Chapter Text
"Thousands of years ago, Humans and Mermaids were mortal enemies. Humans would hunt mermaids for sport, wanting to take them to show off their wealth. As time passed, less mermaids were seen and hunted, soon integrating into society. Due to the inhuman abilities mermaids held, they were often seen in the military, in special task forces that revolve around the ocean, their territory."
Y/n POV
It was a sunny day, clouds barely spotted in the sky. I was standing in the Cafe my friend worked at, leaned against the counter as they cleaned up. Spacing out, Liliana snapped me back to reality when they decided to ask a question.
"Sooo Y/n, are you still working at the Orphanage or have you found a better job?" Liliana asks as they wipe down the counter top for the Cafe.
"Why? I like the place," I answered in response, shrugging.
"Well yeah, you made that clear, I'm just saying, you can get a better job, you have the qualifications," Liliana counters, poking my arm, which I flinched away from, "Or are you so sure your old friends are gonna come back?"
I paused when Liliana mentioned my old friends, I still missed them. They disappeared after the only one close to my age graduated. They haven't texted me back but...it was fine. "I don't know what you're talking about, Li..." I answered, looking away from them.
"I don't mean anything wrong about it, it's just growing a bit concerning. They left, Y/n. They probably forgot about you," Liliana stated, resting their hand on my shoulder.
"You don't know them...you don't know that, Li..." I insisted, pushing their hand off of me.
"Y/n-" Liliana tried to say before I cut her off.
"No. I'm not going to hear you out, Liliana. I had been friends with them since Gary and I were 14. They wouldn't have forgotten about me that easily," I stated sternly, annoyed about the insinuation that they didn't care enough to remember me.
"...right..." Liliana muttered, going back to wiping the table top.
"...I'm...sorry, I shouldn't have snapped at you like that, that was completely uncalled for on my end..." I muttered, pushing off the counter and leaving the Cafe. Liliana didn't call out for me, knowing I needed some space.
The walk to the apartment building felt longer than normal, my thoughts scattered. I fidgeted with my necklace, the one mom and dad gave me, they said it would protect me and to not take it off when I'm near bodies of water. I felt so shitty for snapping at Li, they were just trying to help.... My thoughts keep circling back to the day the others suddenly left. I knew John, Simon, Johnny and Kyle all were already in the military and worked together, but Gary? He joined them when he graduated. It...hurt when they all left but I understood they had a job to do.
7 years before.... (Third Person)
"...You're...joining the military with the others?" Y/n asked, their gaze holding a glimpse of curiosity.
"Yeah, I am...Price is trying to pull some strings so after bootcamp I'd be in his Task Force, though Laswell is not having it, for now," Gary answered, nodding to the simple question.
"...Huh...Will you stay in contact with me though?" Y/n asked, their gaze lowering as they fidgeted with the aquamarine necklace that rested around their neck.
Gary noticed their nervous demeanor, feeling terrible about what was going on. But he promised to Price that he wouldn't bring up the fact they were merfolk. They couldn't. He shook his head, remorse clear in his eyes, "I'm sorry Bug, I won't be able to keep in contact, but you can text me everyday. Just to tell me what happened that day."
Y/n nodded, upset that he wouldn't be able to talk to Gary anymore, but understood why, "Alright..."
Gary sighed, taking out a pearl bracelet with a small shell attached. He grabbed their wrist, placing the bracelet in their palm. "...Here. To remember me and the others and I promise, I won't forget about you, none of us will."
Y/n was taken aback by the sudden action, but after processing it, a small smile spread across their lips, looking up at Gary, slipping the bracelet on. "Thank you..." Y/n muttered.
"Of course, Bug," Gary answered, smiling softly, before Johnny came up behind Gary, grabbing his shoulder.
"Come on, Gary, or we are gonna leave you behind," Johnny joked, patting Gary's shoulder, before looking at Y/n, "See ya later, squirt. Try not to miss us too much~" Johnny teased, ruffling Y/n's hair.
"Hey-! Ugh...yeah yeah Johnny, I'll try," Y/n muttered, swatting Johnny's hand away like it was an annoying fly.
The others followed behind, saying their goodbyes before departing. Y/n waved bye to all of them, their hands fidgeting with the bracelet.
Present time... (Y/n pov)
The memory swiftly ended when I ran into someone, losing my footing before catching myself. Glancing up a tad bit, I was met with someone in military gear. Panic shooting down my spine.
"I am so sorry sir- I didn't see you there-" I exclaimed, stumbling over my words.
The soldier said nothing, remaining eerily silent. As I took a deep breath, I looked up fully, just to be met with a dude with a skull mask. I instinctively took a step back. I could only see the man's eyes, which were almost impossible to read. It kinda reminded me of Simon- no. Not now.
"Uhm- Ima just...I'm just gonna go...." I muttered, hurrying away from that awkward situation.
I felt his gaze still on me, familiar but unfamiliar at the same time. Eerie as hell though.... After two more blocks, I finally made it to my apartment complex. As I entered my apartment and took off my hoodie, something fell to the ground. Glancing down, a slip of paper, folded neatly, was now on the floor. Kneeling to pick it up and unfolding it, it was a letter, the first few words reading:
"To Y/n L/N, You have been accepted to go to a Military training camp."

Ghost POV
I watched the person walk until they were out of sight, my hand reaching towards my comms.
"Found them, Price. Gave them the letter."
"Great job, Ghost. Start heading back to base." Price's response rang through my comms, "Was anything different about them, Ghost?"
"Yes sir," I responded, my gaze flicking back to where they walked off, before turning and heading back to where Soap and Gaz were waiting, "They're eyes were different. It was one of a Siren."
Price was silent for a moment, before speaking up once more.
"What."
