Chapter 1: The Day Before

Chapter Text

“I HATE valentines day” Kris thought as they packed their backpack for the upcoming school day. The dreaded day was approaching and it was all Kris could think about. Walking down the stairs to stumble over to the bathroom, and quickly freshened up, not bothering to brush their hair. Susie was their first contender for a valentine, but their feelings for Susie are… complicated. “If she asks first,” they reassured themself. “Come on Kris!! Education waits for no one!!” Toriel called down from the kitchen. Her enthusiasm for the day was not reciprocated.
Out of the corner in their eye, Kris spotted a large, purple figure. “Hey Susie”, Kris signed at her. “Oh hey loser, good morning. I was gonna skip school today, wanna come with? Alphys thinks we caught the flu.” she asked, a newfound light in her eyes after mentioning skipping. The pair loved heading to the diner, or just chilling in the local woods inside the boring, stuffy classroom. “So… any plans for uh… you know… valentines day or.. whatever…it’s lame but if you wanted to.. uh,” Susie murmured, stuffing her hands in her pockets. Not usually one to make the first move, this was a new experience. Kris’s eyes widened in surprise, then squinted with laughter. A small chuckle turned into a laugh, which was probably the most the had laughed in years. “HEY!!! Its not funny jackass…” she mumbled, blushing from embarrassment. “Dude, its fine. I just didn’t expect it. Of course, we can do something! Just say the word.” Kris signed barely legibly from the leftover giggles shaking their body. A silence fell over them as they walked, admiring the scenery. February in Hometown was always lovely. The snow started to melt and grass was peeking through, but it was soft and powdery still. Most places had decorated with tacky decorative hearts and Cupids, but it gave an aura of comfort. Although she would never admit it, Susie loved it. As they walked closer to the diner, Kris silently entwined their hands. The human was too slick for their own good.
After holding the diner door open for Kris, Susie tried a move of her own. Sliding into the leather seats of the booth, Susie nonchalantly (on the outside at least), onto Kris’s thigh. It was a a small gesture, but it surprised them. “Thats kinda zesty dude…”
they signed.
Soon, Catti came waltzing by to take their order. “Uhh, I think ill take a large milkshake. Pipsqueak here will take a burger.” Susie ordered. It was their regular menu since they had first came, so Catti didn’t even write it down. Kris glanced around at the setting, the familiar faces and lighting bringing a small smile to the humans face. Suddenly, Susie took a small lock of their hair and fidgeted with it. It was a habit for Susie to finger their hair around since it was the one time she could sneak a glance at the glowing red eyes behind Kris’s bangs. The luminous red eyes fixated on their hands, trying not to panic as they realized Susie’s free hand was now around their shoulders, and if they looked romantic before, they might as well have been married now. “Got your grub, lovebirds! have a nice day.” Catti purred as she trotted away, loaded with gossip about the pair. People had often speculated about their relationship, and the dating allegations were about to get worse. “Uh…Kris?” she mumbled. “Yeah? Whats up?” Kris signed. “Are we.. like.. dating? I-I mean I can’t really tell these kinds of things…” This shocked Kris, and their jaw hung open before remarking, “I guess so? Despite my AMAZING flirting skills, i’ve never done this whole romance thing before…” their hands touched with their thumbs pointing up as to sign the word Before. A eerie quiet hung in the air, then, out of the blue, Kris pecked Susie on the cheek. “Bye Susie, my mom’s probably worried, I better get going.” they signed before laying down the check money although their pairs food lay untouched.
On their way home, Kris thought, maybe, Just maybe, Valentine’s day might not be so bad this year.
