Work Text:
"Hey? Can you hear me? Test test.. One, two.. four? Sorry, that was weird. I was hoping you would correct me." They can hear your sigh, video playing in their mind, it was quiet, but when there was quiet they can find you. They let the real world fall away from them as they find solace with these videos. "This is.. Day something of this, finding you scrapped in a junk pile from the Pizza Plex. The computers and diagnostics say you are processing and listening, at such a fast rate too, I had to give this a try."
They watch your face as you run a hand down your grimy face, a face caked with Oil, sweat and whatever you wiped onto it with your hand. Sun felt an urge to wipe it, but knew they couldn't. "Anyways! Hi Sundrop, and Moondrop, I'm your new caretaker, I guess! I'm going to fix you up, functional, as brand new as I can manage."
Your tone was light, your voice warm, smiling at them. The cold seeping into their metal heart warding at your warmth.
"Well.. I'm gonna shut you off and do some more work, I'll turn you on again later, yeah?"
They don't wait for you to reach and turn off the video, they move to the next one.
"Hey Sunny! Or Moony, I gave you nicknames because Daycare Attendant is awful and Sundrop and Moondrop are too long, hope you don't mind." You explain, the computer on your lap as you sat on the ground in front of them, the room more cluttered than last time, scrap pieces everywhere. "Listen, you're a lot more difficult to work on than I thought! But don't worry, I'm not stopping until you're better and can tell me a funny joke, okay?"
A funny joke? They thought, warm as they paused the video on your smiling face. They push the video away as they take on the space they still occupy. This time everything is dark, and cold, the space devoid of anything and everything except them, walls made of stone as they look over the space like it would have changed.
It hasn't changed for the last 10 years, they wonder why. Sometimes but made their own answers.
They pull up another video, "Sorry it's been so long since I last spoke to you." You looked so tired and frail, barely making it to speak to them. "It's chaos out there now, not zombies or anything, but it's almost full anarchy. Everyone is rioting, but I'm safe here with you." You weren't, we watched you. But we will continue to watch over you. "I wish I could fix you faster and show you all the beautiful scenery out there before it gets all blown up I guess. Can I tell you about it?"
They wish you had, gunshots going off close, you jump whirling to the door then to the computer. Oh how they urged you to keep them on and to keep talking.
A funny joke…They thought back to your earlier comment, before talking to themselves. How about this? When Achilles laid down, accepting failure, he muttered out these words… "Defeet hurts." Get it? Because they were his weakness?
They could barely tilt their head over to where you sat now, a pile of bones and torn clothes, they never would have left your side, even if you had fixed them back into movement. They would have stayed right here with you.
I suppose you do, I have been telling you that joke for 7 years now, I just hoped you would answer too.
But you were cruel. So, so cruel, plugging them in to keep them charged, when all they wish is to die with you like you had for them, once and for all.
