In the last few months of the five-year-mission, Jim reconnects with his old flame, Areel Shaw. Spock doesn't know it was never meant to be anything but casual. Devastated and overwhelmed by his unrequited feelings, Spock devotes himself to being the best friend he can possibly be to Jim. At least until the mission ends... after that, he can run home to Vulcan and purge himself of the pain that emotional attachment brings for good.
