Fate brought them together and divided them just as easily- but what is fate if not just another name for the coincidences that lead to their births? Fate’s a joke and a word people throw around to excuse whatever fucked up dynamics they feel like, and Madara is on about as good terms with fate as he is with “God” these days.
They’re worse than strangers; they’re a terrible portrait of what once was, what could have been, if he hadn’t destroyed any chance for repairing it at every opportunity, and it’s not gonna stop any time soon. Kanata has a better life without him in it; Kanata has a life that Madara thought he wanted - the heroics, the adoring fans, the precious friends at every turn - and even when he burns with jealousy, Madara could never watch Kanata lose it all.
It’d be easier to hate the happiness Kanata has found if, despite everything, Madara didn’t still love him underneath it all…and their distance would probably hurt less, too.
