What Would It Take?

Summary:

"What would it take, Seungcheol?" He finally asks, after seven years, he finally asks the question that's been brewing in his head, "For you to finally choose us? This family? What would it take?"

Seungcheol remained quiet, staring at Jeonghan's tear stricken face without an ounce of remorse from the pain he's caused all these years.

Jeonghan's sobs start echoing the walls, because he knew, he's always known the answer, he just never wanted to believe it was true.

Chapter 1: Our Goodbye

Chapter Text

6:48 AM, Ninoy Aquino International Airport — Present.

Jeonghan sits on the cold airport bench with his daughter laying her head on top of his lap as he overlooks the city one last time.

His eyes brimming with his tears, silently crying for the home that he's leaving, his family, his husband.

If he can even refer to Seungcheol as that.

It wasn't a decision he made in a day.

It's not a decision he wanted to choose.

He softly stroked his daughter's hair, she grew into such a beautiful young girl—kind, compassionate, and understanding.

Seven years, he'd been hiding her, ashamed of her. Jeonghan's heart breaks every time he sees the saddened expression her daughter would make.

Seven years is too much, too many chances that he could've have taken to be better—to do better, and yet

It was time Jeonghan lost all hope in his husband.

For the sake of his daughter.

"All passengers traveling on Flight 1004 to Sydney, Australia are now boarding at Gate 13."

Jeonghan startles at the announcement, finally pulled from his thoughts.

He gently shook his daughter's shoulders, "Baby wake up na," Jeonghan softly calls out his daughter, "aalis na po tayo."

Groggily, his daughter she sits up, arms locked around the stuffed teddy bear Seungcheol got for her last Christmas. She had fully sat up but her eyes were still closed.

Jeonghan smiled warmly, placed a soft kiss on her forehead and guided her to stand.

As they were walking toward the aircraft, he felt his daughter slightly tug his hand, making them stop in their tracks. He turned to look at her, "What is it love?"

"Susunod po ba si dada?" Jangmi asked innocently.

He froze, of course he should have expected it, children are naturally curious after all.

"Tayo lang muna, love." he explains, hindi niya muna sinagot ng diretsahan ang tanong ng anak. She knew they were moving to Australia, but she didn't know na hindi na kasama ang Dada niya.

Despite every heartbreak Jangmi has experienced from his father, she still holds a lot of love for him. She thinks that one day his Dada wouldn't drop her hand and hide her behind a wall when someone recognized him in public, that one day when she'd hear him talk about how proud he was of her daughter when she watches one of his interviews, and that one day he would love her more than he loves his career, his fame.

It's been seven years, how much longer should Jangmi wait?

She will no longer have to now. It would never have happened anyways.

"Oh," she bowed her head down, slightly frowning.

It was an expression she always wore when she Seungcheol would cancel any plans with her, which means Jeonghan knew it all too well.

He was about to speak again, maybe explain the situation better but she looked up at him again with a wide smile—her dimples showing, "It's okay, we can surprise him with gifts before siya dumating!"

Pouring out so much love for her father even when he didn't deserve it. Jeonghan's chest tightens.

He smiled back, he would have to explain later that she was never going to see her father again, but for now, "Of course baby, we can pick them out when we land, okay?"

It'll only be the two of us from now on, Jangmi. But I wish it didn't have to be… I wish he was better to you. I'm sorry for putting you through that, I promise I'll be better for you too.

3:15 PM, St. Luke's Hospital — Two days ago

"Hi Jeonghan, I'm sorry for calling you from the hospital, may nangyari kasi kay Jangmi And I couldn't contact Cheol."

Jeonghan's stomach dropped. The both of them were supposed to be together right now, Seungcheol was supposed to bring Jangmi to the mall, but—

He felt like bile is threatening to spill out of his throat but Jeonghan managed to speak, "B-Bakit anong nangyari sakanila? Na aksidente ba? O-okay lang ba si Mimi? Saang ospital kayo? Pupuntahan ko kayo—"

"Wait, no sorry." Pagpuputol ni Minghao sa panic ni Jeonghan, "She's here with me sa mall, I picked her up from the help desk. Sila 'yung tumawag sa'kin."

Jeonghan thought he can finally breathe again, "Oh, thank God."

"But ah," He paused for a few seconds, collecting his words, "She hasn't told me what happened, pero ang nakwento sa'kin nung guard na nakahanap daw sakaniya ay nahiwalay daw siya sa'kin, so…"

Minghao didn't need to continue, he already knew, he had a feeling of what could have happened—its already happened before.

But not like this.

Jeonghan took a deep breathe, his grip on the telephone is tight, "Can I talk to her muna? Mabilis lang I have to get back na din."

"Sure." He heard some shuffling around and then—

"Papa?" he heard his daughter's soft voice speak. Jeonghan can already tell she was upset, since there was a slight tremble in her voice as well.

"Hi baby," he calmly greeted his daughter. He was anything but calm, but he has to for the sake of his daughter. "Pwede mo po ba sabihin kay Papa ano nangyari? Saan po si Dada?"

She didn't answer, he could only hear her soft breathing.

Jeonghan sighed, she wasn't going to answer when she knows he was going to get mad at Seungcheol. She didn't like to hear them fighting. "Do you want to talk about it pag-uwi ko nalang po?" He tried again. He wants to know what happened—why wasn't Seungcheol with her? Why did he just up and abandon her in a public space. Jeonghan can feel the anger rising in his chest.

"Don't get mad…" She said her voice fully trembling now.

Jeonghan's heart hurts for his daughter, she shouldn't have to deal with this, she shouldn't have to feel abandoned and she surely should not be protecting the person that is hurting her, no matter how much she loves him.

"I'm not mad okay?" He continued, he wanted to cry, he wanted to tell her that he should be mad—that she should be mad, but he relents, "Just… let's talk about it po pag-uwi ko? I'll come home early today."

"Don't fight with Dada…" She silently pleaded with him.

Jeonghan can feel his eyes brimming with tears—lagi nalang, hindi na naubusan ng luha.

He cleared his throat and answered, "I won't, I promise. As long as you tell me the truth later, okay?"

"…Okay po." She sounded convinced, he trusts her papa.

"Can you give the phone back to tito Hao? I need to talk to him."

Once the phone is back to Minghao's hands he said, "I'm guessing tutuloy mo plano mo?"

No sugarcoat, straight to the point. He'd been planning it for a while, he'd been praying na magbabago pa isip niya, na makikita niya pa ulit 'yung lalaking minahal niya, inalagaan siya at ng anak nila sa asawa niya ngayon—but not even a trace of him he can find. Maybe the man he loved had been consumed by the fires of fame, leaving his family burned and brusied in the wake.

He sighs before answering, "Matagal naman na 'ko desidido, Minghao."

"Hmm. That's good, you both deserve better."

Jeonghan bit his lip, why did it take him seven years to realize it? He could only let out a hum as a response.

"I'm here if you guys need anything, okay?"

He smiles, grateful for the love and support that he has from his friends, "Thank you, Hao. I appreciate it."

One last chance, Seungcheol. Please, for one last time, don't disappoint me.

10:51 PM, Yoon-Choi Residence

It's been hours. Not a single message or call from Seungcheol.

He's been restless ever since he came home with his daughter, the story she told him had put him in that state—slowly simmering with anger towards his husband.

"May nakakita na fans po sakaniya… so he told me to wait behind a wall… but then he started walking away and…"

"He didn't come back for you?"

"No… Uhm, so lumapit po ako sa guard… and asked if i could call someone 'cause I was lost…"

"And you called tito Hao?"

"Yes po, since I know I can't call Dada… and tito Hao lives nearby…"

After he had comforted his daughter, he messaged Seungcheol, wondering if he'd come clean about the situation. But he never did he recieve a reply from his husband.

Seungcheol was supposed to take a day off, Jeonghan had asked—begged him to, really. He'd failed to show up to their daughter's family day event at her school. Claiming that something came up. It ticked Jeonghan off so bad that after Seungcheol went home it exploded into an argument. Again.

So they had an agreement, for missing out another special event in their daughter's lives, he would take her out to the mall and spend some time with her alone, to make up for it. But Jeonghan will take what he can get—what his husband is willing to give.

And he shouldn't have had to settle for that.

Kung ganito lang din pala ang mangyayari sana siya nalang ang nag comfort sa anak nila dahil wala 'yung isa niyang tatay sa family day event—like it was his fault.

But maybe it was, Jeonghan married him, hindi ba?

He bitterly laughed to himself as he paces around the living room, waiting for his oh-so-dedicated husband.

Just when he was going to try and call Seungcheol again, he suddenly heard the sound of the tires screeching the pavement.

He's home.

Jeonghan tries to remain calm but as soon as the door to the living room opened—

"Bakit ngayon ka lang?" Jeonghan bitterly greeted, couldn't really hold his anger anymore, "Nakauwi na si Jangmi pero ikaw nasa labas pa?"

Seungcheol's jaw clenched, hand still at holding the knob at the door, "Hindi mo man lang ba ako hihintayin makapasok?"

"Sagutin mo 'yung tanong."

The older man sighed, he closed the door and walk slightly toward the living room—closer to Jeonghan. "I had something important come up—"

"Don't bullshit me!" Jeonghan angrily spat, "I called your manager, wala naman kayong schedule pero dumiretso ka sa studio. What were you avoiding?"

Seungcheol's shoulder tensed, "Wala…" he answered, sounding unsure, "It's just… some unfinished work—"

"Cut the bullshit. You lost our daughter, tapos di ka manlang magmemessage sakin? 'Di mo papala sasabihin sakin na nawala mo anak natin? Ganon? Malalaman ko nalang ba sa news? Ha?"

Seungcheol remained silent for a while, contemplating his answer, or coming up with a better excuse. "I don't know what you're talking about."

Jeonghan scoffed, amazed by his husband's audacity. "'Wag ka mag maang-maangan! You put our daughter at risk and you're going to lie about it? How fucking dare you!"

His husband moved closer now, rubbing at Jeonghan's shoulders—a pathetic attempt to calm the other down, "Look, I don't know what Jangmi told you, but there were some fans that recognized me—"

He shrugged the hands off his shoulders, "I don't care about your stupid fans! I want you to care about your daughter! Iniwan mo lang siya sa loob ng mall? Nasiraan ka na ba sa ulo, Seungcheol?"

"She's old enough to know when she's lost—"

"She's seven. She's a child. did you even think it through nung iniwan mo siya ng biglaan, ha? At anong lost? Tanga ka ba? You intentionally left her in the fucking mall! Isipin ba yan ng mabuting ama?"

"Jeonghan you don't understand, they weren't leaving me alone! I had to try and to get them away from me, for Jangmi's sake!"

"But you didn't come back for her!" Jeonghan slammed the older's chest in frustration, tears falling from his eyes, "Mas importante ba talaga 'yang imahe mo kaysa sa anak mo? Mas importante ba 'yang putanginang career mo kaysa sa pamilyang 'to? Kaysa sa anak mo?"

"Do you think I had a fucking choice?" Seungcheol started shouting now, matching Jeonghan's anger, "You know what this career demands of me, you know what those fans can do if they find out that I have a husband and a child? Pwede nila akong siraan, pwede ka nilang siraan, all I'm trying to do is protect the both of you!"

"Protect us or protect yourself? You put your daughter in danger! She could have actually gotten lost or worst, kidnapped. How is that protecting us, how is that protecting your daughter?"

"But nothing bad happened to her!" Seungcheol defends himself, reasoning with his husband, "I watched her approach a guard at a safe distance, she's home isn't she?"

"Hind naman porket nakauwi siya ng buo ay okay na yung ginawa mo!"

"Hindi ko naman hahayaang may masamang mangyari sakaniya! How awful of a father do you think I am?"

"What else am I supposed to think? You care so much about your precious image na hindi mo na nga kami sinasamahan kapag lalabas kaming dalawa! The first time I left you alone with her, eto nangyari! You didn't even call or text or anything, nalaman ko pa kay Minghao. Your daughter wanted to spend time with you today, and this is what you do to her?"

"You think I wanted that to happen? You fucking begged me to take her kahit ilang beses ko na sinabi na it's not safe for me to go with her!"

"Seungcheol, this was supposed to be your way of making up to your daughter!" She's was trying so hard not to cry in front of me! Hindi ka ba naaawa?"

"Hindi ko naman to ginusto e! Do you think I wanted to have a kid so early into my career? The career I've always dreamed of?"

"Pero meron ka nang anak, dapat mas priyoridad mo siya!"

"Jeonghan, I've worked my ass off for this band—to get us where we are now, I can't just give that up!"

"For the expense of your daughter? Pitong taon na Seungcheol, baka pwedeng kami naman piliin mo?"

"You know I cant do that! The management expects too much of me and the fans—"

"Paano kami? are we pushed to the side again? For another seven years? or more, huh? When will you have time for us? When will it be our turn?"

He doesn't answer. He doesn't want to answer because he's still too busy reaching for the top when he's already at his peak. Leaving his family at the ground, waiting for him to come down.

He turns, walking away from Jeonghan, from his problems—like always, "I think we should both cool off, this argument isn't going anywhere—"

"Get some sleep," He finally said, turning toward the door with the keys hand again, "I'll be back tomorrow. Pakalma muna tayo parehas."

As soon as the door shuts, Jeonghan collapsed onto the floor, he lets himself grieve now. Grieve his family, grieve for his daughter, and grieve for the man he once loved.

10:03 AM, Yoon-Choi Residence — Yesterday.

When Jeonghan woke up, the space next to him was cold—as it had been for… he doesn't really remember.

Seungcheol would get up early to go to the studio, leaving Jeonghan in an empty bed every morning.

He sighed, turning his head to the bedside drawer, reaching for his phone. When he unlocked the phone, new messages from Seungcheol was at the top of his notifications.

hubby 🌟

8:28 AM

Jeonghan.

I'll stay at the studio for now, bukas nalang ako babalik.

I don't want Jangmi to see us fighting.

As for yesterday, I left her a note and a small gift, please make sure to give it to her.

9:53 AM

I love you, Hon.

I'm sorry about last night.

"Hindi ka pa ba napapagod kaka-sorry…" He lowly mutters to himself.

Kasi ako pagod na.

He stared blankly at his ceiling, mentally exhausted.

Pagod na siya makipaglaban. Pagod na siya ilaban ang pamilya niya. Ang tagal-tagal na niyang nagtitiis.

His mind drifted off to the migration papers that he'd been hiding from Seungcheol.

Matagal na niya pinlano, but he still wanted to give Seungcheol a chance. One last chance to prove himself that he does care for their daughter, for his family.

But Seungcheol did the unthinkable. Jeonghan was prepared to be disappointed, but with what his husband did, he was furious.

Ilalayo na niya si Jangmi.

But he didn't know how Jangmi will feel about it. She loves his other father, but deep down inside, Jeonghan knows she's hurting too.

Jeonghan finally gets up, moving toward the bathroom door to freshen up before waking up his daughter.

He still has to deal with the aftermath of yesterday's events. Jangmi was still upset, she wouldn't speak to Jeonghan, only kept to her room the entire day.

He decided it would be best to let her have her space before confronting her about it.

⌛︎

Jangmi's still quiet.

She'd greeted Jeonghan earlier when she woke up but still hadn't spoken a word since they came down to the dining table.

He stared at his daughter whose sitting across him, silently eating with a sullen look in her face. Jeonghan knows she's still upset, she always is when Seungcheol cancelled plans but she would always bounce back after he'd apologize.

Maybe Jangmi's gotten tired of the repeating cycle of his father's behavior.

Like him.

After they'd finish eating, Jeonghan decided he should open up the topic of yesterday's events. Starting with the small gift Seungcheol left for Jangmi.

"Jangmi," Jeonghan called out, fiddling with the small paper bag he found by the kitchen counter, "Dada has something to give you."

Jangmi stared for a while at the bag her father was holding before reluctantly reaching for it over the dining table. When she opened the bag, there was a small note folded neatly in half.

But she didn't open it.

Instead she looked up at her father and asked, "Hindi po ba uuwi si Dada?"

Jeonghan falters, how many times will he have to make excuses for his husband? "I'm sorry love but he said bukas pa daw siya makakauwi, he said he was really busy."

She looked back at the note in her hand, and placed it back inside the bag, setting it aside, "Okay." She simply said.

"Jangmi, can you be honest with me?" He wanted to know what his daughter was thinking, what she was feeling. So that he knows that what's he's planning to do is the right choice.

"Yes po." She answered quietly.

"How did it make you feel when Dada left you? At the mall?"

She didn't answer. Instead she looked down at her plate and started picking at the remnants of her food.

"I won't get mad at him," Jeonghan tries again, "I just… I need your honesty."

She looked back up at him again, eyes glistening with tears. Jeonghan's heart hurts for his daughter. "I was scared po…" She said in a small trembling voice, "We've been through the mall before, so kaya ko naman po siguro kahit mawala ako but… I didn't like how he left me."

Jangmi bit at her lower lip, trying to fight the tears from falling from her eyes, "I waited for a while… a-akala ko babalik pa si Dada…" She couldn't contain her emotions anymore and the tears started to fall.

Jeonghan rushed to his daughter's side, embracing her softly as he comforted her, "Jangmi, Dada hurt you, and it's okay if you're angry. It's okay if you don't accept whatever consolation gift your dad gives you. I want you to know that your feelings are valid, okay love?"

Jangmi pulled back slightly from the embrace—Jeonghan wiped away the constant tears that keeps on falling from her eyes, "Bakit hindi siya mag-s-sorry… in person? I don't want to accept his gift, Papa."

Jeonghan feels like he's about to cry as well, mirroring his daughter's eyes, "Oh my sweet girl, I'm sorry. I'll make it up—"

"No!" The sudden burst of emotions startled Jeonghan, this was the first time he'd seen her resentful at Seungcheol, "I want him! Ikaw nalang palagi Papa, when will it be his turn to say sorry…" She burrowed her face into Jeonghan's chest, her sobs muffled but not stopping.

He couldn't stop the tears falling, Jeonghan knows that this had been years of built up frustration, all overflowing right now. "I'm sorry love, but I don't have an answer for that…"

She asked through her tears, "Is Dada bad, Papa?"

But is Seungcheol a bad father?

He wasn't before, Jeonghan knew that. He thinks Jangmi knows that as well.

She'd lost his father to fame.

Jeonghan would answer yes, he is a bad father. But he still wanted her daughter to cling onto the memories of when he was good, and still have a good image of who her father once was.

"No love," Jeonghan finally answered, stroking his daughter's hair softly, "He just has… other priorities."

Jangmi has quiet down, only the sound of her sniffling remains. She doesn't reply to Jeonghan's answer, only staying put in her father's embrace.

"Jangmi," Jeonghan starts, his pulse quicken, nervous of his daughter's reation, "I have… to tell you something."

His daughter looked up at him with her red rimmed eyes—Jeonghan knows he's making the right decision. "We're moving to Australia—I know its sudden but, believe me its for the best. I won't let Dada hurt you again, okay?"

Jangmi hadn't fully understood what Jeonghan meant, it was a quick explanation, and Jangmi just didn't want to feel hurt and resentful towards one of his fathers again. "When po tayo aalis?"

"Bukas na po, kaya help me pack okay?"

She nodded, wiping at her face. "Okay po."

We'll be okay soon Jangmi, I owe you that much.

11:58 PM, Yoon-Choi Residence — Present.

Seungcheol came home when he knew his husband and daughter would most likely be asleep.

He still hadn't patched things up with Jeonghan from their argument the other night. And he still hadn't talked to his daughter for his foolish behavior at the mall.

Jeonghan was right, he just didn't like to admit it.

So he'd been avoiding the two of them. Staying cooped up in the studio, practicing choreography, writing lyrics—whatever he can think of just to avoid having to go home early.

He knew his mistakes, balak naman niya ayusin 'yun, pero ayaw niya din kasi na magaway sila ng asawa niya. Their daughter doesn't like hearing them fight, he remembers her crying so much it took a few hours for her to calm down. She was so distraught at seeing her two parents fight, he didn't want her to see something like that again.

But avoiding his problems won't make them go away, he knows that. Seungcheol feels utterly defeatd, he doesn't know how he was supposed to fix things with his family

Bukas talaga, I'll talk to both of them.

He doesn't even have a plan, he's just hoping that both his husband and daughter will hear him out.

Seungcheol quietly walks up to his daughter's bedroom to kiss her goodnight. Jangmi doesn't know that he does this, but he still does it anyway. He does it because he rarely gets to properly tell her goodnight, and he's often already at work before she wakes up.

Seungcheol knows he hadn't been giving their daughter any love and affection for the past few months, and he knows it's worse that he's only doing it when she's asleep.

He just doesn't have any time, is what he always reasons.

Too busy preparing for their group's new album, their group's new tour—he barely even has time for himself.

After the album drops, after the tour, he'll make it up to his family, ten times as much.

Seungcheol slowly opens the door, Jangmi wasn't there and the room looked liked no one ever lived in it. Jangmi's toy's are off the dresser—her stuff toys aren't even on her bed. Her pillows, her books, her picture frames—all gone.

He rushes to the other room, to Jeonghan and his' bedroom. He pulls open the door—Jeonghan isn't there.

His pulse quickens.

Seungcheol pulls out his phone to message Jeonghan.

hon 💐

He tries calling Jeonghan, but he doesn't answer. Seungcheol looked at the time on his phone, 12:01 AM. They shouldn't be out this late.

And with all of Jangmi's things gone? Had something happen? He messages again.

12:01 AM

Hon?

It's midnight na, where are you guys?

hon 💐 missed a call

Jeonghan I'm getting worried

Please answer

hon 💐 missed a call

hon 💐 missed a call

Jeonghan where are you

Please

Seungcheol paces around their bedroom, phone in hand, still desperately calling Jeonghan. But to no avail.

He doesn't understand what's happening—why it's happening.

Frustrated, he throws his phone onto the bed. Where he failed to see two pieces of paper with a golden ring sitting on top of it.

He walks closer, picking everything up. The ring—it's Jeonghan's wedding ring. He had left it? He turns to one of the papers and it reads divorce agreement.

Seuncheol's heart drop.

Is that the reason why the ring is here? Why Jangmi's things are gone?

He's breathing heavily now, tears starting to fall from his eyes.

He looks to the other paper for answers and it was a letter addressed to him, written in Jeonghan's hand.

Seungcheol,

We left earlier this morning, don't bother looking for us kasi hindi mo kami mahahanap. I made sure of that. This is for the better, for your career, and for our daughter. Matagal-tagal ko na din 'to iniisip, but our daughter loves you too much kaya nagtiis pa kami ng ilang taon, akala ko kaya pa.I should have acted sooner to save our daughter from the heartbreak. Hindi ko na kayang makita siyang laging malungkot, laging naghihintay sa'yo, expecting that you'll come around, so I had to make a tough decision.

You weren't like this before, do you remember? But your career started skyrocketing… Of course I was happy for you, pangarap mo 'yun diba? But you started spending time with us less and less, canceling plans and you even missed her birthday.

You never wanted this life, right? So here you go, I'm giving you back your freedom. I hope you use it well.

Mahal ka namin, Dada. We wish you all the best things in life. This is our goodbye.

With love,

Jeonghan
