CHAPTER 1 : BOARDING
”Ok!Is that everything?”Fukuzawa asks, as he loads the last of the luggage onto one of the cars.”Yup,I think that’s it!”Naomi yells as she locks the Ada office doors and walks towards fukuzawa to hand him the keys.As he grabs the keys he does a head count.The coworkers are split into two groups.Group 1 being fukuzawa, Naomi,yosano, and tanizaki.With group two holding dazai,atsushi,kunikida,kenji and ranpo.”Wait…Where’s ranpo?!”. They all turn their heads and look around as they try to spot Ranpo.”He probably got lost again.”dazai says shrugging.
Just the day before when the week long trip was announced ranpo had jumped up at the statement saying something about being ’right back’ and how he just had the ‘greatest idea’ since then no one has seen or heard from him.While it’s pretty common for ranpo to randomly run out while screaming an abrupt and almost gibberish tangent,it was somewhat odd he was late for the trip to the port (despite his horrible sense of direction).
But just as they we’re getting ready to call him to see if he actually did get lost (or something else)they could see the man running down the street dragging along an abnormally large suitcase and duffel bag.”FHEW!Thanks for not leaving me guys!”,ranpo grinned as he handed his luggage to atsushi to put in the trunk of the second car and making sure to make tell him to be careful with the great detectives stuff.”Where have you been and what’s with the suitcase?”kunikida pointed out as kenji walked over to help a struggling atsushi load the baggage in the car.
”And why’s it so heavy?!”kunikida questioned.Ranpo only put his hands on his hips and stared at kunikida as he said “I got lost and I obviously need a lot of room for all my snacks!”ranpo pouted like it was the most obvious thing in the world.Which he was probably right about since it’s ranpo but that doesn’t make it any less annoying to kunikida, seeing as he just rolls his eyes and goes to sit in the drivers seat of his groups car and instead is met with dazai in his spot ready to drive off.
”OH NO YOU DON’T!” Kunikida furiously says while dragging dazai out by his neck.After throwing out the suicidal maniac into the back middle seat (atsushi already by in the window seat on the far right) he hops in the front and puts on his seat belt.Ranpo and kenji hop in their respective spots (kenji in the back just in case dazai tries to find a way to off him self while heading there).
After a long battle between dazai and kunikida,trying to get him to put the seatbelt on he gives up and they start heading towards the port.
The day before
After the announcement of a vacation on a cruise for a week ranpo thought about Poe and how he would probably enjoy being on a trip since he’s been spending most of his free time inside.He listened to the president go into detail about the trip and times while he thought about how he would get Poe to go with them after he heard there were no extra tickets and no plus ones (mainly directed at dazai and atsushi)
Thats when it hit him! His great idea of sneaking his ‘rival’ onto the trip(though he would have to figure out what to do about Karl).But,that was for later right now he had to share his idea with Poe!So once fukuzawa finished up his briefing on the trip he bolted out the door while quickly uttering a messy explanation.
By some spout of luck he made it to poes home without getting lost.He quickly got out his spare key (that he may or may not have stolen) and entered the authors house. He was immediately greeted by an enthusiastic raccoon and half asleep Poe sitting up from the couch.He proceeded to walk over to Poe and plop down on his couch where the writer previously decided to take a nap.
”Hello dear,ranpo” Poe yawned whilst rubbing his eyes and sitting up more.”Poe guess what!” ranpo excitedly exclaimed.” Is….something wrong?”Poe asked worry slowly spreading upon his face.”No,silly!The boss just told us we’re going out on the sea tomorrow and we’ll be taking a week long break!”.
The worry from earlier quickly dispersed at the statement as a soft smile replaced it “That’s great dear, it’s very generous of fukuzawa to free you of you duties and plan a relaxing trip for you all.When will you be departing,I can take you if you like?”.Ranpo shook his head at the offer “I want you to come with us ed!”
Poe sat shocked at the idea, not after long Poe began to speak.”B-but it’s a trip for you and your companions!I-I couldn’t POSSIBLY join you,and besides what about Karl h-he is DEATHLY afraid of the sea I-we wouldn’t want to put him through that!”Poe tried to reason but ranpo had already thought about all of this and he was even able to find something for Karl while heading to poes apartment.
”Don’t worry Poe I already have a plan for all of that it’ll be fine!”
“Even Karl?”
“Even Karl!”
“Now c’mon let’s start packing!”
That morning
“Are you sure about this ranpo?”poe said sheepishly.He was really REALLY hoping he said he wasn’t. “Of course I am just curl up and lay in the Suitcase,I promise I won’t let anything bad happen!”Ranpo said dutifully sticking out his pinky and putting his other arm behind his back.they had already dropped of Karl to a pet hotel a bit of a ways away from poes house and all that had to be done was to get Poe in position and to get to the Ada office building.
Poe was starting to feel sick at the thought but after a bit of thought, promises of comfort, and being let out if it got too much he got in.Before zipping off the bag though ranpo made sure to give Poe a tight squeeze on his hand. Helping Poe to calm down.he made sure there was enough space from the zipper for Poe to breathe and rolled the luggage to the elevator and out the building into a cab(putting the suitcase next to him in the back).
Once they reached the building ranpo carefully ran and made his way over to the rest of the Ada.It looked like they were just about to go.He makes sure to warn atsushi to be careful not to throw his bags or be rough when loading it.Close behind his warning to atsushi kunikida had began interrogating him so he told a simple yet believable lie to get the blonde man off his back.After tussling with dazai they were off.
Once they reached the port ranpo excused himself to the bathroom bringing his bags saying “He didn’t want something to happen to it and would rather take it with him since it’ll be quick”After making sure the cost was clear he opened the bag.”Poe how are you holding up?”he asked warily worried that Poe had passed out due to him not opening the zipper enough or that he had a panic attack or some other horrible accident.
Poe slowly peaked out and looked around after confirming that the coast was clear he opened the flap fully and stretched while getting out the bag.Ranpo let out a sigh of relief and held Poe in a loose hug for a few seconds before backing up.”I thought I’d let you know we made it to the port and even though the drive was no more than thirty minutes I thought it was probably really uncomfortable laying cramped like that for so long.I tried to make sure we were as careful as possible so I’m sorry if it was bumpy”ranpo apologized while looking down.
Poe smiled at the fact that ranpo was worried about him and he felt during the drive.Edgar hesitantly raised his hand to the latters and lifted it enough for him to look up at his face.letting out a smile he reassured ranpo that he was fine and that he’s ok. His attempt to reassure ranpo of his perfectly fine condition seemed to work because the boy.grinned and let out a little laugh.
”Thanks,ed.You should probably get back in though we’ve been in here for a bit already,don’t want them getting suspicious do we?”Ranpo helped Poe back in headed back to the group to wait in line to check through and into the rooms.
