At this, Frank’s frown deepens before widening into a frustrated half smile. “Uh, yes we are? We’ve been dating for nine months?”

They spend most of the day together; ostensibly talking strategy, but you see the way their touches linger. Even the way they look at each other like they’re the only two people in the world, as though everything else is just background noise.
But as the days pass, you realise something. When she’s not watching Quaritch with those bright, lamp-like eyes, she’s watching you.

And yeah, maybe the ring on his finger sort of burned when he looked at her sometimes, even though it was just for show, now.
It was just easier to let her keep thinking he was still married to Abby. Safer.
It raised less eyebrows about the nature of their friendship when the ring stayed on while he was at work, the weight on his finger reminding him not to say or do anything stupid.
It also made it a little less creepy when the pet names started slipping out.

Bob didn’t move for a moment. His dark eyes were fixed on the floor, on the crack between the elevator and the floor to her room. On the void between, tiny and endless, a crack of pitch blackness in the building that eyes never saw and a finger couldn’t fit into, but a void all the same. “Do you… want to talk about that?” he asked, his voice quiet and low and cautious.

Sam takes two steps into the hotel room before the smell hits him. An instant later, he's pressed back against the wall, a firm body pinning his and a hard grip locking his wrists above his head. He feels a moment of disorientation, but as soon as he realizes the grip on his wrists is metal, Sam knows exactly who this is.
"Hey, Barnes," he manages to say. He's a little proud of himself for not just whimpering. The alpha's unsupressed scent is thick in the room and his instincts are going haywire, telling him to roll over and show his belly. That might be the smartest idea, but Sam wants to try talking like normal people first.
Barnes sticks his nose into Sam's neck and inhales deeply.
So they're skipping the talking.
Sam and Steve have been chasing Barnes through Europe. Barnes catches them first, and he has a few questions for Sam.

Now they’re getting lunch or coffee every few days. Sam falls asleep on Bucky’s couch three more times. Bucky joins him and Steve a couple of times on their morning run.
He doesn’t notice, is the thing; doesn’t notice how ever since Sam slept on his couch that night he’s been letting Bucky closer bit by bit, that as Bucky’s been wondering about the boundaries and structures of friendship, Sam’s been drawing in.
