asked, gesturing to the empty chair beside Bassie.

“Go ahead,” she replied, Sprout handing both him and Bassie a blueberry muffin smothered in butter.

Soulvester sighed with relief, sitting down next to her.

He looked back at Connie, her eyes wide and mouth hung open with disbelief.

“What.”

“..you slept with a GIRL last night!?”

Soulvester shushed his ghostly sister, “keep your voice low! Twas’ ONLY because his majesty and her Royal highness decided to rule over my bedroom- er, living quarters!!”

Connie gave him a weird look, "That's strange,” she replied, taking a huge bite of her muffin.

“How so?”

“It's strange because I saw Gourdy and Toodles playing with Dyle’s model trains out in the lobby, and BOY was he mad!”

Soulvester sat in stunned silence, his face heating up with embarrassment.

Connie’s eyes widened as she swallowed, “wait, you mean…”

Soulvester shook his head, trying to signal to his sister to stop talking.

“.... you lied about Gourdy and Toodles so you could SLEEP WITH BASSIE?!?” Connie gasped.

“...what?” Bassie replied, deadpanned.

Soulvester quickly looked around the dining area, thankfully due to the loud chatter of the other toons nobody heard Connie.

“...Soulvester, is that true??” Bassie questioned, looking up at Soulvester.

Soulvester gave his sister a dirty look, “...indeed.” he spoke with gritted teeth, his face flushed.

Bassie blushed, moving her hand over to hold his.

Soulvester looked at her in confusion.

“If you wanted to sleep with me you could've just asked,” Bassie replied, “are you… in love with me…?”

Soulvester shut his helmet visor and crossed his arms, his face practically on fire, “...y-yes..” he mumbled.

“No way!” Connie gasped, much quieter this time.

Bassie smiled, “well, i love you too,” she spoke, lifting his visor, she noticed Soulvester was practically melting due to how flushed he was.

Soulvester sighed loudly, leaning back in his chair with relief.

“B-but i swear m’love, the cuddling was an honest accident!” Soulvester pleaded.

Connie spat out her drink.

“I believe you,” Bassie replied.

“Cmon,” she started, standing up from her seat.

Soulvester stood up, his hands felt weak and clammy.

“Lets go back to your floor, maybe Gourdy and Toodles are looking for their brave knight to go rescue the fairest of them all?”

“Tis’ a fabulous idea-!” Soulvester replied, still obviously flustered. He cupped his other hand over Bassie’s.

“...I can't believe you just scored BASSIE FREAKIN BLOOMINGTON!!!! Oh man Gigi and Flutter are gonna FREAK when they hear about this!”

“Be quiet!” Soulvester snapped, grabbing his uneaten muffin off the table and throwing it directly in his sister’s face.
