The Debate

Summary:

"So, Count," Anakin begins.

Obi-Wan groans. "Anakin, now is not the time."

"The time for what?"

"The time, Count, to use what Obi-Wan taught me and discuss a cause that is very important to me."

"Oh, is this time for you to gush about your precious Republic?"

"Ew, no. The Senate's useless and the Chancellor's a creep who tried to befriend a nine year old. I'm talking about droid rights."

Work Text:

Obi-Wan is having a wonderful day. He's now captured by pirates and stuck in a cell with Anakin and Dooku. He has a bad feeling about this.

"So, Count," Anakin begins.

Obi-Wan groans. "Anakin, now is not the time."

"The time for what?" Oh, Dooku is going to regret that question.

"The time, Count, to use what Obi-Wan taught me and discuss a cause that is very important to me."

"Oh, is this time for you to gush about your precious Republic?"

Anakin wrinkles his nose. "Ew, no. The Senate's useless and the Chancellor's a creep who tried to befriend a nine year old. I'm talking about droid rights."

Looking at Dooku's face, Anakin might just have suggested he was about to say the pirates were taking them on a vacation.

Obi-Wan sighs and gives up. Anakin has been wanting to have this conversation with Dooku since Geonosis, and now they're here in a cell with nothing else to do. When Anakin sets his mind to something, there's not getting him to give up on it. This is about to get even worse. Obi-Wan decides to attempt to tune them out whatever Anakin is talking about, or the Count's stunned but vehement protests. He doubts Dooku was planning on discussing this with anyone, much less the Hero With No Fear.

Clearly, he doesn't know Anakin.

Obi-Wan hates this. They have been in here for hours, and Anakin is not done yet. It's terrifying. He didn't realize anyone cared this much about droid rights. He doubts even droids could argue it this well, either. If he went to the battle droids with this speech, Dooku would have a mutiny on his hands.

The Count is wavering. Obi-Wan can only watch in shock. Dooku has stopped arguing and is starting to listen to what Anakin is saying.

Obi-Wan can not believe this.

They should have tried to escape at least five times by now, even tied together as they are. Anakin just won't shut up.

Obi-Wan didn't think Anakin was listening to him when he taught him the importance of debating. But he definitely sees his strategies, just devoted to a subject Obi-Wan has never attempted to use it on.

How long has Anakin been preparing this speech?

By the time the Republic, led by Jar Jar Binks of all people and somehow victorious over the pirates, Anakin is finally wrapping up. The Count and Obi-Wan have done nothing but listen to him. Some pirates, too.

Dooku is delivered into Republic hands.

"...and I will hand over control of the droid armies to Jedi Knight Anakin Skywalker."

Obi-Wan almost laughs at the Chancellor's expression. "What?" the man asks. More like demands. He's acting rather strangely.

"I trust him with the droids more than anyone else," Dooku explains, and the two share a conspiratual grin. Obi-Wan thought he was past being surprised, but...

"I'll be going, then, Your Excellency," Anakin grins and walks out. "I need to draft a liberation speech to give to the droids." Palpatine is gaping.

"Anakin?" Obi-Wan calls. Anakin turns back. "Try to keep it under an hour this time."

Anakin gives him a sarcastic salute and walks out.

Notes:

Not pictured here but Anakin totally talks Palpatine's ear off about clone rights, too.
