Drunken (Murder) Confessions

Summary:

While at a Human Village bar, a drunk and sleepy Mokou starts murmuring apologies for "killing you", and Kaguya has to figure out what to do before anyone else overhears.

I had to google what the phrase meant - first time I'm dealing with this trope. I think by "drunken confession" it usually means confessions of love, but I decided to take a different route with this. Still, this can be seen as either platonic or romantic TeruMoko.

Work Text:

"I'm sorry... so sorry..."

At first, Kaguya almost missed the murmurings - almost thought she was imagining things.

"So sorry... for killing you..."

She turned her head towards Mokou, sitting on the stool next to her and leaning her body against the bar. Her arms were spread across the surface, her head balanced between them. Her head was also laying on its side, her face pointed towards Kaguya.

Mokou's eyes looked mostly closed, so Kaguya couldn't be sure if she was sleep-talking or if the drinks had made her emotional.

Kaguya glanced at the bartender, who was fortunately too pre-occupied with other customers to have heard anything. Similarly, the others around them were more focused on their conversations to have caught such a tiny, yet confounding confession.

Gensokyo may have been full of tons of strange people, but the Human Village was meant to be a safe haven for the small human population. Even though Kaguya and Mokou weren't youkai, saying such things might put the humans off-guard.

So Kaguya leaned in real close and replied softly, "It's okay, Mokou. I never took it personally."

Mokou's mouth pursed. "But... your mission..."

Pausing, Kaguya tilted her head and tried to recall a time where she used such a phrase. She'd plotted and schemed before, but mainly was just taken by flights of fancy. The only people she could think of who would call something a mission were the rabbits and Eirin - who Mokou avoided harming - and the other Lunarians - who Mokou should've never made contact with.

"I ruined your mission... all for dumb immortality... I'm so sorry, Iwakasa... you didn't deserve that..."

Kaguya blinked. Logically, she knew Mokou had to have gotten her hands on the Hourai Elixir somehow, but she never really thought too deeply about it. She'd left it as a gift for the emperor, so she knew it existed somewhere in the world. It wasn't impossible that people had managed to swindle it from him and pass it around. It wasn't impossible that the emperor, or any of his successors, had shared it with others.

Now that she was thinking it through, she realized she never really heard Mokou talk about her past much. She could tell from her clan name "Fujiwara" that she might've been related to one of the men she humiliated - that this might have been part of the reason Mokou fought her. Yet Mokou herself never brought it up. She brought little up at all, even after they started hanging around each other without slipping into fatal battles.

Carefully, Kaguya patted Mokou on the head - gentle enough that it wouldn't wake her, but enough that she could feel it in her dreams.

"It's alright, Mokou," Kaguya purred. "I understand. A lesser person wouldn't feel guilty. So don't be too hard on yourself over it."

Hopefully that was something this "Iwakasa" would say, if at least to keep Mokou from realizing it was just a dream. Based on how Mokou relaxed afterward, without stirring awake and questioning Kaguya, it was at least enough to bring her peace.

Notes:

I actually don't know how much Kaguya knows about what went down after she "left for the moon": what happened to the elixir and Mokou's backstory. For this ficlet, I decided to assume that Kaguya would be apathetic enough not to check and for Mokou to still be withdrawn regarding her past.

Similarly, I wasn't sure if the Human Village people are aware that Kaguya and Mokou are more than just humans, and I decided to assume they'd hide that fact on the basis that regular humans in Gensokyo would be suspicious of anything abnormal. This is set in the Human Village due to one of the manga having a throwaway moment of revealing the two sometimes chill together in the Human Village.
