Work Text:
As the snow starts to fall around Nevermore the campus is dying down. Students desperate for a break from the dorm life and craving the comfort of their homes. Filing into the car park or out to the bus stops, anxiously waiting to leave behind their studies for a few weeks.
Apart from Enid Sinclair.
Her and Wednesday's dorm room was in various stages of tidy. Enid's side it's usual clutterd mess, her boxing gloves thrown on the floor by her desk, clothes not put away from the laundry, various pairs of running shoes scatterd about. While Wednesday's typically bare side was getting emptier by the minute.
"Cara mia are you not going home for the holidays?" Wednesday asks, pausing cleaning her desk as she notcies that Enid hasn't packed a single thing for winter break. She hadn't even decorated her side of the room, something she'd been talking about doing for months now. No obnoxious lights, no wreath on the window, not even the mistletoe she'd been teasing Wednesday with since they started dating.
"Um nah Willa, Weems gave me permission to stay here" Enid is laying down on her bed, throwing a tennis ball up and down as Wednesday packed up her own side of the room. "My family's hard enough to deal with, during Christmas it just gets worse"
A few days ago she answered a call from a private number. Just after she got back from practice, slipping off her shoes as she said "hello?". It turned out to be her mum, screaming down the line about the cut contact and demanding she come home for Christmas. Enid didn't even speak, just hung up after a couple minutes and crawled back into bed. Pulling the covers over he head and waiting until Wednesday came home. Of course she instantly tried to make it better. Swore up and down she would kill her mum if she just asked, she'd do anything for Enid. Including murder.
"I see..." Wednesday thinks for a second before continuing. "forgive me if I am overstepping but would you like me to stay?"
"Don't you have your big Addams family reunion over Christmas?"
"Typically yes, however this year we are diluting the festivities". Instead of inviting every Addams to their house her parents decided on keeping it as immediate family, since a majority of the cousins are now in college like Wednesday they wouldn't be able to make it. "Besides, I wouldn't be able to concentrate if I knew you were here alone"
"Wednesday you really don't have to, I'm going to be training most of the time anyway" Enid sits up, placing the ball onto her night stand. Gesturing Wednesday to come closer so she can take her hand gently.
Wednesday presses a kiss to Enid's knuckles before looking back at her. "I want to"
"If youre sure Willa" Enid says softly a slight smile spreading across her face as Wednesday nods.
"I will go and speak to Weems then"
"She might not let you" there's an air of doubt in Enid's voice. She had to explain her situation to Weems for the special permission. Bordering on tears as she begged. Only certain people got to stay on campus over breaks, Wednesday wouldn't fall into that.
"She knows my mother, which means she knows Addams don't back down" Wednesday puts on her shoes and grabs her jacket before heading for the door. "I'll figure it out" she calls behind her before leaving. Making her way through the freezing campus to Weems office. Face painted with determination.
After barrelling back into the room, Enid figured out the meeting didn't go quite to plan. Wednesday is grabbing her keys before moving to head back out. Enid frantically trying to keep her in the dorm.
"Wednesday you can't key Weems car because she said no!" Enid tries to grab the keys from her hand but fails. Wednesday stepping to the side and dodging her.
"If I give up now she will think I'll accept no as an answer" Enid stands infront of the door, blocking her from leaving. "And I will not". Wednesday's brow is furrowed, her fist tight by her sides with her keys poking out one of her fingers. This wasn't her first rodeo.
"Willa, baby, its okay its only like three weeks I'll survive" Enid wraps her arms around Wednesday's shoulders, holding her in place. "look its really sweet that you're willing to commit crimes for me but you have to get going eventually, everyone else has left"
Their dorm block had been empty for a few days. The quiet was nice, like it was just the two of them there because well it was. Wednesday was pushing it off as much as possible before her parents sent Lurch to come get her. Lying about her car needing work, she couldn't find a really important notebook, it was too icy to drive. Trying to spend as much time with Enid before the break. But time was running out and tomorrow she would be hours away from the only person who she wanted to be around.
Wednesday looks up at her through her eyelashes after a minute. Knowing its one of Enid's weaknesses. "Could you do me a favour cara mia?"
Enid looks sceptical but agrees "depends because I am not going to jail and Im not letting you go to jail either"
"Would you get me a tea?" Wednesday breaks from her grasp. Showing Enid she never really had a hold on her in the first place. Moving over to her bag to get her purse "feel free to get yourself anything, like that so called coffee thats practically a milkshake you love so much" Enid nods but once she puts on her hoodie she holds her hand out. Wednesday places her purse in it as Enid raises an eyebrow.
"Keys" Wednesday rolls her eyes but places the keys into her hand. "Knife" groaning she gets the pocket knife sitting in her nightstand and hands it over aswell. "Good girl" Enid kisses the top of her head, placing Wednesday's belongings onto the top of her closet. Where she can't reach.
"That's just childish" Wednesday says annoyed.
Enid slips on her sneakers with a smile. "You can have them back later". Moving to kiss Wednesday quickly before leaving for the Weathervane.
The walk was nice. Cold, but nice. Thankfully since she started working weekends with Tyler she knew a short cut now. Enid wasn't going home after college, saving up for an apartment once her degree was finished. It was going well, she made good tips because of how nice she was to everyone. Plus Wednesday would always slip a ridiculous amount into the jar when Enid was working. She would act like it wasn't her of course but who else tips $50 to $100 for a tea?
Once she steps into the warm cafe a shiver runs up her spine. Walking over to the counter she smiles at Tyler. "Hey Ty, large earl gray and a" looking over the menu she can't decide what to get. Typically she's an ice coffee girl but it's below freezing outside and she'd like to live to see the new year.
"Caramel macchiato?" Tyler suggests, starting on Wednesday's tea.
"Yeah sure" looking over at the pastries on display Enid spots some gingerbread men. Wednesday hated sweets but biscuits were usally fine, no chocolate and hardly any icing. It would be fine, plus it was Christmas time so it was essential. "can I get two of the little gingerbread guys aswell?"
"Sure" Tyler gabs two of them from the display case and places them into a paper bag. Putting it onto the counter before making Enid's coffee.
"They're so cute"
"Thanks, spent all morning on them" he turns his back to her. Enid taps her fingers off her thigh as she looks around. It was pretty dead today, just a mum and her daughter sitting in the booth furthest from the door. It made Enid's heart ache slightly, watching how she smiled at her kid. "you going home for the holidays? You aren't on the rota" Tyler asks over his shoulder while steaming the milk. Snapping her attention back to him.
"Nah I'm staying at Nevermore, Wednesday's leaving though" Enid tries to hide the sadness in her voice. She didn't want to make Wednesday feel guilty, didn't want to pity from the fact her family was dysfunctional. Planning on spending her time in the gym, taking advantage of the lack of people hogging the machines.
Her new years resolution was to get back into boxing, it might have something to do with the way Wednesday looked at her when her lip was split. How she practically jumped on her once they made it made to their room. But she wouldn't admit it if anyone asked.
"Aw man her orders the easiest one aswell" He slots the drinks into a holder and places them on the counter next to the bag.
She pays with Wednesday's card, knowing there's no point in arguing with her over who pays. But pulls out a 20 dollar bill from her pocket slipping it into Tyler's hand.
"Enid you don't have to"
"Think of it like a Christmas present" she grabs the stuff and smiles at him "see you later, text me if any shifts pop up". Tyler waves at her as she walks out. Jaw clenching as the cold air runs up her back.
When Enid returns she nearly drops the drinks when she sees the room. Wednesday's standing in the middle of it, holding a gift box. Having put white fairylights lights on her side and colourful ones on Enid's, a small pink Christmas tree sitting on her desk aswell. A matching black one on Wednesday's side.
"Willa-"
Wednesday cuts her off "I'm aware your family are horrible, but I'm also aware you really do love christmas despite the fact you've been acting like it isnt coming."
Enid steps into the room and puts the drinks and bag onto her desk before walking over to Wednesday. Looking down at the box in her hands. "We said no gifts" it's a plain black box with pastel pink ribbion keeping the lid on.
"I said you didn't have to get me a gift" Wednesday protests, placing the box in Enid's hands. "Besides it's only a small one"
She sits on her bed as she unwraps the bow. Slowly opening the top of the box and peaking inside. A pink love heart jelly cat staring back at her. Practically screaming as she takes it out as she looks at Wednesday.
"Do you like it?" Wednesday's fiddling with the sleeves of her sweater as she watches Enid's reaction. "The bookstore I go to stocks them, it reminded me of you"
The thought of Wednesday walking up to the counter holding the bright pink plushie made Enid blush slightly. The fact she saw this and knew she would like it. Wednesday Addams was a big softie, even if it was only for her.
"I fucking love it". Enid notcies a small note sitting in the bottom of the box, taking it out and reading over it. The paper feels nice, thick. It's handwritten Wednesday's handwriting was something Enid could read forever, the way the letters loop it's like art.
'Enid Sinclair,
I didn't think I'd ever be writing something like this but here I am. Becoming one of those love struck idiots I have spent years looking down upon. You have been the most incredible part of my year, the only person I have wanted to be with every minute of every day. From the moment I wake up until my eyes close for the night I am filled with thoughts of you.
I adore you in every aspect of the word. I fear when I leave for these three weeks my heart will stop until we are reunited. The warmth of your touch is the place I am honored to call home and I will wait with baited breath until I can return. You are the kindest person I know and I am the luckiest girl in the world to get to call you mine.
I find myself relating to the character from your favourite Christmas film, you could say my heart grew three sizes when I met you and I think it grows a little more each day I spend with you.
Merry Christmas cara mia.
Forever yours,
Wednesday Addams'
"God Willa" Enid wipes the tears forming in the corner of her eyes, gently placing the note on her nightstand. Making a mental note to pick up a frame for it. Before sticking her arms out. Pulling Wedensday in for a tight hug. "You're so cute"
"Don't tell anyone" They just stay there for a minute, Wedensday running her fingers through Enid's hair until she speaks up.
"Okay so I did actually get you something"
"Enid" Wednesday pulls back to look at her with a raised eyebrow.
"I know but you broke the rule aswell" Enid retorts making Wednesday sighs as she watches her reach for the gift. Sitting in the drawer of her nightstand.
When Wednesday takes it she can see how anxious Enid is. Leg bounding as she unwraps it. Wednesday smiles softly as she realises what it is. A photo frame with a Polaroid of the two of them inside, Enid's arm wrapped around Wednesday's shoulders while Yoko took the picture. It was at the last party Bianca threw before she left for Christmas. The slightest smile on Wednesday's lips as she looked up at Enid. Along with pressed flowers between the glass that Enid had bought for her to celebrate her newest book. Black roses and babies breath.
"I know it's not much and I really wish I could've gotten you-"
Wednesday cuts her off. "It's perfect". She places the frame onto Enid's nightstand before moving closer to her. Leaning down to fill the tiny amount of space left between them. "Look up"
Enid tilts her head back, seeing the mistletoe half hazardly taped onto the celing, smiling as she looks back at Wednesday. "How did you reach that?"
"A desk chair and impeccable balance"
Enid can't help her smile as they inch closer to each other. When Wednesday kisses her its like they were made for this. To be intertwined. Enid's hands finding their way onto her waist and pulling her closer. Until Wednesday is straddling her lap. Enid runs her hands up her back, working her way under Wednesday's sweater.
She pulls away looking down at Enid. "Would you like to come with me for Christmas?"
Enid looks confused. Pausing her hands and moving them flat against Wednesday's skin. "What?"
"You could spend it with my family, if you want to of course" there's a hint of uncertainty in her voice. She didn't know how Enid was going to react. Maybe it was too fast. Maybe she really didn't want to celebrate this year.
"Like meet your parents?"
"Yes" Wednesday opens her mouth to add something along the lines of 'no pressure' but Enid speaks before she can.
"I'd love to"
Wednesday kisses her quickly. "I love you"
"I love you too" Enid starts to move her hands again, stopping on the clasp of Wednesday's bra. "I'm dying to get you out of this sweater tho"
"As nice as that sounds" Wednesday pulls back, standing up. Ignoring Enid's whine as she straightens out her outfit. "You have to pack"
She pouts as Wednesday looks under her bed, pulling out her baby pink suitcase. "Can we put on elf atleast?"
Wedensday groans. She really did hate christmas films. "What about the christmas carol"
Enid stands up, wrapping her arms around Wednesday's shoulders. Trying her luck. "The muppets christmas carol?"
"Fine" she says bluntly, the slightest smile creeping onto her lips as Enid kisses her forehead. "Let's get you packed"
"Then we can?"
"Then you can get the second part of your present" Enid raises an eyebrow watching Wednesday pull her skirt up, what Enid had assumed was tights was really thigh highs. Seeing a flash of the new lignere Wednesday had picked out. It was red, like super deep red almost black. And she was desperate to touch it. As she reaches a hand out Wednesday drops the fabric. Gently smacking away Enid's hand. "Pack first."
"Yes ma'am"
Sitting on her dorm room floor with Wednesday, eating gingerbread men and packing as quick as possible, she thinks maybe christmas won't be so bad this year. She can make her own traditions, chose her own family. Starting with the girl who's her sitting across from her. Trying to make the five hoodies Enid's insisted she needs, alongside her new jellycat, fit into her suitcase.
"We can leave tomorrow morning if you're comfortable with that" Wednesday says finally zipping up the suitcase and standing it upright. The sun starting to set outside painting the sky pink.
Enid stands up and stretches out her shoulders, rolling her neck aswell. "Sure Willa" she pauses, watching Wednesday struggle to lift the suitcase. Smiling slightly as she takes it from her hands, moving it effortlessly to the door next to Wednesday's. "can I-"
"No you can't drive" Enid pouts. "Cara mia no, you're horrendous". It's true she really was.
"That light post came out of no where!" The last time she went out in her car she dented her bumper. It's still like that, she refused to let Wednesday pay for it. Insisting she'll fix it soon. We'll she'll fix it eventually.
Wednesday rubs her forehead "Light posts can't move"
Enid chuckles as she moves back over to her, arms working their way around her shoulders and pulling Wednesday in for a hug. "Fineeeeee"
"Can I take you out for dinner?" Wednesday asks as her head rests on Enid's chest.
Enid kisses the top of her head. "How about we start with dessert" it makes Wednesday look up at her confused. Only understanding once Enid winks at her with a smile.
"Oh" a slight tint of red spreads across her cheeks. "I'm interested in that"
Enid grabs her hand pulling her down onto her sheets. Wednesday straddling her as she sits down. Starting to kiss down her jaw and neck. The sunset outside illuminating the side of Wednesday's face is a way Enid could stare at forever.
Tomorrow she'll be sitting passenger princess singing Christmas songs on the way to the Addams home. Smiling at the girl sitting next to her as it sets it.
She can chose her own family.
