Magic Roots - Fionna x Huntress Wizard

Summary:

We all know that life goes on and that the world doesn’t stop for anyone, even when keeping up becomes harder and harder.
Fionna is no longer the warrior who saved lives with a smile. Now she struggles to hold on to a job and not completely lose that sense of heroism that only survives through helping others.
In one of the heaviest moments of her “normal” life, an unexpected encounter arrives: the Huntress Wizard.
Together, they will discover that Fionna’s world still holds more magic than it seems, that she can be much more than just another version of Finn, and that the Huntress Wizard doesn’t have to face everything on her own.

And perhaps they, and all of Ooo, will also come to understand that there are people who are not easy to save.

Welcome to a Fionna/Huntress Wizard fanfic!

Notes:

This is my first time using AO3, and I still haven’t fully figured it out yet. I’d also like to clarify that, first of all, I’m not a native English speaker, and secondly, I am the one writing this fanfic, but I originally started publishing it on Wattpad a few weeks ago. I’ll be uploading the fanfic here as well as on that app. If by any chance your language is Spanish, let me know so I can also publish the Spanish version here, or you can go to the app I mentioned earlier, since I’m posting it there in both Spanish and English.

Chapter 1: Lost tree

Chapter Text

(To understand the story a bit better, I recommend watching episode 4 of Fionna and Cake's second season, "The Cat Who Turned the Box," if I'm remembering the title correctly.)

(Thump - thump)

-It has to be around here -she murmured while being far too absorbed in finding the tree that would take her back to Ooo, the tree that would save Finn, the tree she herself had harmed without imagining such extreme consequences.

(Thump - thump)

Behind her, a girl who looked very similar to Finn and a magical cat kept following her, shouting at her to stop, but why would she? In the end, having people chasing her was the least of her worries. Right now she needed to avoid crashing into the many cars and people who only got in her way, and in her attempt to listen to the heart of the forest, she ran into a park and easily climbed different trees, pressing the side of her face against their trunks.

(Thump - thump - thump)

She could hear it, but she didn't know where the sound was coming from. Maybe to the left? Or that tree over there? Maybe if she went higher, she would find what she needed?

(Thump - thump - thump - thump)

Using the branches and bumps of the largest tree, Huntress Wizard climbed toward its peak. She was too focused to notice the weakness taking over her own body and too desperate to stop and give importance to anything else... she finally reached the top, where she saw someone she didn't expect to see-but someone she knew well.

-Did you know dehydration causes hallucinations? -that was what the Forest Spirit said, sitting far too comfortably on the treetop. Huntress Wizard parted her lips to say something, but the Forest Spirit kept speaking in his characteristically calm voice-. Delirium, bad mood, dry mouth and eyes, drowsiness...

-I know that! But right now I just want to find the heart of the forest. How can I do that? -she spoke quickly and with noticeable urgency. She truly respected her master, but every second was too important for Finn's well-being.

(Thump - thump - thump - thump)

-I can't stop hearing it, but I don't know where it is! -Huntress was visibly stressed, tired, her hands on the sides of her head, almost grabbing and bruising her leafy hair.

-What thing?

-The heart!

(Thump - thump - thump - thump)

-Ah... ah! Your hearing continues to impress me, because you're actually close to the magical heart... not the forest's.

(Thump - thump - thump - thump)

At that moment, Huntress Wizard woke up, not with a jolt and sharp instincts like she normally would. She was extremely tired, and she still couldn't help feeling dry and a little hungry. The lack of nutrients was, without a doubt, another annoying obstacle keeping her from thinking of a plan. With her eyes half-open, more from exhaustion than anything else, she looked at a white cat with orange patches carrying her with ease.

-....

She turned her gaze away and looked at the girl who had fed her earlier. If she remembered correctly, her name was... Fionna? Yes, that was her name. She really wanted to keep searching for the forest's heart and for a way to return to Ooo, her original dimension, but she now understood that she needed to rest if she didn't want to faint again.

-...Where are we going?

Cake seemed to be the first to notice Huntress Wizard, while Fionna was only just starting to pull herself out of her own thoughts and worries.

-Uh... I'd like to tell you we're going to my home, but I just got kicked out of there for... not paying rent... and they probably kicked Cake out too because I didn't pay hers either... -she answered with a small embarrassed smile, barely looking at Huntress Wizard before looking toward another part of the dark street-. Tomorrow I'll try talking to Marshall's mom to see if I can do something or at least retrieve my things.

A silent pause followed, interrupted only by the nighttime sounds of the city, the typical noises one would expect: distant drunkards or indistinguishable conversations happening inside the few houses and shops that still had their lights on.

-For now I'm trying to think where we should spend the night... I don't even think Lumpy has a home, Hunter is probably furious at me, and Gary has too many problems for me to add more! -the last part came out louder and more frustrated than she meant it to, but she kept walking-. A-adding problems meant having me bothering him at his place, not that you were a problem -she added in a softer voice, letting out a tired sigh.

Cake, still carrying Huntress Wizard, knew it was better not to think too much about that, so she looked down where the "bush girl" was and asked:

-You haven't told us. How did you get here? And what's that about the heart of the forest?

Huntress Wizard stayed silent for a few seconds. She really didn't know if telling them what was happening would help at all, though her doubts faded because of two facts: she was alone in an unknown universe, and these girls seemed to be versions of Finn and Jake. And although this human girl didn't seem as heroic as Finn, her helpfulness, despite everything, reminded her of him.

-I wanted to help someone... the Finn from my dimension -she narrowed her eyes a bit, thinking that it was best to stay vague so she wouldn't reveal the secrets of the green mages, just to be cautious-. He's in very bad shape, and I tried to use... I knew of different magical trees, but one of them was more powerful than I thought, and it made me travel between dimensions by accident.

Cake and especially Fionna looked very shocked by the story, especially by the idea of a portal inside a tree.

-You mean there's even a magical tree in this dimension? Where? -Fionna asked, walking now closer to Cake and therefore a little closer to Huntress, who remained lying in the giant cat's arms.

-...I don't know, I simply appeared in your house -she pointed at Fionna- and crawled to the nearest flowerpot b-because I turned into a seed in the process. -She feared her half-truth would be insufficient and that they'd keep prying into things they shouldn't know-. We've been like this for a long time. How long until we get somewhere we can rest?

Fionna blushed a little and then stopped walking.

-W-we walked past Gary's house -she turned around and began walking again.

In another dimension, in the kingdom where almost everything is made of candy, Finn, the most heroic human in Ooo, was still lying on a bed of pink fabrics, surrounded by the smartest princess of all, her girlfriend, and Simon, the one who perhaps had the cure to his condition...
