Falling

Summary:

Febuwhump 2022 Day 2: Failed Rescue

She was too late.

Work Text:

The sky was red. And the air was burning.

The comet was cutting through the clouds with the accuracy of the sharpest blade and fueling whichever airships were intact to torch the earth below them.

It should have been loud.

(It was at the beginning.)

There should have been the creaking of metal and the sound of explosions as engines ignited and airships rammed into each other. The roaring of flames and the roaring of wind as it whipped past her should have been deafening.

She couldn’t hear it.

She couldn’t even feel it.

Everything was being drowned out but a faint shrieking that she would later realize that came from her. She couldn’t feel anything but the rough bite of rope being twisted in her bloodied hands and the thundering of her heart.

The world was burning around her and she couldn’t see any of it. But her world was burning and she couldn’t look away.

All she could see were the figures dangling from the side of the airship.

All she could see was the line of comet powered fire shooting in their direction.

All she could see was the falling.

And the falling.

And the falling.

She was too late.
