Will Anyone Weep?

Summary:

A ship lost at sea, A star burned out too soon, a boy who died being brave.
But will anyone weep?

****
An ode to the Black Brothers, and to all who ask the same question.

Notes:

Not my usual style, I never share my poems with anyone, but this one felt too important not to.

It’s obviously inspired by Regulus and Sirius Black, but it’s also more than that for me.

For anyone who has ever asked the question: you matter. You do. No matter what.

Feel free to share your interpretations in the comments. I’d love to hear which lines resonated with you.

Work Text:

If two ships leave the same harbor
And brave the same storm,
Yet only one is lost to the sea —
Will the other weep?
When safer waters were within reach,
When it didn’t turn back to see,
When it left the other to drown.

If a star’s light
Is overtaken by the suns,
If it sets
Before anyone sees it shine —
Will anyone weep?
When the brighter still burns strong,
When a star goes out in darkness,
When only one name is remembered.

If an infant cries,
If a toddler pleads,
If a child begs —
Will anyone weep?
For the teen who stayed silent,
Who was left behind once more,
Who hurt too much to try,
Who decided to be brave.

Will anyone weep?
For the ship lost at sea,
For the star whose light was never seen,
For the teen who died with only one question:
“Will he weep?”
