“I’m gone at this point, aren’t I?” The Doctor snapped her head to look at the professor. She had a wry smile, bitter and resigned. She knew. It was too much to admit it out loud. Only one thing to say, then.
“...Spoilers.”
“Have you finished mourning me, then?”
“I didn’t say you were-”
“Didn’t have to,” she interrupted sharply.
God, if only she knew. The grief never leaves. It becomes a part of you until you overflow with it. It seeps into your bones, into your essence, your energy. Everyone the Doctor has ever lost has felt like an ache in her ribs, a blunt pain exacerbated when she remembers and takes stock. River’s death more than others felt sharp. The moment the Doctor realized he had his last moments with her before he even knew how important she would be to him was full of barbed edges and spikes. It was raw. It remained raw.
