“If you’re here for something honest and respectable, I’ll eat my guns piecemeal,” said Jesper. He scrubbed his face. “How long have you been telling those poor girls about your sick mother in Oldendaal?”
“It was Zierfoort, actually.”
“I don’t care where it was! What are you doing?”
“I thought I wasn’t supposed to involve you in my schemes anymore.” said Kaz petulantly, glancing in the mirror to rearrange his jacket.
“Kaz, you playing the victim is about as natural as a flock of lime-green flamingos, so don’t bother,” said Jesper. “Is it a heist? A blackmail job? Gathering information?”
“Who said it was just one thing?” said Kaz, straightening his cuffs with two brisk jerks. “This place is the playground for the children of the rich and prosperous, Jes. I could have a million reasons for being here. But since you’re here for reasons both honest and respectable, I can assure you I’ll stay out of your way–”

In his chest, the thing snarls. It's been quiet and weak, wobbly-winged with a truly pathetic appetite since his encounter with the Darkling. It stirred when he saw Pekka Rollins in Hellgate. But now, it arches up, eager for this man’s blood. Kaz thoughtlessly obliges, pulling it forward until his hands are nestled in the man’s eye, relishing the squelching of the man’s flesh. His hands are coated with shadow and blood. He hears Wylan retch behind him.
There's a moment of recognition in Oomen’s eyes as he realizes the power that Kaz wields, power beyond that of a soulless Bastard of the Barrel, and Kaz takes vicious pleasure at pulling at that moment of recognition until he holds it in his palm; the man’s eyeball is pink and bloody and disgusting. He throws it into the waves.
He pushes the handkerchief into the man’s eye socket. He pushes shadow into the man’s throat.

Every muscle in Inej’s body froze. Suddenly, the ceaseless noise of the crowd fell into silence around her. It was all she could do to keep her feet planted on the wet floorboards of the harbor. Her eyes flitted listlessly around the face of the man before her—his nose was softer, but still just as straight as the one that Inej saw every day in Ketterdam. His hair was a shade or two lighter, but it fell in the same pin-straight sheet that Inej knew. His eyes were more hooded, brighter with hope, but Inej knew damn well who else those eyes belonged to. The faintest of firepox scars traced his jawline, disappearing beneath his collar.
”Jordie,” she breathed.

Inej takes a step forwards. Almost imperceptibly, Kaz winces. “Then what are you going to do?”
Finally, Kaz meet’s Inej’s gaze, and she knows the look in his eye: he is drawing himself up, strapping on his armor. He is steeling himself for pain.
“I’m going to go to Lij,” he says. “And you’re all coming with me.”

Or, when a job comes up in Lij, Kaz has to return home. He brings the only people he can trust on the journey with him.
