Summary
Under the guidance of his doctor and mostly out of desperation due to his last annual heat being severe enough to nearly land him in the hospital, Shane Hollander knows he needs to take a heat partner for the first time if he doesn’t want to end up in a cycle facility.
With his options between hiring a comfort alpha or asking one Ilya Rozanov for help, the choice is clear to Shane. Even if it feels like he’s losing every shred of his dignity to ask his - rival? fuckbuddy? - whatever Rozanov is to help him through his heat, Rozanov is the only alpha he trusts enough to take care of him.
Rozanov is due for his own rut and is more than happy to finally, finally have heat sex with Hollander. Which is why he says yes with no hesitation. No other reason, of course.

He didn't know that if an Omega spent their first true, unmedicated heat in the presence of an Alpha who protected them, the brain didn't care about "hooking up" or "sexual gratification." Shane Hollander has the highest hockey IQ in the NHL...and actively pretends he doesn't. He's already set himself apart in many ways, and he doesn't need "absolute hockey nerd" added to the list.
Keeping this secret gets harder as he stops hiding other parts of himself from those around him. He comes out to the Voyageurs (who don't take it very well), he starts hanging out with the Raiders (though no one has a clue about him and Ilya being anything beyond friends), and he feels as if he is losing parts of himself in the expectations others hold for him.
Ilya notices, and resolves to create a space that his boyfriend can thrive in, even if that means getting him the fuck out of Montreal.
Set during The Long Game, where Shane and Ilya have made their plan, Shane's parents know about their relationship, and they've started telling people they are friends, but before Ilya officially transfers to Ottawa. That's right folks, this is a "Boston steals Shane Hollander" fic. We need more, and I am here to contribute☺️🫰

For a long moment, Shane couldn’t hear or process anything. The world had narrowed then expanded too fast, like he was falling. At some point Hayden started talking again, but he couldn’t understand him. There was only the darkness overhead and the ringing in his ears.

The words filtered through slow and muddy, echoing. Shane’s mouth was dry, his tongue thick, but he managed, “Yeah. I’m here.”
“Okay. You’re not gonna have a panic attack, right? Cause that would be bad probably, for your head I mean, and I just think—”
Shane stopped listening again.
Rozanov was coming to Montreal. He’d be in the same locker room, skating on the same ice, living in the same fucking city.Three years after Shane broke it off (not that there was anything to break off), he gets a concussion and the Metros bring in Ilya to fill in for him. "There's — well, we don't know how many of us there are, but there's at least seventeen of us that know each other. Plus you two. We watch out for each other."
His eyes enormous, Hollander asked, "There's, what? A secret underground gay hockey network?"
Scott shrugged. "Yeah, basically."

Ilya and Shane find their way into The Tennis Club, a network of closeted hockey players that hook up - so long as everyone keeps it casual. Which is no problem! They can do casual, right?
