Chapter Text
It was a sunny day with a gentle breeze, a perfect day some would say. In the distance you could hear the delighted cheers of children as they splashed in a nearby lake. The smell of flowers and hotdogs filled the air as people gathered around to celebrate a birthday for some young raccoon with a birthday cake that had a nine on it.
Sonic smiled as he ran past the festivities, it being the tenth party he spotted already. Seeing so many happy smiling children filled him with hope about the future.
This is what he was sacrificing everything for.
He did it for the children.
He did it for the families.
He did it for his friends.
He did it for everyone.
Everyone deserved to have a beautiful home like this.
Does everyone include him though...does he deserve a home like this?

"AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!"
A scream cuts through the battlefield. A scream filled with pain, the kind of scream that you just know will cause a raw throat. A scream filled with pure agony, agony that goes much deeper than the surface level.
Everyone turns away from their fights to see a terrifying sight. A blue hedgehog that they all know and love is dangling upside down, his right ankle being held between to robotic fingers clearly broken.
How could this have happened? How could thongs go sour so fast?

Sonic was running back to the meet up spot after his trip to the store getting more cheese for the chili dogs. He was glad that Amy came up with the idea of a monthly get together, now he didn't need to check in every week with her to make sure he's still alive. She's a great friend but sometimes she can be a little intense.
Upon reaching the spot he was glad to see Knuckles and Tails had finished setting up the decorations and cooking the food, it would be a small met up this time with the three of the plus Rouge. Rouge said she would try to convince Shadow to come but knowing how he is he wouldn't be making an appearance.
"Everything looks great Tails, where would you like the cheese?" Sonic asked shaking the grocery bag.
Tails pointed towards a giant table that had all the food on it as he continued his conversation with Knuckles.
Sonic arrives at the table and spots the empty bowl waiting for its' cheese, he begins pouring in the cheese when he suddenly feels the ground shake. He stops and looks over at Tails and Knuckles who both shake their head, before either could respond Sonic was running off in the direction the shake came from.
Knuckles helped Tails back up after he fell from the wind Sonic left rushing past them, he was about to run off in the same direction when he noticed the fox writing something.
"What are you doing?"
"I'm leaving a note so Rouge knows where we went incase we're not back before she arrives." Tails answered.
He pins the note to a tree, then the pair take off running to catch up to their impulsive friend.

The scene the arrive to is nothing abnormal, Sonic is taking down robots left and right but for each destroyed three more pop up. That's when the ground shakes again and a new robot appears. A shiny metal 20 foot robot with a logo of a snake encircling a hedgehog engraved into it. It looked like their was something else on the logo but before either could inspect it more they got attacked. They had enough time to see the new robot start attacking Sonic before the pair got hit from behind.
Quick to recover Knuckles was taking on the regular robots on the left and tails had just enough time to dodge an incoming hit on his right. Jumping into the air he gathered the attention of the rest of the regular robots and began fighting. Both of them trying to get rid of these guys as fast as possible to help Sonic out, but just like before a new one seemed to replace each fallen drone.
They had taken care of enough robots to where they could finally see the army thinning, but that's when things went south. They heard a pained filled scream only to discover Sonic being held upside down by a broken ankle. The giant robot flung Sonic like a frisbee into the ground, where the young hero was knocked unconscious.
Knuckles had enough time to shout Sonic before a robot smashed a rock against his head causing the red echidna to fall giving the robots the opening they were waiting for to get revenge for their fallen brethren.
Tails managed to avoid the rock meant for him by flying in the air. From the vantage point he could see the robot approaching his unconscious brother, tails shouted for his brother in a desperate attempt to wake him up. Which failed but got the attention of the big robot who started to approach him. Tails tried to fly away but got backhanded by the robot into the ground near an unconscious Knuckles. The last thing Tails sees before succumbing to the robot attack was his brother, unconscious and bleeding being carried away by that giant robot. The last thing he felt was the rock to the back of his head.
