Nathaniel’s gaze snapped to Riko’s body, drawn to it as though magnetised. It stood out like a bloodied gash on smooth skin, a red blot on a white canvas.
“Nathaniel,” Andrew commanded, “don’t look at it.”
His hand fell across Nathaniel’s eyes, narrowing his world down to darkness and skin and heat. “Let me handle this. Go change.”
Nathaniel parted his lips – to protest, to send Andrew away again? – and the sobs that tumbled out were so foreign he didn’t immediately recognize them as his own.
“It’s okay,” Andrew said; aside from the low pitch of his voice, every word was a perfect monotone. He spoke with earth-shattering certainty, as though it were pure fact. Everything was okay. “I’ll make him go away, Nathaniel. I should’ve done it a long time ago.”
