The crab patterned lunchbox

Summary:

“ About five minutes later, there was a loud knock on the door, when both men turned their heads to look in the direction that the sound came from, Dazai smiled brightly as Kunikida looked confused and on edge at the sight of the gravity manipulator mafia executive.”

Or how Dazai forgetting his lunch and having his slug bring it to him, caused problems to arise.

Notes:

Kunichuuzai but I accidentally focused on kunichuu a bit too much, Oopsies.

Work Text:

It was a busy day in the agency, multiple cases that needed to be done, everyone working to their limits, an air of excitement flooding in as lunch hour approaches. As soon as the clock struck noon, nearly everyone rushed out, except for two people.

Kunikida and Dazai were the only ones in the office, it deathly quiet compared to before, the only sounds being of pen o paper and the clacking of a keyboard.

Dazai was laying on the couch, looking bored and opening his mouth to complain. However before he could get one word out, he was interrupted by a stern voice, “Dazai, why are you not at lunch?” Kunikida inquired, looking up from his work to look at his coworker who usually is the first out the door for lunch.

“I’m waiting for a slug to bring me my food!” Dazai cheerily said with a smirk. Kunikida just sighed at his own confusion and ignored the other male, going back to his work.

About five minutes later, there was a loud knock on the door, when both men turned their heads to look in the direction that the sound came from, Dazai smiled brightly as Kunikida looked confused and on edge at the sight of the gravity manipulator mafia executive.

Chuuya stood there, a scowl on his face and a crab patterned lunchbox in his hands, eyes scanning the office before they land on the lazy ex-mafia executive who is sprawled out on the couch.

He stalks over, lunchbox in hand. As he arrives to be standing right in front of Dazai, he kicks him in the leg. Hard.

Dazai cries out in protest, pouting as he whines, “a good dog isn’t supposed to attack it’s master, bad chibi”

Chuuya grits his teeth as his scowl deepens and his free fist raises, shaking it slightly in Dazai’s direction, spitting out, “who are you calling a dog, asshole?”

“Who else but my dog, of course? Listening to my commands” Dazai said with a smirk, infuriating Chuuya even more and making Kunikida question his life choices.

Kunikida watched for a moment before turning back to his work and trying to lose himself in it, attempting to ignore the other two.

“Listen here asshole, you are the one who left your lunch at home, you are the one that begged me to bring it to you. So, shut up and be thankful I decided to be nice and use a break I had in the day to come here and bring you this!” Chuuya scolds as he roughly shoved the lunchbox into his hands, leaning down and placing a soft peck on Dazai’s forehead.

Dazai was looking up at Chuuya with a large smile. However, something else caught Chuuya’s attention, the strict ideals glasses wearing guy stood up, mumbled something before leaving the office.

“I need to get back to work you waste of bandages, I’ll see you at home” Chuuya says distractedly, patting Dazai’s head before quickly leaving. He rushes through the halls, searching, until he found him.

Kunikida sat in an empty room, scribbling in his notebook and mumbling to himself, looking upset. It was all that was heard until the silence was broken, a voice slicing through the air like a sharp knife coming down and breaking the silent tension that started to build, “Dazai is quite the handful, huh?”

Kunikida looks up startled, looking around to find the short ginger leaning against the doorframe and staring at him with an unrecognizable look painted across his face. “I’m used to it, as infuriating as he can be, he is helpful when it counts” Kunikida mumbled as he looks back down at his notebook.

“Thank you,” Chuuya quietly says, causing Kunikida’s head to snap up in confusion as he looks at Chuuya in puzzlement, Chuuya slowly walks closer as he keeps softly speaking, “for putting up with him, I know from experience how he is as a partner. So, thank you…” Chuuya says with a gentle smile.

Kunikida looks on, jaw slack at this before he starts stumbling over his words, rambling on, “of course, it’s what work partners do for each other, of course, partners in general do that because they care, right?”

He stops at the sound of lighthearted laughter coming from the hat wearer, head tilted back as the melodic sounds escaped his lips, light from the nearby window shining in and hitting him just right, looking like an angel in those paintings.

A quiet gasp coming from Kunikida before he looks back down to his notebook and scribbling in it, hiding his face from view.

“Relax four eyes, I’m not going to hurt you, what are you writing there?” Chuuya says with a chuckle, looking down at Kunikida.

Kunikida quickly snaps his notebook shut as Chuuya tilts his head, “hey, no worries, that’s your private thing, if you don’t want to show me, I won’t force you too” Chuuya calmly states as he raises his hands up innocently. Kunikida looking perplexed causing a thought crosses his mind and before he can stop himself he blurts it out, “has… someone invaded your privacy like that?” He thought for a second as Kunikida avoided eye contact, “was it Dazai?” Chuuya inquired, sounding upset.

He didn’t need a response the silence was all he needed, he started grumbling to himself about how he was going to beat that waste of bandages to a pulp for invading another’s privacy. A hand grabbing onto his, stops him in his tracks as he looks back at the idealist, relaxing at the look of pain on his face. What the other muttered out next, utterly broke his heart at the way it sounded so small and broken, “please, don’t, I know it’s wrong but I don’t want to cause problems between you two, it’s not worth it…”

Chuuya moved closer, crouching down, gently placing his hand on Kunikida’s cheek, caressing it softly as he tilts his head up so they are looking at each other in the eyes as he softly assured the other, “it’s not causing problems, what he did is not okay, no matter what…” it was quiet for a few seconds as Chuuya contemplated his next words carefully, “you care for him deeply, don’t you?”

Kunikida’s eyes widen in surprise at the words, cheeks gaining a pink tint to them as he tries to look down again but is stopped by a hand on his chin, he looks up to see Chuuya, not upset but understanding and with a hint of happiness.

With a large smile on his face he simply states, “we need to have a talk.”

A week later, the door to the agency bursts open, an angry ginger standing there holding that crab patterned lunchbox, stalking over to Dazai’s desk and tossing the lunchbox into his arms, not even greeting him or showing any affection besides a mumbled out, “here you go, you shitty mackerel” before going over to the desk right across from his, going up to Kunikida and gently leaving a soft kiss on his forehead, arm across his shoulders as he looks down at what he is working on.

The only acknowledgment he gets from Kunikida is a mumbled and stressed sounding, “hello, Chuuya” before Chuuya dropped a protein bar on his desk, mumbling about how “he needs nutrition as he works and especially if he deals with the mackerel all day”

Both look up as Dazai whines about being left out, Chuuya and Kunikida look at each other before back at Dazai with unimpressed faces as he pouts. Chuuya walks over and gives him a light peck on the lips before swatting his hands away with a goodbye, leaving the agency with a smile, excited for dinner later that night.

Notes:

My first time writing this ship and a poly ship at that, I like how it turned out and how Kunikida and Chuuya are now suffering and working together against Dazai’s antics and behaviour.

Hope you enjoyed this fic and have a good morning/afternoon/night.
