Molecular physiologist She'dan Huzzun has been asked to serve as the new science officer for the gamma crew on the USS Enterprise. Despite this incredible opportunity, She'dan exists as an outcast. Being immunocompromised, She'dan can't be around other people without protective gear; any close contact carries the threat of infection. She is safe with not one. Well, almost no one.
When a new science officer joins the Enterprise's gamma crew and starts sharing his lab space, Lt. Commander Data expects her to simply be another human he needs to learn to navigate. But Dr. Huzzun is not put off by him at all. Being an android, he is the only person she can interact with without fear of infection. Neither sees the other's differences as a fault, and they take the opportunity to explore each other's perspectives. And neither expects the connection they form.
At the same time, something sinister lurks in Federation space. People are disappearing. Files are being stolen or corrupted. Resources for colonies are running out despite regular deliveries.
