    Cody was lucky, really, that Obi-Wan had lost consciousness during the crash, because otherwise he would never have gotten away with the tender pressure building in his wrist - much less the lance of pain that sliced across his arm every time he adjusted his General’s weight over his shoulder.

    His shields were good: they’d had to be good, to allow him to sit across from his commanding officer every night - heads bent together over a holo or a stack of mission reports - and not be doing the Force equivalent of broadcasting his heart rate over the Negotiator's public comms. But even if Obi-Wan hadn’t sensed the hot needles pricking into Cody’s palms, he would have seen the skin of his lower arm stretching smooth around the swelling. He would have realized what it meant.

    Cody takes a steadying breath. The general cares so much for this planet, but they can regain a planet. They can’t regain lost lives. “Sir. We need to begin an evac.”

    Uncertainty flashes behind Obi-Wan's eyes, then understanding; not for the first time, Cody is grateful for all of the long hours spent just the two of them, making it easier to read each other’s expressions. “They’re stronger than we thought,” Obi-Wan guesses, certainty colouring his tone as Cody nods. “Give the order. I’ll head into the front, provide what cover I can.”

    “Sir—”

    “Cody. Get your brothers out of the front.” He smacks his newly tied vambraces together to adjust them to his comfort, then pulls Cody close, pressing their foreheads together in a Keldabe.
