“And do you trust him?” he asked.
The entire room seemed to quiet down a little.
Luffy turned his head toward Zoro, surprised by the tone. Kid also glanced from one to the other, as if he'd noticed something in the question that didn't quite fit with the comedic atmosphere they'd been in just two seconds ago.
Law held Zoro's gaze.
There it was again, that quality of his, the one that sometimes made him the only one in the group with whom you truly didn't need to repeat anything. Kid and Luffy wanted the story, the format, the anecdote, the spectacle of surprise. Zoro wanted to know just one thing, something that, for him, mattered more than all the others.
Trust.
Loyalty.
The kind of foundation on which they had both spent years holding up half the world without saying much about it.
Law didn't hesitate.
“Yes.”
The answer came out completely. Immediately.
Zoro didn't look away immediately. He lingered for another second, gauging something on Law's face, until finally he nodded just once, at the very least, and picked up the glass again.
