Work Text:
Nishinoya sprinted out of his classroom, slowing down to a speed-walk when he was reprimanded for running in the halls. Every day, he was grateful that his class let out early.
In earlier years, he would’ve credited that gratefulness for being able to get to practice sooner. This year, though, he found himself making a quick pit stop somewhere else before going to the gym.
“Asahi!”
The skittish man in question glanced up at the mention of his name, his shoulders dropping tension when he recognized who was accosting him. “One of these days, you’re going to burst in before class ends. I don’t even want to know how much trouble you’d get into for that.”
Nishinoya scoffed. “You don’t put enough trust in me! I always check first.”
“Excuse me if I find that hard to believe.” Asahi stood up from his chair, picking up his bag and slinging it over his shoulder. “You aren’t typically one to think in advance when it comes to this sort of thing.”
“It’s not my fault that my brain moves too fast,” Nishinoya said, tugging on Asahi’s sleeve. “Hurry up.”
“Nishi, we have time,” Asahi protested, pushing his chair in.
“Just because we have time doesn’t mean we have to waste it,” Nishinoya said, using all his body weight to drag Asahi out of the classroom. Asahi didn’t even budge at the effort.
“If you’re so concerned about getting there early, why do you come here every day?” Asahi asked, following Nishinoya out of the classroom.
“To make sure you don’t skip practice anymore,” Nishinoya said nonchalantly. “You can’t run away from me , Asahi.”
“I don’t intend to. I’ve been going to practice regularly for two months now,” Asahi said. “I think it’s pretty safe to assume that I’m not skipping out anymore.”
Nishinoya faltered for a moment, almost tripping over nothing. Some part of him knew that Asahi would come to practice regardless of whether or not Nishinoya delivered him there, but Nishinoya usually silenced it. In fact, his entire brain emptied for a moment at the prompting of a simple question.
Why did he keep on coming all the way here?
“O-oh, I’m sorry if that came across as rude. I was just curious,” Asahi said, always quick to backpedal and take the fault when someone else seemed uncomfortable.
Nishinoya snapped out of it. “No, don’t worry! I was just starting to think that this is a ploy .”
“A ploy?” Asahi repeated, mortified at the very mention of something nefarious happening.
“You think you’re so slick, don’t you, Asahi?” Nishinoya said, pausing in front of the gym. “Trying to get me to not show up so you can finally make your escape!”
“Nishi, I would never !”
“No, I’m seeing that my escort missions are more than necessary!” Nishinoya continued. “I see just who you are, Asahi.”
“I’m sorry!” Asahi said. “I didn’t mean to imply anything! I mean, I enjoy your presence here.”
Nishinoya chuckled. “Jeez, Asahi, I was just kidding. You really need to get better at taking jokes.”
Asahi sighed. “Maybe I should be rescinding my previous statement. I don’t think I should be around people who toy with my emotions like that.”
Nishinoya laughed, punching Asahi’s arm a couple times as he did. “You’re funny, you know that?”
“I think you just have a weird sense of humor,” Asahi said, rubbing his attacked arm and stepping inside the gym.
“Or you could just admit that you’re funny,” Nishinoya said, shrugging.
“Or you could just admit you have a weird sense of humor,” Asahi said. “Or, maybe we should just drop this before it gets too confusing.”
Nishinoya narrowed his eyes. “Don’t think this is over. One of these days, I’ll get you to admit you’re funny.”
“It might take a while,” Asahi said.
“Even more reason to track you down after class,” Nishinoya said.
“At least this one makes sense,” Asahi said, chuckling.
Nishinoya laughed it off, but the implication still hung over his head. What was the real reason?
Nishinoya stared at the blue soda popsicles, contemplating if he could somehow convince Ukai to give him one for free.
“What are you thinking about?”
Nishinoya glanced up at Asahi who was hovering above him, smiling.
“What’s the best way to get a popsicle for free?” Nishinoya asked.
“I can buy one for you,” Asahi offered. “It’s not really free , but it would be free for you .”
“Oh, you really don’t have to,” Nishinoya said, his protests weak.
“It’s not a big deal,” Asahi insisted. “Besides, I feel like I owe you something.”
“Owe me?” Nishinoya asked. “Why?”
Asahi shrugged. “You really love volleyball, but I kind of took that away from you.”
“You already made it up to me by coming back,” Nishinoya said. “You don’t owe me anything.”
Asahi grabbed two blue soda popsicles from the freezer. “Okay. So after this, you owe me.”
“Hey, wait!” Nishinoya trailed after Asahi towards the cash register. “That’s not how this goes!”
“How does it go, then?” Asahi asked, slotting behind another customer in line.
“You’re my upperclassman, and you’re treating me because you’re cool and old.”
“Cool and old?” Asahi asked, devastated. “Is that really how you see me?”
Nishinoya thought it over for a second. “They’re not the only words I’d use to describe you, but they fit.”
“I’m not even a year older than you, you know,” Asahi protested.
Nishinoya shrugged. “Still old.”
Asahi thought for a moment before speaking. “Um, how would you-“
“Hey, Nishinoya!”
Asahi was interrupted by Ukai gesturing to Nishinoya behind his counter.
“One sec,” Nishinoya said, holding up a finger to Asahi as he walked over to Ukai. “What’s good, Coach?”
“I need you for what’s not good. Can you tell Baldy to be quieter out there? It’s too late for him to be yelling like that,” Ukai said, pointing to the door.
“Sure!” Nishinoya exited the convenience store, and found Tanaka, Daichi, and Sugawara all chatting outside. Sugawara and Daichi were laughing at Tanaka, who was gaping at the two of them.
“Ryu, Coach wants you to shut up,” Nishinoya announced, shoving his way into their conversation.
“You would yell too if you knew what I know,” Tanaka said, crossing his arms — his voice a touch quieter than usual. Tanaka looked at Sugawara, prompting him to speak.
“I was just mentioning how Shimizu and Asahi have been spending a lot of time together as of late,” Sugawara said. “It’s some project? But they were discussing working on it outside of school.”
“Outside of school?” Nishinoya repeated. “That’s… so scandalous! I would’ve never expected it from Asahi.”
“I know, right?” Tanaka said. “Do you think she’s into guys that are shier?”
“I think you’re taking it a bit far, Tanaka,” Daichi said. “I’m almost certain that Asahi and Shimizu aren’t going to be a thing.”
“That’s a bit rude to Asahi,” Nishinoya said, pouting.
“I think you’re misunderstanding,” Sugawara said quickly. “We know Asahi’s into someone else.”
“Someone else?” Tanaka exclaimed. “Who could possibly be better than our radiant goddess?”
“That’s easy!” Sugawara smirked. “It’s-“
“-something we’re not allowed to disclose,” Daichi said, elbowing Sugawara.
“This whole thing is suspicious,” Tanaka said, eyeing Daichi and Sugawara. “No one is immune to Kiyoko’s beauty. I’ll still have my sights on Asahi.”
“Yeah, me too!” Nishinoya concurred. “I’ll only have eyes for Asahi.”
“Huh?” Asahi stepped outside of the convenience store at a not-so-convenient time.
“Asahi…” Tanaka murmured, staring down the man.
“Suga,” he whined, “what did you say?”
“Why did you assume I said something?”
“Did you?”
“… maybe.”
“We were just telling them about your project with Shimizu,” Daichi said, explaining the situation before things spiraled even more out of control. “You’re all good, dude.”
“I wouldn’t say good ,” Tanaka said, crossing his arms and putting on his meanest face. “Inviting Kiyoko to work on something outside of class? What’s your game, man?”
“There’s a public library by her house,” Asahi said while Nishinoya peeked inside the plastic bag he was holding. “I just need another good grade, really.”
Tanaka glared at Asahi for a moment more before sighing. “I suppose that’s a good enough reason.”
Asahi sighed in relief. “I won’t forget your mercy.”
“You’re such a drama queen,” Nishinoya said, while Sugawara and Daichi nodded in agreement.
“Can you blame me? Tanaka can be scary when he wants to be,” Asahi said.
Tanaka struggled to hide his smile. “Oh, stop! Now you’re just flattering me.”
“Is that a compliment?” Sugawara whispered to Daichi.
“I don’t think it’s supposed to be,” Daichi responded, “but Tanaka values some… interesting things.”
“Hey!” Tanaka said. “What’s that supposed to mean?”
Daichi opened his mouth to retaliate, but was interrupted by Ukai slamming open the door. “If you don’t shut up, I’m kicking you all off the team!”
“Time to go,” Daichi said, waving and fleeing the scene. The rest of them quickly (and quietly) said their goodbyes and escaped Ukai’s wrath.
Nishinoya trailed after Asahi, reaching into the plastic bag to grab his popsicle. “Yoink!”
Asahi grabbed his own and unwrapped it. “Sorry if it’s a little bit melted.”
“It’s not too bad,” Nishinoya noted, throwing out the wrapper. “It tastes the same anyway.”
The pair fell into a comfortable silence as they walked the route back to their houses, gnawing on their slightly melted popsicles.
“You didn’t seem that mad about the whole Shimizu thing,” Asahi observed, glancing at Nishinoya who was jauntily walking next to him, trying to ascertain how Nishinoya reacted.
“Yeah,” Nishinoya said, licking his popsicle.
“I guess I was expecting you to be as aggressive about it as Tanaka was,” Asahi said.
Nishinoya shrugged. “Daichi and Suga said it was nothing to worry about.”
“Oh! That’s good,” Asahi said, his voice about an octave higher than usual. “What else did they say?”
“Just that you’re into someone else,” Nishinoya said. “Didn’t say who , though.”
Asahi sighed. “That’s a relief.”
“Not into Kiyoko? That’s, like, a crime,” Nishinoya joked.
“Yeah, I’m definitely not. I-I mean, I understand the appeal and all, she’s gorgeous, but-“ Asahi said, stumbling through the words before cutting himself off. “I don’t know what to say that won’t make you mad.”
Nishinoya shrugged. “Just tell the truth.”
“She’s great and all, but I think I’ll only ever see her as a friend,” Asahi said. “Also, someone else captivated my attention.”
“I won’t pressure you into saying who, because it seems like you don’t really want people to know, but I’m just wondering… if you’re not into Kiyoko, what’s your type?”
Asahi thought it over for a second. “I guess… someone whose strengths are my weaknesses. It makes me feel secure.”
“Man, that’s a lot deeper than I thought it’d be!” Nishinoya said. “I like Kiyoko because she’s pretty, smart, and cool.”
“That’s admirable in its own right,” Asahi said. “Shimizu does have a lot of good traits.”
“Yeah, but I don’t think it’ll ever happen,” Nishinoya said, looking up at the moon. “She’s perfect, but out of reach.”
Asahi chuckled. “I get what you mean.”
“Hey, don’t think like that, Asahi!” Nishinoya urged. “Come on, you’re a catch!”
Asahi’s eyes widened. “You think so?”
“Absolutely!”
“Thanks,” Asahi said, smiling. “Anyone would be lucky to be with you. Shimizu or anyone else.”
“Well, yeah, I know that ,” Nishinoya said. “You should know that the same applies to you. Except not the Kiyoko part.”
“I’m worthy of everyone but Kiyoko?” Asahi teased.
“I didn’t mean it like that, really,” Nishinoya said. “It’s like… bro code.”
“And that’s why both you and Tanaka both pine after her endlessly,” Asahi said.
Nishinoya fiddled with the popsicle stick in his hands. “I know it doesn’t make perfect sense-“
“It doesn’t make sense at all.”
“-but! I think Ryu has more of a chance with her, and if he ends up with her, I’m fine with that.”
Asahi stared at Nishinoya for a moment. “So it’s fine if Shimizu is with Ryu but it’s not okay if I am?”
“Yes. And don’t ask me why.”
Asahi grinned. “Why?”
Nishinoya glared at Asahi. “Because.”
Asahi chuckled. “Excellent reasoning.”
“I told you not to ask.”
“I guess you did.” Asahi took Nishinoya’s popsicle stick and walked up to his front door. “I guess you still haven’t figured out the reason.”
“Wha-? I know the reason very well. It’s just… confidential.”
Asahi shrugged. “Goodnight, Nishi.”
Asahi shut the front door behind him with a quick wave. Nishinoya crossed his arms. ‘Because’ was perfectly sufficient reasoning.
Nishinoya’s routine was put on hold when Ennoshita reminded him that the third years had a mandatory meeting after classes, therefore cutting into club time. Nishinoya walked to the gym alone, finding Hinata and Kageyama already peppering to one another.
“Ennoshita told me about the third years,” Ukai said as Nishinoya entered the gym. He gestured towards the freak duo. “They’re just doing some exercises. How about you join Tsukishima and Yamaguchi?”
Nishinoya nodded before jogging over to the two first years, where Tsukishima was scowling and Yamaguchi was smiling.
“Are you joining us, Nishinoya?” Yamaguchi asked, spinning a ball in his hands.
“You betcha!” Nishinoya said. “What are we doing?”
“Tsukki was going to serve to me and I was gonna receive,” Yamaguchi said. “But I get that receiving is sort of your thing, so…”
“Don’t back down,” Tsukishima chided. “Besides, Nishinoya’s been working on setting recently.”
“Oh, you’re right! Sorry, Tsukki!”
“Shut up, Yamaguchi.”
“Okay, yeah! Setting!” Nishinoya positioned himself next to Yamaguchi as Tsukishima ducked under the net. “Don’t you think I’m the best setter, Tsukishima? Better than Kageyama?”
“Hey! Are you guys talking about me?” Kageyama asked, spiking a ball into Hinata’s face.
“Why are you attacking me ?” Hinata whined.
“You at least have more brain cells than that moron,” Tsukishima said to Nishinoya. “But then again, the bar is below the floor.”
“I’ll take it!”
Tsukishima started off with some simple serves (just about as much effort as he would put in for practice matches), and Yamaguchi was receiving them with relative ease.
Tsukishima started to ramp up the difficulty, and Yamaguchi’s consistency was less certain. Nishinoya found himself glancing towards the door every once in a while, waiting for a familiar four figures to enter.
“I think he’s going to combust when the third years graduate.” Tsukishima had whispered to Yamaguchi, but it was audible to Nishinoya.
“Yeah, I feel bad,” Yamaguchi said. “Do you think he’s gonna quit again next year?”
“Hey!” Nishinoya protested. “You know I can hear you, right?”
“Oh, could you?” Tsukishima feigned ignorance. “Were you eavesdropping , Nishinoya?”
Nishinoya faltered. “It’s not eavesdropping if you’re loudly talking about me.”
“I think it still is,” Tsukishima said.
“Either way!” Nishinoya said, not really liking the way the conversation was panning out. “I wouldn’t quit again! I’m Karasuno’s Guardian Angel!”
“So, what happened last time?” Yamaguchi asked. “Was the Guardian Angel on vacation?”
“It’s… complicated,” Nishinoya said.
“Well, I find it rather simple, really,” Tsukishima said. “Do you want my help?”
“No, not really-”
“See, your conflict really arose after the Date Tech match last year,” Tsukishima said. “But am I right in saying that you didn’t want to quit?”
“I didn’t,” Nishinoya affirmed. “But I had to.”
“See, you had to. Why’s that?” Tsukishima pushed his glasses higher up on his nose.
“Because Asahi left,” Yamaguchi replied. “That’s why we’re a bit worried that we might lose you when he graduates.”
“It’s different,” Nishinoya quipped. “He left the team because of me.”
“If Hinata quit the team because I messed up too many blocks, I wouldn’t quit,” Tsukishima said. “Hell, I’d be proud .”
“Well, you’re just a nasty person,” Nishinoya said. “If Yamaguchi quit because of you, would you quit too?”
“Yes.”
Nishinoya was taken aback by Tsukishima’s sudden bluntness. “See? Sometimes you’re close enough to someone that it’s not even a question.”
Tsukishima and Yamaguchi shared a knowing glance with smirks.
“What is it?” Nishinoya asked. “I don’t like that look in your eyes.”
“ How close?” Tsukishima asked.
Nishinoya hadn’t really bothered to think about it that much. “Why do you even need to know?”
“I’m trying to help you realize something. You said you hadn’t thought about it much, so I’m filling in some of the gaps,” Tsukishima said. “So, how close?”
“Well, how close are you and Yamaguchi?”
“So you’re saying your relationship with Asahi is analogous to mine and Yamaguchi’s?” Tsukishima asked.
Nishinoya suddenly felt as though he was being interrogated, and wasn’t sure if there was a right answer to the question that Tsukishima had just asked. But Yamaguchi and Tsukishima were best friends, so… “Sure.”
“Wow, Nishinoya!” Yamaguchi said, smiling. “I didn’t know you were dating Asahi.”
Dating… Asahi?
“Aw, look at how flustered he is!” Tsukishima said. “I think you’re onto something, Tadashi.”
“Hey, shut up!” Nishinoya said. “I’m not flustered, I’m just thinking .”
“You’re capable of that?” Tsukishima asked.
“Yes!”
“What’s there to think about?” Yamaguchi asked. “It’s either true, or it’s not.”
“Well, it’s not!” Nishinoya said.
“But we still seemed to have struck a nerve, didn't we?” Tsukishima asked.
Nishinoya opened his mouth to protest, but realized that he didn’t even know what he would say. There was one thing running through his mind, and he would rather die than say it out loud — Tsukishima was right. They had struck a nerve.
“Tsukki, you broke him,” Yamaguchi whined.
“Hey, don’t just hold me accountable,” Tsukishima said. “This was all your idea.”
Nishinoya wasn’t dating Asahi. That was the end of the story, the answer to Yamaguchi’s question. So why did he falter like that?
“Should we get someone?” Nishinoya could faintly hear Yamaguchi speaking. “I mean, seriously, this cannot be healthy.”
“And interrupt his first thought? I wouldn’t dare be so cruel.”
Nishinoya prayed for more thoughts to enter his head to drown out the one that was the loudest. Nishinoya waited for the anger to settle in at the first years’ question so it would shove aside the unsettling feeling in his chest.
“Oh, that face he’s making is kinda funny. Maybe it is his first thought.”
Despite Nishinoya’s internal battle, he had no choice but to directly confront the unnerving truth that Tsukishima and Yamaguchi had given him.
When Yamaguchi congratulated him on his relationship with Asahi, Nishinoya had wanted it to be true.
Some small part of him felt pride at the thought that he could be with Asahi. That small part of him, for a brief moment, wanted to thank Yamaguchi.
“Oh, boy-toy incoming!”
Nishinoya could barely even hear Tsukishima anymore. His mind was racing a mile a minute, every thought about Asahi. Had he always felt this way and just hadn’t realized it? Had his admiration for his ace always run this deep? Had he always wanted to run his fingers through Asahi’s hair and hold him tightly and-
Nishinoya’s mind went blank at the sudden knocking on the top of his head.
“Hello, is anyone home?”
Nishinoya knew who it was before he had even spoken.
“I’m a shell of the man I used to be.”
Asahi chuckled. “I know Tsukishima can be scary, but you’re always telling me to not be a wimp about it.”
Nishinoya grabbed Asahi’s shirt. “It’s not Tsukishima. Yamaguchi’s behind it all. Tsukishima is just his little henchman who does his bidding. Yamaguchi’s evil, and cruel, and can see into your soul-“
Tsukishima snickered in the background.
“Um, excuse me,” Nishinoya said. “I’m not done ranting about your boy-toy.”
“ I’m the boy-toy? I thought I was the mastermind,” Yamaguchi said, disappointment dripping from his voice.
“You’re right, Yamaguchi,” Nishinoya said. “You’re not the boy-toy. I am the boy-toy, because you two played me like a toy!”
“Sick burn,” Asahi commented, urging Tsukishima and Yamaguchi to (poorly) hide their laughter.
“Asahi, it loses all its power when you say that,” Nishinoya whined.
Asahi put his hand over his mouth. “My bad!”
Nishinoya sighed. “No, it’s alright. We don’t need these losers, anyway.” Nishinoya stuck his tongue out at the first years, and Yamaguchi playfully stuck his out back.
“Actually, we do,” Asahi said. “I’m meant to join your group.”
Nishinoya deflated immediately. “Stuck with these losers who think they know everything.”
“We don’t know everything,” Tsukishima said, shrugging innocently. “You told us we were wrong.”
Nishinoya seethed at the first year and was about to lunge at him before Asahi picked him up under his arms and held him in the air. “Well, now you know everything!”
“I was unaware that personal details about you were necessary for knowing everything,” Yamaguchi said, completely unsubtle in his glance over to Asahi.
“Why are you looking at me?” Asahi asked, hesitantly placing Nishinoya back down, lest his shaking arms drop him.
“You could be a contender for knowing everything,” Tsukishima replied. “I mean, you know a lot about Nishinoya’s personal life.”
“Not that much-“
“What’s his favorite color?”
“I think it’s yellow.”
“Favorite food?”
“Well, that’s easy. Blue soda flavored popsicles.”
“Birthday?”
“Now you’re really making it easy! November tenth.”
Nishinoya tried to ignore how impressed he was by Asahi’s success, although they were relatively easy questions.
“Fine. Who’s he dating?”
The smile on Asahi’s face fell, and he turned to face Nishinoya. “Um, maybe I wouldn’t be a contender for knowing everything.”
“Bummer,” Tsukishima said. “That’s what we just found out, too.”
“Trick question, by the way, he’s very single,” Yamaguchi added.
“Hey!” Nishinoya said. “That’s true, but you didn’t have to put ‘very’ before it.”
“I’m sorry, I thought this was a volleyball club!” Coach Ukai’s voice rang out through the gym, effectively silencing all the boys. “Why didn’t anyone tell me this turned into a chat-about-things-that-are-definitely-not-volleyball club?”
Asahi, Nishinoya, Yamaguchi, and Tsukishima all glanced at each other before filing onto opposite sides of the net. Nishinoya was sure to send the first years an extra glare for good luck.
Yamaguchi turned to Tsukishima. “I can’t believe how much effort I’m putting in to help him, and I’m being treated like a villain.”
“He’ll get it soon, Tadashi.”
Nishinoya was dismissed from class, and he hurriedly stuffed all of his books into his bag before bolting out of the door. He turned towards the stairs, but all his momentum was stopped by someone grabbing his arm.
“Hey!” Nishinoya turned to find his assailant, only to see the person who he was rushing to see in the first place.
Asahi smiled at Nishinoya, releasing his arm. “Sorry for grabbing you like that. I tried to call out to get your attention, but you didn't even seem to hear me.”
“Oh, it’s no big deal. I didn’t even hear you at all,” Nishinoya said.
“I didn’t realize you pretty much sprinted up to my classroom,” Asahi said, starting to walk towards the clubroom.
“Well, I have to get there before you leave,” Nishinoya justified.
“You really take this seriously,” Asahi noted.
“It’s, uh.” Nishinoya paused for a moment and coughed, deepening his voice before speaking again. “It’s nice to spend time with you.”
Nishinoya was met with silence before he heard a soft, “Ooooookay? It’s nice to spend time with you, too.”
“It is?” Nishinoya asked, way too quickly for it to seem normal.
Asahi looked down at Nishinoya, his brow furrowed with concern. “Are you feeling okay?”
“Perfectly fine!” Nishinoya said.
“Did something happen in class?” Asahi asked.
“Asahi, seriously , I’m fine,” Nishinoya insisted.
“Is Yamaguchi… bullying you?”
Nishinoya looked back up at Asahi, seeing that his question was entirely serious. “Asahi, I’m not being bullied by a kid younger than me.”
“He’s taller than you, though,” Asahi said. “Erm, no offense.”
“ Much offense taken! I could beat Yamaguchi up in a fight so easily,” Nishinoya said, punching the air to demonstrate.
“Nishinoya, you’re going to beat up Yamaguchi?”
Nishinoya turned around to face Hinata, Yachi, and Kageyama. “Hinata! No, I’m not going to beat up Yamaguchi!”
“You were fighting a lot on the court yesterday,” Kageyama said. “But if you’re going to beat up someone , go straight for Tsukishima. I don’t see why you should target Yamaguchi first.”
“Kageyama, he shouldn’t be beating anyone up!” Yachi interjected.
“Yeah, Kageyama, you’re so stupid!” Hinata didn’t hesitate to yell at Kageyama.
“You would think it was Tsukishima, but Yamaguchi is behind it all!” Nishinoya responded. “How does no one else see it?”
“Nishi, maybe you should clarify that you’re not beating anyone up again?” Asahi suggested, whispering to Nishinoya.
“Oh!” Nishinoya said. “Right! I’m not beating up anyone!”
Hinata didn’t look convinced. “Yachi, should we tell a trusted adult?”
“Does Asahi count as a trusted adult?” Kageyama asked.
“I don’t know if I can trust him if he’s siding with the bully,” Yachi whimpered.
“Hey, I don’t side with bullies!” Asahi said. “I know I can sometimes look mean, but I’m really not!”
“You wouldn’t side with me?” Nishinoya said.
“So you’re admitting to being a bully?” Yachi asked.
“Wait, no! But you all think I’m a bully, and I thought Asahi was my ride-or-die!”
“I’ll ride, but I think I’m a bit young to die…”
“So, can we trust Asahi or not?” Kageyama asked. “Maybe Daichi would be a better bet…”
“Daichi fights enough demons as it is,” Nishinoya said. “He doesn’t need to deal with bullying accusations as well.”
“ False bullying accusations!” Asahi clarified.
Yachi squinted at Asahi and Nishinoya. “Takeda would probably be our best bet.”
“You don’t need to involve Takeda,” Asahi insisted. “No one is beating up anyone.”
“Yamaguchi beat me up yesterday,” Nishinoya said.
“I thought you said he didn’t?” Asahi asked, his eyebrows knitted together.
“Emotionally. Which is worse,” Nishinoya said.
“I don’t think Yamaguchi would bully anyone,” Hinata said. “It’s not very like him.”
“Tsukishima, on the other hand…” Kageyama said.
“Is it like me to bully someone?” Nishinoya asked.
Yachi fiddled with her hair. “I didn’t think so…”
“That’s because it’s not,” Nishinoya said. “I promise, there’s no bullying going on here.”
Kageyama, Hinata, and Yachi all glanced between each other before Hinata spoke up. “Yeah, I guess that makes sense.”
“Sorry for accusing you,” Yachi said.
“It’s no big deal, we got it all sorted out,” Nishinoya said. “You guys should go to practice before Daichi thinks you died. It’s not like you to not be early.”
Kageyama and Hinata nodded before bolting away, Yachi trailing behind them, urging them not to run in the halls.
“That was a mess,” Asahi said, sighing.
“It’s nice that they’re looking out for Yamaguchi, but I’m not sure why I had to be put under fire for that,” Nishinoya said.
“You were saying some pretty damning things,” Asahi said.
“Well, to you ,” Nishinoya specified. “You wouldn’t take my statement as proof that I’m bullying him.”
“I don’t know if you can trust me anymore. I mean, I admitted that I wouldn’t support your bullying habits,” Asahi teased.
“Okay, yeah! What was up with that? You wouldn’t help me?”
“I wouldn’t bully someone, no,” Asahi said.
“It’s about the sentiment , not the literal. I have your back no matter what, but it seems like it’s one-sided,” Nishinoya said dramatically.
“If it’s about the symbolism, then sure. I’d help.”
“I’m glad my devotion isn’t unrequited, then.”
Nishinoya paused. He hadn’t completely intended to say it like that. He glanced up at Asahi to gauge his reaction.
Had Asahi always looked at him with such gentle eyes? Had he always blushed so beautifully at Nishinoya’s compliments?
“Definitely not unrequited.”
Asahi stepped into the gym, leaving Nishinoya faltering at the threshold. He could see Tsukishima and Yamaguchi giggling from inside. This was definitely some form of emotional bullying.
Nishinoya was afraid this day would come, and waiting for Kiyoko to finish her conversation with Takeda was pure torture. Nishinoya didn’t fear much, but he felt an overwhelming dread lie on his shoulders.
Takeda eventually walked away, and Kiyoko turned to face Nishinoya. “Nishinoya? Can I help you?”
Nishinoya took a deep breath and bowed until he was nearly at a right angle. “I apologize sincerely, Kiyoko!”
“You can stand up straight,” Kiyoko said. “I don’t even know what you’re apologizing for.”
“You are as merciful as ever,” Nishinoya said, straightening his posture. “I… will no longer be courting you.”
“Oh.”
“It’s not you. It’s…” Nishinoya averted his gaze. “It’s me .”
“Nishinoya…”
“I’m so sorry!” Nishinoya shouted. “I’ll forever hold you in my heart, but-“
“I don’t really care.”
If the declaration had come from any other girl, Nishinoya would claim that she was coping, and that she really did care. But coming from Kiyoko… he knew it wasn’t a bluff.
“Oh.”
“I’m sorry, that was a bit blunt,” Kiyoko said. “If you’d like to keep explaining yourself, I can listen.”
“I… think I like someone else,” Nishinoya said, taking advantage of the opportunity to vent. “There’s nothing wrong with you, though, I swear!”
“That’s okay. Your chances with this other person are probably higher,” Kiyoko admitted.
“Way to rub salt in the wound,” Nishinoya said, holding his chest dramatically. “But, it seemed a bit wrong to be fawning over you and someone else at the same time.”
“That’s very mature of you,” Kiyoko said, causing Nishinoya to beam. “This seems like the best thing for you.”
“I… I think so too,” Nishinoya agreed.
“A word of advice for you before you go,” Kiyoko said. “I think most people would prefer it if you toned down the act a little bit.”
Nishinoya tilted his head. “The act?”
“Worshiping me didn’t really help you out much, did it?” Kiyoko asked bluntly.
“I guess not.”
Kiyoko placed a hand on Nishinoya’s shoulder, and Nishinoya tried not to think about how that very action would have sent him into cardiac arrest a week ago. “I know you’re a good person, Nishinoya. You don’t need to put on any sort of chivalrous front in order for anyone to see that.”
Nishinoya nodded astutely. “Just as wise as always.”
“See, I’d prefer it if you just said ‘thank you’.”
“Oh, uh, thanks.”
Kiyoko smiled. “Better.”
“I really do mean it,” Nishinoya said quickly. “Thank you.”
“Of course, Nishinoya. Good luck.”
Nishinoya turned to exit, but glanced back at Kiyoko. “Can I ask for a quick favor, actually?”
“Sure, what is it?”
Nishinoya dropped to his knees, basically slamming his forehead against the ground. “In exchange for my surrender, would you please consider dating Tanaka?”
Nishinoya had given up his first true love. He had erased two years of progress for someone else purely on loose threads and potential hints. If things were right in the world, Tanaka would be given a chance.
“No.”
After a while of browsing Ukai’s stock and deciding he didn’t have the energy to try to scam Ukai, Nishinoya started to trail behind Tanaka instead.
“Hey, don’t get mad at me, but I overheard your conversation with Kiyoko,” Tanaka said, looking through the soft drinks in the fridge. “I didn’t mean to listen, I was just waiting for you to finish your conversation so we could walk here together.”
“Don’t worry about it,” Nishinoya said. “I mean, I would’ve told you anyway.”
“I figured,” Tanaka said, shrugging. “I thought I’d spare you the trouble.”
“Thanks, man.”
“Since I’ve done you that favor, how about you tell me who this new person is?” Tanaka asked, waggling his eyebrows.
“No fair!” Nishinoya protested. “You said you overheard my conversation, so you must’ve heard my last ditch effort to get Kiyoko to consider you!”
Tanaka winced, daintily resting the back of his hand on his forehead like a damsel in distress. “Don’t remind me of how quickly she declined!”
“You’re right,” Nishinoya said solemnly. “I’m sorry. I tried my best.”
Tanaka patted Nishinoya’s back. “And I appreciate it. And I would also appreciate it if you told me who this new mystery girl is.”
Nishinoya could feel his face heat up. “It’s not really that big of a deal…”
“Oh, please,” Tanaka said, putting his hands on his hips. “Not that big of a deal? You told Kiyoko you weren’t going to pursue her and you both agreed you have better chances with this other girl.”
“Any number is higher than zero,” Nishinoya said.
Tanaka sighed. “Is there any reason you don’t want to tell me? I mean, we’re bros, right?”
“We are!” Nishinoya quickly assured him. “I just… I don’t know if you’ll approve.”
“Know if I’ll approve…?” Tanaka repeated.
“Yeah,” Nishinoya said, his voice uncharacteristically quiet. “I mean, now that I think about it, I don’t think you’ll care but-”
“Yuu, you cannot date Saeko!” Tanaka shouted.
Nishinoya stared dumbfounded at Tanaka for a moment before disgust settled on his face. “Ew, it’s not Saeko! She’s like a sister to me!”
Tanaka sighed. “Thank goodness, man. You scared me for a minute there.”
“I can’t believe you thought it was Saeko ,” Nishinoya said. “Who do you take me for?”
“I don’t know! You were being all weird about it,” Tanaka said. “As long as it’s not Saeko, you know I’m chill with anyone.”
“Yeah, I should’ve known that,” Nishinoya said. He glanced around the crowded convenience store before asking, “Can I tell you outside?”
“For sure.” The pair made their way to the entrance, where Nishinoya slid open the door and immediately bumped into someone. Nishinoya started to fall, but the person he collided with caught him before he did.
“Nice receive!”
Nishinoya felt strong arms wrapping around his back, ensuring that he stayed in place.
Nishinoya glanced up to find Asahi, whose face was just as gorgeous as ever — although, plagued with a bit more worry than what was customary.
“Hello,” Nishinoya said.
“Hi,” Asahi responded.
“ Oh , I get it now!”
Nishinoya let his head drop, looking at a now upside-down Tanaka staring at him.
“Bro, I get what you were trying to tell me earlier,” Tanaka said.
“Oh, um, really?” Nishinoya eked out.
“You know, now that I’ve got it, I think I’ll go back inside and get a drink. No need to wait for me!” Tanaka turned to re-enter the store before pivoting again. “Sugawara, you should really come with me.”
“Wonderful idea!” Sugawara said, rushing next to Tanaka, ushering him into the store. Nishinoya hadn’t even noticed he was there, but it definitely explained the ‘nice receive’ comment.
The two scurried back into Ukai’s store, leaving Nishinoya and Asahi alone.
Nishinoya craned his neck back to look at Asahi again. “You know you don’t have to keep holding me here.”
Asahi’s face flushed a slight pink in embarrassment.
“Right! I’m sorry.”
“No need to apologize,” Nishinoya said, holding onto Asahi’s arms as Asahi gently righted him. Asahi loosened his grip, but Nishinoya held one of Asahi’s arms tighter before sliding his hand down and threading his fingers with Asahi’s. Nishinoya decided that, for Asahi’s sake, he would ignore how Asahi squeaked.
Nishinoya lightly tugged on their joined hands, leading Asahi down the street to their houses. “What were you even doing right in front of the door?”
“Avoiding Suga. You know how he gets when he wants something,” Asahi admitted.
Nishinoya laughed. “Oh, yeah, that’s a rough one.”
Asahi smiled. “I was evading his lunges at me when you walked through the door.”
“What did he even want from you?” Nishinoya asked, watching as panic flashed over Asahi’s face. He was so easy to read.
“It doesn’t really matter now,” Asahi stammered. “Do you know what does matter? Popsicles!” Asahi lifted his free arm to show a bag from Ukai’s store.
“Ooh!” Nishinoya said. “Asahi, did you get these just for me?”
Asahi released his hand from Nishinoya’s, and Nishinoya would’ve been mad if the underlying reason wasn’t to give him a popsicle. “I got one for Suga, but he declined.”
Nishinoya took the popsicle from Asahi, grinning as he inspected it. “You liar.”
“What? Liar? Me?” Asahi asked.
“Suga hates this flavor,” Nishinoya said, unwrapping his popsicle and gnawing on it, choosing to keep his hand closer to Asahi open.
“Maybe that’s why he declined.” Asahi stared at his own blue soda popsicle before gently brushing his hand against Nishinoya’s as they walked. “But maybe it was for you.”
Nishinoya smiled, taking Asahi’s hand movements as an invitation to grab his hand again. “Maybe I’d prefer that explanation.”
“Good to know,” Asahi said.
The pair then fell into a comfortable silence as they walked, Nishinoya swinging their conjoined hands back and forth. The evening air was crisp, and cicadas chirped peacefully.
“Do you remember the last time I bought you a popsicle?” Asahi asked.
“Yup.”
“When we were waiting in line, I wanted to ask you a question, but Ukai cut me off,” Asahi explained. “We were talking about how I’m cool and old, but that’s not the only way you would describe me.”
Nishinoya grinned. “So, you want to know how else I would describe you.”
“If you wouldn’t mind,” Asahi said.
Nishinoya thought for a moment. “Cool, old, tall, smart, brave-”
“I am not brave.”
“Um, excuse me. Did you want my opinion or not?”
“I do! Can you just… elaborate on that one?”
Nishinoya rolled his eyes. “You’re the saddest wet blanket I’ve ever met-” Asahi nodded in agreement- “but you don’t let it stop you. Yeah, you look like you’re gonna puke before every match, but you still play. Even after I disappointed you.”
“You didn’t-”
“You’re also really strong. Way too nice for your own good. Oh, also, super hot.”
Asahi was very obviously flustered. “I wouldn’t say all that…”
“Yeah, but I did,” Nishinoya said. “You asked for my opinion, I gave it. I’ll add that you’re not good at taking compliments.”
“I’ll agree with that one,” Asahi said.
“You should agree with the rest of them, too,” Nishinoya suggested. “I am a great judge of character, you know.”
Asahi chuckled. “So great that you’re the only person that doesn’t like Yamaguchi.”
“That’s why I’m a great judge of character. I’m the only one who sees through his act,” Nishinoya insisted. “Don’t trust him.”
“What did he even do? He was talking about you being single, right?”
“In a very evil way,” Nishinoya clarified. “He tricked me. Like, did you know Tsukishima and Yamaguchi were together?”
“No, I didn’t,” Asahi said. “It does make sense, though.”
“It definitely does,” Nishinoya agreed, “but they used my ignorance against me.”
“They were being a bit weird when I got there,” Asahi said. “I’m not sure I would say evil , though.”
“You have to trust me on that one,” Nishinoya said.
“Okay, then,” Asahi said. “He’s so evil.”
“You agreed a bit quickly, there.”
“What do you want from me?” Asahi asked. “You tell me to trust you and then critique me when I do. Maybe Yachi’s right and you are a bully.”
Nishinoya laughed. “You’re funny.”
Asahi remained quiet for a moment before saying, “Okay.”
“Okay?” Nishinoya repeated.
“You wanted me to admit that I’m funny,” Asahi said, shrugging.
Nishinoya smiled. “I was hoping for a bit more than ‘okay’.”
“You are so critical of me,” Asahi whined. “Am I not good enough for you?”
“I’m just strengthening your weaknesses,” Nishinoya said, speaking before he realized the true weight of his words. Didn’t Asahi say he was interested in someone whose strengths were his weaknesses? “Hey, Asahi?”
“Yeah?”
“How would you describe me?”
“Constantly energized, the most optimistic person I know, supportive, fearless, and I guess pretty cute.” Asahi’s voice trailed out near the end.
Nishinoya frowned. “You guess ?”
“Maybe I know.”
“Yeah, that’s what I thought.”
At that point, they had arrived at Asahi’s house. “I’ll see you tomorrow, Nishi.”
Asahi released his hold on Nishinoya’s hand, but Nishinoya tightened his. Nishinoya Yuu was not a coward, and regardless of how his heart felt like it was beating out of his chest, he wasn’t going to leave on an ambiguous note.
Asahi looked at Nishinoya inquisitively. “Is something wrong?”
“I’m not courting Kiyoko anymore.”
Asahi’s eyebrows shot up. “Oh, I… I’m sorry?”
Nishinoya shook his head. “Don’t apologize. It’s not your… oh, actually, it is your fault.”
“What?”
“But not in a bad way!” Nishinoya tried to course correct. “Like, in a super good and cool way.”
“I’m not following…” Asahi said.
Nishinoya exhaled. This wasn’t going how he wanted it to. Might as well just go for it. “Asahi, I realized that I like you .”
“Nishi…” Asahi said. “Are you… are you being serious?”
“Of course I am,” Nishinoya said. “I have never lied in my whole life.”
“So Suga didn’t put you up to this as some sick prank?”
Nishinoya smiled. “So, you like me, too?”
“ Yes , of course I do,” Asahi said. “You’re perfection incarnate.”
Nishinoya could feel his face heat up. “Well, you didn’t mention that in your first description of me.”
Asahi laughed. “Sorry, you’re right. I should’ve said it earlier.”
“Would’ve made my job a hell of a lot easier,” Nishinoya grumbled. “Do you know how hard it is to confess to someone?”
“Yes,” Asahi said. “I’ve been trying to muster up the courage to do it for two years now.”
“Two years?” Nishinoya gawked.
Asahi nodded. “Pretty much since the first time I saw you.”
“Man, you’re patient,” Nishinoya said.
Asahi shrugged. “I think it’s worth it.”
“Well, I can reward you for your wait,” Nishinoya said. “I do owe you, don’t I?”
Asahi flushed a gorgeous red. “I was really joking about that…”
“Anything you want.”
Asahi startled a bit at Nishinoya’s sincerity, but he tentatively placed a hand on Nishinoya’s face. Nishinoya leaned into the touch, maintaining eye contact with Asahi. Asahi slowly started to lean down, and Nishinoya raised up to his tippy toes to close the distance.
Nishinoya’s first kiss wasn’t perfect. His neck was craned awkwardly and his calves were already burning from practice, but the taste of popsicles, Asahi’s free arm wrapping around his waist, and the fact that he was kissing Asahi all made up for it.
Asahi pulled away, gasping for air. “Do you want to come inside?”
“Asahi, you sly dog! Take me out to dinner, first,” Nishinoya said.
“You’re right, it was foolish of me to think that my room would be more comfortable than my driveway,” Asahi teased.
Nishinoya rested his hands on Asahi’s chest. “It is a good idea, but it’s getting kinda late.”
Asahi laughed, and Nishinoya could feel the rumble in his chest. “Since when did you care about that sort of thing?”
“Ever since I found a reason to avoid getting grounded,” Nishinoya said. “You waited two years for me to figure this out, so you can wait a little longer.”
Asahi smiled and loosened his hold on Nishinoya’s waist. “I’d always wait for you.”
Nishinoya stuck out his tongue. “You’re so sappy, Asahi.”
“But you seem to like that.”
“Unfortunately, yes.”
“Unfortunately?” Asahi whined.
“Yup.” Nishinoya kissed Asahi’s cheek. “See ya tomorrow, Asahi.”
“Goodnight, Nishi.”
Nishinoya bolted up to Asahi’s classroom, contently waiting outside as his class finished.
“Hey, Nishinoya. What are you doing here?”
Nishinoya turned to face Sugawara and Daichi. “Hey, Suga. I’m waiting for Asahi!”
“You’ve been waiting for him for a while, right?” Daichi asked.
“Just a few minutes.”
“I think he meant months ,” Sugawara said. “Why do you keep coming to wait for Asahi?”
Nishinoya smiled. This time he knew his answer. “I like walking over to practice with Asahi.”
Both Sugawara and Daichi looked shocked. “Oh, you do?”
“It’s like how you two go to practice together every day,” Nishinoya said. “Right?”
Sugawara was just about to respond when Asahi stepped out of his classroom. “Oh, there you are, Nishi. I thought you abandoned me.”
“I would never !” Nishinoya said. “I was just keeping Daichi and Suga company.”
“Yeah, we were talking about you ,” Sugawara taunted, throwing an arm around Nishinoya’s shoulder. “Did you know Nishinoya likes walking to practice with you?”
“Really? I thought he was just making sure I went,” Asahi said.
“Maybe you should do something instead of making assumptions,” Daichi suggested.
“Yeah, Asahi, do something!” Nishinoya agreed.
“Look, even Noya thinks you should do something,” Sugawara said.
“Don’t let me down, Asahi,” Nishinoya said.
Asahi groaned. “You are all the worst.”
Nishinoya gasped. “That’s not what you said last night.”
“Excuse me?” Sugawara exclaimed.
Asahi covered Nishinoya’s mouth with his hand before he could say anything else incriminating. “Nothing!”
Daichi and Sugawara shared a glance. “So, Nishinoya asked you out, didn’t he?”
“Why are you assuming it wasn’t me?”
“Am I wrong?”
Asahi chose to remain silent. Nishinoya took the opportunity to wriggle out of Asahi’s grasp. “You’re not wrong.”
Sugawara smiled. “You owe me 1000 yen, Daichi.”
“I had faith in you, Asahi,” Daichi said, glaring as he pulled out his wallet.
“You bet on me?” Asahi asked.
“And I’d do it again,” Sugawara said, taking the money from Daichi. “Seriously, though, we’re happy for you two.”
“Thanks!” Nishinoya said. “You should think about what I told you before Asahi came out here, though. You know, about people who walk together to the gym.”
“Yeah, right,” Sugawara said. “Tsukishima and Yamaguchi also walk together.”
Nishinoya smirked. Maybe he was just as evil as Yamaguchi. “So, you would say your relationship with Daichi is like theirs?”
