The wind over the Grand Line had changed. It was subtle at first, just a cooler edge riding the sea breeze, but everyone aboard the Thousand Sunny felt it.
The sky stretched wide and pale above the ocean, painted with long streaks of drifting clouds. The sea itself rolled lazily, the waves quieter than usual, as if the world had decided to take a slow breath.
At the bow of the ship stood Luffy, arms stretched wide, sandals planted against the carved lion figurehead. He sniffed the air dramatically.
"Hm."
Behind him, Usopp leaned against the railing.
"Hm, what?"
Luffy sniffed again.
"...It smells like food."
Usopp blinked.
"That's literally what you always say."
"I mean it this time!"
"YOU ALWAYS MEAN IT!"
From the deck above, Nami sighed loudly while adjusting the Log Pose strapped to her wrist. The needle trembled, slowly settling towards the island ahead.
"Actually," she said, "something is different."
The crew looked up. Even Zoro, who had been half asleep against the mast, opened one eye.
"What now?"
Nami gestured towards the horizon.
"There."
At first, it looked like a normal island rising from the sea. Forested hills, rocky cliffs, and a shallow crescent-shaped bay. But the closer the Straw Hats sailed, the more obvious it became.
The entire island was burning with color. Forests of deep red leaves. Golden hillsides. Amber canopies glowing like fire beneath the sun. Leaves drifted off the island and floated across the water in slow spirals.
"Whoa..." whispered Chopper.
"It's like the trees are on fire!" Usopp said.
But the flames didn't burn. They fell gently through the air like snow. A sudden gust swept across the Sunny's deck. With it came a scent none of them expected. Dry leaves. Cold soil. Wood smoke. Sweet fruit. Even Sanji paused mid-step, carrying a tray of drinks from the kitchen.
"...That's new." He inhaled again. "Spiced fruit... roasted nuts... mushrooms...?"
Luffy gasped.
"IT'S DEFINITELY FOOD!"
Sanji smacked him.
"Don't sniff like a dog, captain."
Meanwhile, Robin rested her arms on the railing, quietly observing the island. Her dark eyes followed the falling leaves drifting across the waves.
"How unusual," she murmured.
The others looked at her.
"What is?" Chopper asked.
Robin smiled softly.
"This island's climate is completely stable."
Nami frowned.
"What do you mean?"
Robin gestured towards the forests.
"The trees are permanently in autumn."
Everyone stared again at the island. The colors were too perfect. Too endless. Too alive.
"Meaning?" Usopp said nervously.
Robin tilted her head slightly.
"Meaning autumn never ends here."
"LAND!"
Luffy didn't wait another second. Before the Thousand Sunny had even fully anchored, he stretched his arm towards the shore.
"Gomu Gomu no-"
"LUFFY DON'T-"
"ROCKET!"
He launched himself across the water and vanished into the forest with a crash of leaves. The crew stared. Silence. Then-
"LUFFYYYY!" Nami screamed.
Zoro stood up and grabbed his swords.
"Well. Guess we're going."
Usopp groaned.
"Why does he always run into mysterious islands first?!"
Chopper panicked.
"What if there are monsters?!"
Franky flexed dramatically.
"If there are monsters..." He slammed his fist into his palm. "Then it's gonna be SUPER!"
By the time the rest of the crew stepped onto the island, the air had grown noticeably cooler. Their boots sank into thick layers of leaves. Each step made a soft crunch. Chopper immediately started jumping through piles of leaves.
"Look! Look!"
Leaves exploded around him. Usopp couldn't help smiling.
"Okay... that's actually kinda fun."
A breeze passed through the trees. And suddenly-
WHOOSH
Thousands of leaves lifted into the air. They spun around the crew like a swirling storm of autumn colors. Even Zoro paused.
"...Huh."
The forest was quiet. Almost too quiet. No birds. No insects. Only the sound of drifting leaves.
"Doesn't this feel creepy?" Usopp whispered.
Robin chuckled.
"Perhaps the forest is simply watching us."
That did not help Usopp at all. Sanji crouched near the ground. He pointed at the leaves.
"Footprints."
Massive ones. Zoro smirked.
"Captain idiot."
They followed the trail deeper into the woods. The sunlight dimmed beneath the dense canopy. Every few seconds, another wave of leaves would fall around them. The ground looked like an ocean of color. Suddenly-
A distant voice echoed through the forest.
"FOOOOOOOOOOD!"
Everyone groaned.
"That's him," Nami said.
But before they could continue, a sharp sound sliced through the air.
SHHHING
A blade of wind cut across the forest. Trees shuddered. Leaves exploded into the air. Zoro's hand instantly moved to his swords.
"Someone's here."
A figure dropped from a tree branch above them. He landed silently on the forest floor. Tall. Broad-shouldered. Wearing a long crimson cloak that blended perfectly with the autumn forest. A sword rested casually at his side. The man looked at them with calm, unreadable eyes.
"Pirates."
Zoro stepped forwards.
"Yeah."
The stranger's gaze moved across the crew.
"Leave."
Usopp blinked.
"Uh... what?"
The swordsman gestured around them.
"This island is not meant for outsiders."
Leaves drifted down between them. For a moment, no one moved. Then Nami crossed her arms.
"Listen, we're just picking up our captain and leaving."
The swordsman shook his head slowly.
"He has already disturbed the forest."
From deeper in the woods, a distant roar echoed. The ground trembled. Chopper squeaked.
"What was that?!"
The swordsman closed his eyes briefly.
"...Too late."
Another roar thundered through the island. Leaves erupted into the air like a rising storm. Zoro grinned slightly.
"Well, guess we're staying."
Far deeper in the forest, Luffy stared at the most incredible discovery of his life: a tree full of massive orange fruits.
"Pumpkins?"
He poked one. The fruit split open. Steam poured out. Instead of a core or juices, what he found inside was a piece of perfectly roasted meat. Luffy's eyes went wide.
"...MEAT!"
He grabbed it. Took one bite. His entire body froze in bliss.
"THIS IS THE BEST ISLAND EVER!"
But as he devoured the fruit, the forest went silent. Leaves stopped falling. The ground beneath him slowly began to rise. Luffy blinked.
"Huh?"
The "hill" in front of him moved. Branches twisted. Leaves gathered together like swirling flames. From the forest floor, a massive creature began to rise. A giant made entirely of branches, roots, and autumn leaves. Its eyes glowed like embers.
It roared. Wind exploded outward. Leaves spiraled across the sky. Luffy grinned, still chewing.
"Oh cool." He stretched his arms. "A boss fight."
The roots burst upward. Leaves exploded into the air as the earth split open with a deep grinding sound. From the ground rose a massive arm made of interwoven branches.
It lifted slowly, shedding leaves like sparks from a fire. Then another arm followed. And another.
The forest canopy shook as the creature pulled itself free from the earth. Branches twisted together to form a towering body. Roots dragged behind it like ancient muscles tearing free from the soil. The creature's head formed last.
Hundreds of crimson and gold leaves swirled together, shaping a rough crown around a face made from hardened bark.
Two glowing embers burned where eyes should be. They locked onto Luffy.
The Island's Guardian had awakened. A violent spiral of leaves blasted outward from the creature's body, whipping through the clearing like a storm.
Luffy planted his feet against the gust.
"Woah!" He laughed. "Big guy!"
The guardian straightened to its full height. It towered above the trees, easily as tall as a small fortress.
Every movement caused branches to groan and leaves to scatter through the air like falling fire. For a moment, the two simply stared at each other.
The guardian tilted its head slightly. As if studying the strange rubber pirate who had interrupted the island's endless autumn. Then it roared.
The sound was not quite an animal roar. It was deeper. Like wind tearing through an ancient forest.
The guardian moved. A massive branch-arm swung downward. The air cracked as it cut through the clearing. Luffy jumped backwardss just before it slammed into the ground.
Leaves and dirt exploded upward. The impact carved a crater into the forest floor. Luffy landed on a tree branch nearby and grinned.
"Whoa!" His eyes sparkled with excitement. "You're strong!"
The guardian lifted its arm again. Branches twisted and extended, stretching outward like a giant whip. It struck again.
Luffy stretched his legs instantly.
"Gomu Gomu no-"
His body snapped backwards like a slingshot. The branch slammed through the tree where he had been standing. Wood shattered. Leaves burst outward. Luffy rocketed forwards through the air.
"-ROCKET!"
His fist stretched across the clearing and slammed into the guardian's chest.
WHAM.
The impact sent a shockwave through the creature's wooden body. Leaves exploded outward. But the guardian barely moved. Luffy bounced backwards and landed lightly on the ground. He blinked.
"Huh." He scratched his head. "That usually works better."
The guardian slowly looked down at the small pirate standing beneath it. Its glowing eyes flared brighter.
The forest responded. All around them, the trees began shaking. Thousands of leaves lifted into the air. They spun together, forming a swirling storm above the clearing.
Luffy looked up.
"...Woah."
The guardian raised both arms. The swirling leaves condensed into spinning blades of crimson and gold. With a single motion, the creature hurled them downward. A rain of razor-sharp leaves screamed through the air.
Luffy laughed.
"Cool!"
He stretched both arms wide.
"Gomu Gomu no..."
His arms spun rapidly in front of him.
"...GATLING!"
Dozens of punches blasted through the air. Each strike shattered waves of flying leaves.
The clearing filled with flashes of movement, rubber fists smashing through spinning blades of autumn.
Leaves burst apart like confetti. Still, the storm kept coming.
The guardian stepped forwards. Each step shook the ground.
It slammed its branch-arm down again. Luffy jumped aside, bouncing between trees with elastic ease. Branches shattered wherever the guardian struck. Luffy landed atop a high branch and grinned down at the giant.
"You're pretty fun!"
The guardian tilted its head again. Then it did something unexpected. Its body began to fall apart. Branches separated. Roots unraveled. Leaves lifted into the air in a massive spiral. For a moment, the creature seemed to dissolve into a storm.
Luffy blinked.
"Uh...?"
Then the storm crashed down around him. The leaves struck the ground and instantly reformed. Smaller creatures rose from the piles. Dozens of them. Humanoid shapes made from twisted branches and autumn leaves. Each one had glowing eyes like tiny embers.
Luffy's grin widened.
"More enemies!"
The leaf-creatures rushed him all at once. Branches swung like clubs. Luffy jumped straight into the middle of them.
"Gomu Gomu no..."
He twisted his body midair.
"...WHIP!"
His leg stretched across the clearing, smashing through five creatures at once. They burst apart into clouds of leaves. But new ones formed immediately. Luffy landed and spun again.
"Gomu Gomu no PISTOL!"
A stretched punch blasted through another group. Leaves scattered everywhere. The clearing became a battlefield of swirling autumn colors.
Still, the guardian itself was reforming behind them. The enormous body pulled back together, branches snapping into place, roots twisting into legs. Its glowing eyes burned brighter than before.
Luffy noticed.
"Oh." He cracked his knuckles. "You're the real one."
Far away, deeper in the autumn woods, the rest of the Straw Hat Pirates heard the distant explosions. Leaves shook loose from the trees with every echoing impact. Usopp froze.
"...That's Luffy."
Chopper looked terrified.
"IS HE FIGHTING SOMETHING ALREADY?!"
Zoro smirked slightly.
"Of course he is."
The crimson-cloaked swordsman standing before them closed his eyes briefly.
"You were warned."
Nami crossed her arms.
"What exactly did he wake up?"
The man looked towards the distant forest.
"The island's protector."
Another massive boom echoed through the woods. Leaves spiraled violently through the air. Robin watched the drifting storm with quiet curiosity.
"How fascinating."
The swordsman slowly drew his blade.
"If the guardian has awakened..." His gaze sharpened. "...then the forest will judge all of you."
Zoro's grin widened. He drew his swords.
"Good." Three blades flashed into position. "I was getting bored."
Back in the clearing, the guardian had fully reformed. Towering over the forest once again.
Luffy bounced lightly on his feet, surrounded by piles of defeated leaf-creatures.
"Okay," he said happily. "Round two."
The guardian raised both arms. The entire forest seemed to respond. Roots burst from the ground. Branches bent inward. Leaves swirled into a massive vortex above the clearing. The sky darkened with autumn colors.
Luffy stared up at the swirling storm. Then he laughed.
"THIS IS AWESOME!"
He stretched both arms behind him. His body snapped back like a giant rubber band.
"Gomu Gomu no-"
The guardian roared. The vortex descended.
Far in the distance, the sounds of battle echoed through the trees - booming impacts, splintering wood, and the occasional triumphant shout that could only belong to Luffy.
But in another part of the forest, a different battle was about to begin.
The wind carried a steady rain of crimson and gold leaves through the clearing where the rest of the Straw Hat Pirates stood.
Across from them, the crimson-cloaked swordsman slowly drew his blade. The steel slid from its sheath with a quiet, deliberate sound. The blade was long and slightly curved, its edge reflecting the red glow of the surrounding forest.
For a moment, no one moved. Leaves drifted lazily between them. Then Zoro stepped forwards.
"Well," he said, rolling his shoulders, "looks like you're the welcoming committee."
Behind him, Usopp whispered nervously to Chopper.
"Why does he always volunteer for these things first?"
Chopper whispered back.
"Because he likes fighting!"
"I KNOW!"
Nearby, Nami crossed her arms, clearly irritated.
"We just want our captain, and we'll leave. There's no reason to fight."
The swordsman didn't take his eyes off Zoro.
"You arrived as the forest's guardian awakened."
Another distant boom shook the trees. Leaves fell in a sudden wave.
"That captain of yours," the man continued calmly, "has already begun the trial."
Zoro smirked.
"Sounds like him."
The swordsman raised his blade.
"If the guardian falls... the island will accept you. But if it does not..." He took a step forwardss. The wind picked up. Leaves swirled around them like sparks. "...none of you will leave."
Zoro grinned. He slowly pulled one sword from his waist. Then another. Finally he lifted the Wado Ichimonji and clenched it between his teeth.
Three blades gleamed in the filtered sunlight. The swordsman's eyes narrowed slightly.
"Three swords."
Zoro shrugged.
"Gets the job done."
For a few seconds, neither moved. Only the wind and falling leaves filled the clearing.
Then-
Both men moved at once.
Their blades collided in the center of the clearing with explosive force. A shockwave blasted leaves outward in a perfect circle.
Usopp yelped and dove behind a tree.
"THEY MOVED BEFORE I COULD BLINK!"
Chopper's eyes were huge.
"They're so fast!"
Steel rang again. Zoro's three blades flashed like lightning, slashing in rapid arcs. The crimson swordsman blocked each strike with calm precision.
Their movements were so quick that the surrounding leaves were shredded midair. For a moment the clearing looked like a storm of falling confetti.
Zoro pushed forwards with a powerful strike.
The swordsman slid backwards across the leaf-covered ground but held his stance.
Their blades locked. Face to face.
Zoro grinned around the sword in his mouth.
"You're pretty good."
The stranger's expression didn't change.
"You as well."
Then he twisted his wrist. The force of the motion broke the lock instantly. His blade swept upward. A burst of compressed wind shot forwards. The air itself sliced through the clearing.
Zoro jumped backwards just as the attack cut through three trees behind him. The trunks split apart and crashed to the forest floor. Usopp screamed from behind his tree.
"HEY WATCH IT!"
Zoro's grin widened.
"Wind attacks, huh?"
The swordsman adjusted his stance.
"My blade carries the breath of this forest."
He swung again. Another crescent-shaped slash of air tore across the clearing.
Zoro stepped forwards this time instead of retreating. He spun his body.
"Three Sword Style-" All three blades flashed outward at once. "-Dragon Twister!"
A spiraling vortex of air erupted around him. Leaves lifted into a roaring column. The wind slash collided with Zoro's spinning attack. The two forces exploded into a storm of swirling leaves that blasted outward across the clearing. When the wind settled, both swordsmen were still standing. Zoro laughed.
"Now that's fun!"
The crimson swordsman studied him carefully.
"You wield your blades like a storm."
Zoro tilted his head.
"Yeah?"
The swordsman nodded slightly.
"But storms pass." He lifted his sword again. "The forest remains."
As if answering his words, the ground began to shift. Roots slowly emerged from beneath the leaves. Thick vines twisted across the forest floor.
Chopper gasped.
"The forest is moving!"
Robin watched calmly, hands folded behind her back.
"How interesting."
Branches bent inward towards the clearing. Leaves gathered into swirling currents around the swordsman. He raised his blade towards the sky. The wind intensified.
"This island has endured centuries," he said quietly. "It protects itself."
Zoro rolled his neck.
"Yeah?" He pointed a sword towards the man. "I protect my crew."
Another distant roar thundered through the forest, the unmistakable sound of Luffy's battle continuing somewhere far away. Zoro smirked.
"Besides..." His stance lowered. "...our captain's already wrecking your guardian."
That was the first time the swordsman's expression shifted. Only slightly. But enough. Zoro noticed.
"Thought so."
The swordsman moved again. This time he didn't charge straight forwards. He disappeared into the falling leaves. For a moment, the clearing looked empty.
Then-
CLANG!
Zoro blocked a strike from behind. The swordsman had appeared at his back without a sound. Zoro twisted and countered with two blades at once. The stranger ducked under the attack and swept low. Zoro jumped over the slash.
Their swords collided again and again in a blur of steel. Leaves shredded around them. The clearing filled with streaks of silver.
Then the swordsman suddenly stepped back. He lifted his blade horizontally. The wind gathered along its edge. Leaves spiraled tightly around the steel, forming a glowing crimson arc.
"Autumn Breath-" He swung. "-Falling Blade."
A massive wave of compressed air blasted forwards. The attack tore through the forest floor, sending leaves and dirt flying in a violent surge.
Zoro's eyes widened slightly. Then he grinned. He planted his feet.
"Three Sword Style..." All three blades aligned. "...Three Thousand Worlds!"
The two attacks collided. For a moment, the entire forest seemed to explode. Leaves filled the sky like a blazing storm. Trees bent violently in the shockwave.
Usopp clung to his tree branch, screaming. Chopper hid behind him.
"I CAN'T EVEN SEE THEM!"
The wind slowly faded. Leaves drifted gently back to the ground. In the center of the clearing, both swordsmen stood facing each other.
Neither had moved.
A thin cut ran across the crimson swordsman's cloak. And Zoro had a small scratch along his shoulder. Zoro spat the sword from his mouth briefly and rested it on his shoulder.
"Not bad."
The stranger lowered his blade slightly.
"You are strong."
Zoro slid the Wado Ichimonji back between his teeth.
"Yeah." He stepped forwards again. "But I'm not done."
Another distant explosion echoed through the forest. This one much louder. The ground shook. Robin glanced towards the sound with quiet interest.
"It seems the guardian's battle is escalating."
Zoro smirked.
"Good." He pointed one sword towards the crimson warrior. "Let's wrap this up before Luffy finishes the boss without us."
The wind picked up once more. Leaves lifted into the air. The two swordsmen lowered their stances. And beneath the endless falling autumn leaves, their duel resumed.
The forest had become a storm. Leaves no longer drifted gently through the air. Insteasd they spiraled violently across the clearing like burning embers caught in a hurricane. At the center of it all stood Luffy, grinning like a kid who had just discovered the world's biggest playground.
Towering above him was the island's protector. Its massive body loomed over the forest, branches twisting and grinding together like ancient machinery. Roots dragged behind it as thick as ship masts, tearing through the earth as it moved.
Every motion sent waves of leaves blasting through the air. Its glowing eyes locked onto Luffy. And then it attacked. A branch-arm as thick as a tower swung downward.
The air cracked. Luffy jumped sideways just as the strike obliterated the ground beneath him.
BOOOOM
The forest floor erupted in dirt and leaves. Luffy landed on a broken stump and laughed.
"Whoa! That one almost got me!"
The guardian didn't pause. Its other arm shot forwards like a spear. Branches extended outward, stretching across the clearing like a living whip.
Luffy bent backwards with rubber flexibility as the attack whipped past his face.
"Too slow!" He snapped upright and stretched his arm. "Gomu Gomu no-" His fist rocketed forwards. "-PISTOL!"
The punch slammed into the guardian's chest with a thunderous crack. Leaves exploded outward like a burst of fireworks. The massive creature staggered half a step.
Luffy blinked.
"...Hey! That worked!"
But the guardian's body shifted immediately. The cracked wood sealed itself as new branches twisted together. Leaves flowed across the damaged area and reformed its armor.
Luffy scratched his cheek.
"Aw." Then he grinned again. "Guess I'll just hit you harder."
The guardian raised both arms towards the sky. The forest answered. Trees shook violently. Leaves lifted from every branch across the surrounding hills.
Thousands.
Then tens of thousands.
They gathered above the battlefield like a crimson cloud.
Luffy looked up, impressed.
"Woah."
The guardian brought its arms down. The cloud collapsed. A tidal wave of spinning leaves crashed towards Luffy. Each one sliced through the air like a razor.
Luffy crossed his arms.
"Gomu Gomu no..." His body inflated slightly as he prepared. "...BALLOON!"
The storm slammed into him. Leaves ricocheted off his rubber body and scattered across the clearing.
When the storm passed, Luffy was still standing. Covered in leaves. He spat one out of his mouth.
"...Tastes like tree."
At that moment, the forest behind him exploded apart. Branches snapped. Leaves blasted outward. The rest of the Straw Hat Pirates burst into the clearing.
Nami immediately froze when she saw the towering guardian.
"...That's big."
Usopp screamed.
"WHY IS IT ALWAYS A GIANT MONSTER?!"
Beside him, Chopper stared in awe.
"It's amazing..." Then he remembered to panic. "IT'S TERRIFYING!"
Luffy waved happily.
"Oh hey guys!" A branch smashed into the ground beside him. "Little busy right now!"
From the side of the clearing, Zoro stepped forwards calmly. Behind him, the crimson swordsman watched silently. Zoro looked up at the massive creature.
"...So that's the boss."
Luffy pointed at it.
"YEAH! It keeps regenerating!"
Zoro cracked his neck.
"Good." He drew his swords. "I needed a warm-up after that other fight."
The guardian roared. Roots erupted from the ground and surged towards the crew like giant snakes.
Nami jumped back.
"Everyone spread out!" Lightning crackled from her Clima-Tact. "Thunderbolt Tempo!"
A bolt of lightning crashed into a cluster of roots, blasting them apart in a shower of burning leaves.
Usopp scrambled behind a fallen log.
"I'M PROVIDING SNIPER SUPPORT FROM A SAFE DISTANCE!" He fired a projectile from his slingshot. "Exploding Pinecone!"
The shot struck the guardian's arm.
BOOM
Leaves scattered everywhere.
Meanwhile, Chopper transformed.
"Monster Point!"
His massive form charged forwards and slammed into one of the guardian's legs. The impact shook the entire clearing.
Luffy laughed.
"Nice one, Chopper!"
Zoro stepped forwards slowly. Leaves swirled around his boots. The guardian lifted its massive arm and swung towards him. Zoro didn't move. At the last moment, he twisted his hand. His swords flashed.
"Three Sword Style..." The strike was almost invisible. "...Great Dragon Shock!"
A massive slash of compressed air tore upward through the guardian's arm. Branches exploded apart. The entire limb shattered into a storm of leaves and splintered wood. The guardian roared again, stumbling backwards.
Luffy's eyes lit up.
"Nice!"
But once again, the creature's body began to regenerate. New branches twisted together. Leaves flowed across the damaged area.
Zoro frowned slightly.
"Annoying."
The creature suddenly slammed both arms into the ground. The entire forest trembled. Roots erupted everywhere. Trees bent inward towards the battlefield. Leaves gathered into a massive spiral above the clearing.
Robin observed quietly from the edge of the fight.
"How fascinating." Her eyes followed the swirling storm. "The forest itself is part of the guardian."
Nami realized immediately.
"So it's pulling energy from the whole island?!"
The spiral above them grew larger. Darker. Denser. The sky turned crimson.
Luffy cracked his knuckles.
"Alright." His grin widened. "I guess it's time."
He bit into his thumb. Air rushed into his body. His muscles expanded. Steam rolled off his skin.
"Gear Four." The ground cracked beneath his feet. "Boundman!"
Luffy launched into the air like a cannonball. The guardian swung its arm upward to intercept him. But Luffy bounced off the attack midair.
"Gomu Gomu no-" He twisted his body. The air screamed around him. "-KONG GUN!"
His massive haki-coated fist slammed into the guardian's chest.
BOOOOOOM
The impact blasted leaves across the entire forest. The giant creature was launched backwards through several trees. The clearing erupted into chaos.
The guardian struggled to stand. Its body was cracked everywhere. Leaves were falling faster now. The forest itself seemed weaker.
Robin spoke calmly.
"The core is exposed."
Everyone looked. At the center of the guardian's chest was a glowing knot of roots and branches. The heart of the forest.
Luffy grinned.
"Got it!"
Zoro raised his swords.
"Let's finish this."
The guardian roared one last time. The remaining leaves of the forest lifted into the air like a blazing red storm.
At the center of it all stood the Guardian, its massive body cracked and splintered from the battle. Roots hung loose from its limbs. Entire sections of its bark armor had been blasted apart. Yet the creature still stood. Its glowing eyes burned brighter than ever.
Across the clearing, Luffy hovered in the air, steam rolling off his body in thick waves. His Gear Four form pulsed with power.
Below him, the rest of the crew gathered among the broken trees.
Leaves blew around them in a furious storm. In the center of the guardian's chest, the glowing knot of twisted roots pulsed with dim green light.
Everyone could see it now. That was the heart.
"THERE!" shouted Nami, pointing upward. "If we destroy that, the whole thing should collapse!"
The guardian roared as if it understood. The forest responded instantly. Roots burst from the ground around the crew. Massive branches swung downward like falling towers.
"SCATTER!" yelled Nami.
Usopp fired rapidly from behind a fallen tree.
"Exploding Pinecone! Exploding Pinecone!"
Small explosions blasted apart several incoming roots.
Nearby, Chopper, in his massive Monster Point form, grabbed a thick root and hurled it aside like a rope.
"Leave the big ones to me!"
Above them, Luffy grinned.
"Nice!"
But the guardian raised both arms again. Leaves swirled faster. The storm grew darker. The forest was gathering everything it had left.
At the edge of the battlefield, Zoro stepped forwards calmly. He watched the glowing core in the guardian's chest. The wind pushed his green hair back as leaves rushed past him in waves.
Behind him, the crimson-cloaked swordsman stood silently, observing the fight. Zoro lowered his stance. Three blades flashed into position. He inhaled slowly.
"Three Sword Style..."
The guardian swung its massive arm down towards the crew. Zoro moved. His body vanished in a blur.
"...Black Rope Dragon Twister!"
He spun forwards, creating a violent cyclone of slashing wind. Leaves lifted into a roaring vortex around him. The attack tore straight through the guardian's arm.
Branches shattered. The massive limb exploded apart into a storm of wood and leaves.
The guardian's chest was fully exposed. The glowing core was unprotected.
Zoro landed lightly on the ground. He tilted his head upward.
"LUFFY!"
High above the battlefield, Luffy was already moving. Steam poured off his body as he drew both fists back. His grin stretched wide.
"Got it!"
The guardian tried to protect its core. New branches began twisting across its chest. But it was too slow. Luffy rocketed downward through the storm of leaves.
"Gomu Gomu no-"
The air warped around his fist. The entire forest shook.
"-KING KONG GUN!"
His massive haki-coated fist crashed directly into the glowing core.
For a single moment, everything froze.
Then the forest exploded. A shockwave ripped through the island. Leaves blasted outward across the hills like a crimson tidal wave.
The guardian's chest shattered. The glowing core splintered into fragments of twisting roots and glowing bark. The enormous creature froze. Its glowing eyes flickered. Branches began falling away from its body.
One arm collapsed.
Then the other.
The giant form slowly crumbled apart, dissolving into a rain of leaves and broken wood. The storm above the clearing faded.
The wind died down. Leaves drifted gently back to the ground once more.
At the center of the clearing, Luffy landed lightly. His Gear Four form deflated with a loud pfffft. He stretched his arms.
"Woo!" Then he plopped down onto the leaf-covered ground. "I'm hungry."
Silence settled over the forest. The crimson-cloaked swordsman stepped forwards slowly. He looked around at the fallen remains of the guardian.
Leaves covered the clearing like fresh snowfall. For the first time, the man smiled faintly.
"The trial is complete."
Nami crossed her arms.
"Trial?"
The swordsman nodded.
"For centuries, this island has been protected by the Guardian." He gestured towards the drifting leaves. "It awakens only when outsiders disturb the forest."
Robin listened with quiet interest.
"So defeating it means..."
The man finished the thought.
"The forest has accepted you."
Zoro sheathed his swords.
"Tch." He glanced towards Luffy, who was lying on his back in the leaves. "Good thing our captain likes punching giant monsters."
The swordsman chuckled softly.
"Indeed."
That evening, the crew returned to the shore where the Thousand Sunny waited quietly in the golden light of sunset.
The island had grown peaceful again. Leaves drifted gently across the beach.
A massive feast covered the Sunny's deck. Roasted autumn fruits. Wild mushrooms. Grilled fish from the nearby shore. Even the strange "meat fruits" Luffy had discovered earlier.
Sanji lit a cigarette proudly.
"A feast worthy of heroes."
Luffy had already devoured half the table.
"THIS IS THE BEST ISLAND EVER!"
Usopp leaned back happily with a full stomach.
"I almost died today..."
Chopper raised a mug.
"But it was amazing!"
Nami relaxed in her chair, watching the sunset glow across the autumn forest.
"It really is beautiful."
Beside her, Robin smiled softly.
"In some places, autumn represents endings."
She looked towards the drifting leaves.
"But here it feels more like a pause between adventures."
The next morning, the sails of the Thousand Sunny filled with wind. The Straw Hats waved goodbye to the island as it slowly faded into the distance. The forests still glowed with endless red and gold. Leaves drifted out across the sea like tiny boats. At the bow, Luffy leaned forwards excitedly.
"Next island!"
Behind him, Zoro groaned.
"Give it ten minutes before he punches another guardian."
Nami sighed. Usopp panicked. Chopper laughed. And the Straw Hat Pirates sailed onward over the Grand Line, leaving the Island of Eternal Autumn behind them as the last leaves of the season drifted across the ocean.
