Chapter 1: Then There Were Stars

Chapter Text

“DAD? WHAT'RE YOU DOING WITH THE BASKET?”

Nothing could stop Gaster from smiling down at his second youngest—second youngest! Papyrus have a little brother now! He have another adorable son!—son as he reached to ruffle his skull. “There’s Supposed To Be A Meteor Shower Tonight. I Was Thinking That All Of Us Could Watch It Together!”

Papyrus’s eye sockets went wide. “REALLY?” he asked, eye lights steadily forming into stars.

“Yup,” he said, patting his skull gently, marveling how thankful he is that his sons doesn't change too much since he's... unavailable. “Can You Get Your Older Brother And Younger Brother For Me And Meet Me At The Door?”

“VERY WELL!” Papyrus beamed, bouncing on his feet before running off.

Gaster’s smile only widened as he heard Avallon and Papyrus almost scream about how excited they were. Their enthusiasm was far too contagious for their oldest who's usually napping.

As expected, he had barely reached the door before his two youngest sons almost ran into him while Papyrus carry Sans on his shoulder, beaming smiles on their faces as they bounced on their feet as she opened the door and ushered them out.

“Avallon, Can You Help Me Carry The Blanket?” he asked, holding it out to him.

Avallon nodded, reaching out his phalanges and concentrating with an adorably determined look on his face.

“Thank You Starlight!” he praised, watching his youngest’s face break out in a brief smile before his look of concentration took over again. He moved the small basket from his phalanges to his shoulder, and took ahold of Papyrus’s free phalange as Gaster led all three of them to the clearing in the nearby park he’d chosen for this event.

Gaster took out a blanket from his inventory before setting it down on the ground, Avallon enthusiastically helping pat it down while Papyrus gently sets Sans on top of it.

As soon as that was done, he sat down on the blanket, his children immediately mimicking him and staring at the basket with curious looks. “We Have A Few Minutes Before It Starts, So I Believe Some Snacks Are In Order,” he said, revealing what she’d placed in the basket. "Toriel Has Kindly Provided Us With A Variety Of Snacks Before She Departed With Her Children And Asgore To Amusement Park This Morning."

“PASTA!” Papyrus almost screamed.

“B-blackberries!” Avallon gasped.

Sans didn’t say anything, but he already claimed a bottle of fresh ketchup to his ribs.

Gaster kept smiling as she took out said treats. “Don’t Hog All Of The Ketchup Sans,” he reminded him as they descended upon the cookies, the blackberries and the other snacks.

All of the blackberries and a good portion of the cookies were consumed within minutes, and soon enough he had three very happy children with full belly (and possibly sugar high).

He couldn’t help but chuckle as he laid beside them. Oh stars he really miss this type of moments.

Now then, it was time to get settled before the show started.

“What Do You Know About Meteors?” he asked.

“they come from space, from rocks traveling through the cosmos that come to the solar system and get trapped by the planet’s gravity,” Sans immediately piped up. Unsurprising, he was the one that have most fascinated in space, Avallon came to a close second.

“Correct! Is There Another Name For A Meteor That Doesn’t Completely Break Up In The Atmosphere And Instead Impacts The Ground?”

“A m-meteorite!” Avallon said.

“You Are Also Correct! Now Then Papyrus, Will We See Any Comets Tonight?”

“NOPE!” Papyrus said. “COMETS ARE THEIR OWN THING! THEY GET CAUGHT BY THE SUN’S GRAVITY, RIGHT?”

“You Are Correct!”

Gaster could have stayed like that forever. There was no better feeling than the knowledge that his children were happy.

He couldn’t deprive them of this sight, however. This will be the first Meteor Showers they witnessed since they came to the surface.

So he laid on his back, prompting his sons to do the same around him.

As soon as Avallon settled in, sandwiched between Sans and Papyrus, he positioned himself next to Papyrus and they waited for the sky to light up with streaks of light.

They did not have long to wait.

All three of his children gasped the moment the first one appeared in the sky, and he didn’t have to look to know all three of them had identical looks of awe, and probably star shaped eye lights on their faces.

None of his sons spoke for quite awhile as they watched the shooting stars streak across the skies.
