During the worst of winter, a traveler comes to stay at Lan Wangji's inn. He wears a red ribbon in his hair.
“Do you see the rabbit?” Wei Ying asks and points at the moon. “That’s the moon rabbit, he helps make Chang’e more immortality elixir. He keeps Chang’e company.”
“I do not wish the rabbit for company,” Lan Wangji says tightly. “You are the one I want by my side.”
“And I’m here, Lan Zhan. If you go to the moon, I’ll follow you, I’ll always be here now.”

He may be recognized, somewhere. The ravens and the hawks hear the name and cry it to the skies; the mouse and the fox both carry it with them through snow-washed fields. Below ground the beetles gnaw it into roots and bark. Wei Ying. Wei Wuxian.
OR: Tasked with finding the Yunmeng Jiang's missing wu, a young man called Wei Wuxian, Lan Wangji recruits a familiar and travels across the land in search of him. His familiar, a black hare with a little too much personality, seems to have his own secrets.

On the wooden bridge curving over the frozen river sat a man—a fox.
His tail swayed quietly over the railing, his feet propped up on the support beam in the middle and his fingers elegantly running along the length of a black flute that was held to his puckered lips. His eyes were closed, but his dark ears atop his head flickered toward him as Lan Wangji came to a stop only meters away to stare.
And stare and stare and stare, through his sleep-muddled mind.
Lan Wangji had to still be dreaming.
There was no other reason for Wei Wuxian to be here, in the middle of winter.
In the middle of winter, Lan Wangji wakes from his restless slumber to the sound of a flute.
