Absurd. The entire situation was nothing short of absurd. From the very beginning the hunt for the Horcruxes had been doomed to end like this. He had known nothing about the bloody Taboo. Ron had abandoned them—and though he had returned, the damage from his absence had already been done. Hermione had accidentally destroyed the only advantage Harry had possessed against Voldemort, and people had already died or been hurt because of this ridiculous lack of information.
Why in Merlin’s name had Dumbledore not taught him more? A handful of memories and nothing else. No real training, no proper suspicions to follow, no tangible advantage—only a series of bloody riddles and that cursed Snitch he still carried on him.
And yet none of this truly crossed his mind as he watched the green light rushing towards him in Malfoy Manor. The only thought that remained, clear and painfully simple, was that he wished he had acted sooner. He wished he had taken matters into his own hands. He wished he had been given more time.
He wished he had been allowed to live just a little longer……..And then he saw the ceiling of Privet Drive.
