Absence Makes the Heart Grow

Summary:

Mammon makes friends while his brothers get jealous that he's no longer around.

(AKA, an addition to the depressing, Mammon-centric stories floating around Tumblr and AO3)

(Inspired by the concept of Kotoura-san)

Notes:

I haven't written in a long while, but this is just the start of a tomb I've built for myself.

Will have slow updates, but updates nonetheless <3

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Chapter Text

His legs swung back and forth in time to the soft pitter-patter of rain falling around him. White strands of hair held little droplets of crystals that drooped against his skin and onto his uniform. The rooftop of RAD was always his go-to place.

Another one of those days. Days where he’d felt like complete and utter shit. That morning, Mammon awoke with a splitting headache and a sunken feeling in his chest. It didn’t help that none of his brothers seemed to want to talk to him either, so he wasn’t able to get any advice on his growing pains. He hoped the small sip of water he drank was enough to quell whatever he was experiencing.

He even built up the courage to ask if the others wanted to walk to school with him for once, but he was met with sneers of disgust.

“Ugh, are you gonna try to pickpocket me or something?”

“Sorry Mammon, I have to go early for practice.”

“Who’d want to walk with you, stupid Mammon.”

At RAD, he saw Lucifer and tried to talk to him. He caught him down a hallway and actively tried to wave him down, hoping to have a conversation with the eldest. Their eyes met, but Lucifer’s cold gaze promptly ignored him. He was left alone after he followed Diavolo into the student council room.

Later during lunchtime, he spotted Satan sitting with his friends at a table. Again, hoping for a conversation with a brother of his, he made his way to the vacant seat next to him when a succubus managed to steal it first. In a fit of annoyance, Mammon asked her to scooch her ass over. When she pretended not to hear him, he said it louder, causing stray glances from others his way. That seemed to get his brother’s attention, but not the kind Mammon wanted. Instead, Satan glared at him, sending a message only he could understand.

‘Just leave already.’

The rain helped calm his emotions back into their original order of tranquility.

Club activities were taking place as he could hear other demons laughing together. He glanced down, the ground littered with ant-like bodies. So small they looked when he was up there. But what he was most interested in was the ground right below him. He could imagine the speed he’d throw himself at, his destination getting closer and closer to where he could count the bundled sediments of dirt, only to end with him closing his eyes and feeling the sudden impact of darkness as his body melted into his sins.

Mammon looked at the clouded sky.

“Damn I’m lonely.”

“Hi Lonely, I’m Amy!”

Mammon jumped up in surprise at the sudden reply, turning to see a female student with short, black hair. Strangely enough, the black hues seemed to be accentuated with purple reflections from the rain. Her friendly eyes held interest and curiosity as she looked over Mammon’s form.

“Shit, don’t just pop outta nowhere like that!” Mammon had his hand over his heart as she gave a hearty laugh.

“Well it’s your fault you failed to notice me.” She hopped up to the ledge he was sitting on, balancing on it like a tightrope artist. “So what’s the infamous second-born doing up here anyways?”

He stumbled for words as her smile widened. “Could it be that you were going to...”

She neared closer to him. “... end your life?”

His eyes widened.

“I mean, what else would you be doing up here besides contemplating suicide? Cuz I have NEVER seen you around during club hours!” She spun around dangerously close to the edge.

“The hell! I most definitely have always been here since forever! And what kinda person says that the rooftop is only for ‘that’? What are ya, an idiot?” Mammon shrugged his arms up, feeling tense at her choice of words. Who was this chick?

She stared even harder at him, a lump forming in his chest. Why was he acting like he just got caught doing something he shouldn’t be doing? It wasn't like any of his brothers were waiting for him at home or that he was supposed to be somewhere other than here. It was almost as if she saw right through him.

“Maybe I am, but hey! If you’re going to throw your life away like that, why don’t you join my club!”

Her suggestion sounded more like a command. Join her club? Really? The GREAT Mammon joining a dumb club? Seriously, that sounded so boring and-

-and she was already dragging him towards the door back inside. O-Oh well, in that case, he might as well see through all this trouble! Besides, he could easily overpower her if she tried anything funny.

It was weird to have some lower demon basically kidnap him and take him to a classroom he’d never seen before. It was located at the very end of the first floor, so the fast descent down the flights of stairs was not something Mammon enjoyed doing.

Once they reached the place, the lower demon opened the sliding door and abruptly chucked Mammon inside like a bowling ball. His shriek echoed down the hall on deaf ears as he rolled into the wall face first.

He leaned down and cupped his nose in pain, tears threatening his eyes. “Hey! What the fuck-” Suddenly, a pair of strong arms grabbed his shoulders and lifted him up into a chair, plopping him down with a soft ‘poomf’. The demon had longer blonde hair that was tied back, his piercing eyes reminding him of Lucifer.

The female brushed her hair behind her ear, a smirk on her face. “We welcome you, Mammon the second-born, to our Omniscient Club! As said prior, I’m Amy,” she gestured to the guy behind him, “And this is Saleos!”

What in Diavolo’s name did he get himself into?
